By next month we should be able to make some plans. The house is finally far enough along.

Yes m'am! A smoked ham hock that's been braised in greens is the bomb!

Just tell me when, and I'm there with doggie treats for the babies.!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Girl, you CAIN'T make authentic greens without that hock! Smoked turkey be damned!

THAT^ is NOT true! Vegetables are very eatable (at least for myself) when I ask olive oil, butter, and/or sea salt to them mofos. [Edited 2/4/11 9:28am]

It's also amazing how someone can increase their chances of a heartattack from eating all of THAT^ pork.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, I don't eat footballs, so that should better my chances somewhat.

What, exactly, are you basing that statement on? Eating pork (in and of itself) does not increase your chances of a heart attack.
Proof, please. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Instead of pork bacon, have you ever tried turkey bacon?
Instead of pork chops, how about lamb chops?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Two very different flavors, indeed. Some folk can't tolerate the smell/taste of lamb. I love both!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I could sit and eat a lamb chop a pork chop some turkey bacon and some regular bacon in one serving.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I love turkey, but I hate it when it pretends to be something it's not. When I want bacon, I want bacon. No substitutes. And lamb is one thing I just can't acquire a taste for. I know "gamey" is probably not the right word to describe how it tastes to me, but whatever it is, I just can't get used to it. Other than that, I'm pretty varied in what I eat, and I don't eat all that much pork. But I do love it when I have it, and I agree with Genesia's statement about it. I also don't have any religious or other beliefs that would prevent me from wanting to eat pork.

1. Since it's already document in the Hebrew Scriptures (The Old Testament) that the pig/swine is an unclean animal, it's no need for me to go there at the expense of this thread getting sent to P&R.
2. Have you ever heard of the disease called Trichinosis?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinosis
Trichinosis, also called trichinellosis, or trichiniasis, is a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork or wild game infected with the larvae of a species of roundworm Trichinella spiralis, commonly called the trichina worm.
THAT^ disease, which is found in pigs/swines, is also responsible for shortening the lifespan of people that consumes pork, bacon, ham, etc.
And there's more: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Pig_%28domestic%29
The domestic pig or swine is a mammal native to Eurasia, now an important food animal in nearly every part of the world. Pigs were first domesticated in prehistoric times. They were brought to the Americas by European settlers, and to Oceania by the Polynesians. In North America DeSoto's men drove herds of them as they traversed the southeastern USA. Some escaped and became feral, where they quickly became a favored game animal for Native Americans.
Nearly every part of pigs is eaten: the flesh produces pork and bacon, ribs become spareribs, and even the feet are eaten. Pork is especially important to Chinese and Polynesian cuisine. On the other hand, Judaism and Islam ban the eating of pigs or any other use of them, probably because of ancient encounters with trichinosis.
In addition to trichinosis, pigs are a major transmitter of influenza viruses to humans.

I love deer meat! But I don't mess with rabbit.

You said eating pork causes heart disease. Nothing you posted has anything whatever to do with heart disease.
Trichinosis is caused by a parasite, which is only a problem if you eat undercooked pork from an infected animal. It is not a cause of traditional heart disease - and it is certainly not something that affects everyone who eats pork. Especially if they prepare it properly.
We aren't discussing your belief system about the relative cleanliness/uncleanliness of pork. (Or shellfish or goat or venison, for that matter.) You want to follow Hebrew dietary law, fine - be my guest. But please do not try to pass that off as proof that eating pork is unhealthy. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Fair enough. But I still think THAT'S^ funny as hell!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I get tickled when folk talk about the cleaniness or lack thereof of certain animals. Hell, they all shit and piss and walk around in dirt and don't wash their hands or genitals after procreating.
I have a friend who was raised Muslim. She refuses to eat pork, but will pack her nose with cocaine any time she gets a chance. Oh, the irony!

I've never had rabbit.

Unless you're serving me pig with a side of mashed turd, I'm good.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I've had venison twice, and both times it must have been cooked incorrectly because it was tough and "gamey." I've never eaten Thumper!

And you truly believe that the entire 100% of Trichirnosis is killed off after cooking any part of the pig "properly"?!?
Well, to each its own. But there is no way that I could trust pigs/swines as food after learning about Trichirnosis many years ago. Not the mention that pigs/swines are the kind of animals that can eat human waste with a and a smile.

OFF-TOPIC: They need to legalize cocaine so we can have it back in again TBH!

I look something akin to this when I'm eating a bacon sandwich for breakfast:

You and me both! | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You do realize that putting what you write in bold doesn't make it valid...right? Spelling things correctly does, however. It's trichinosis.
And, yes - cooking does kill it. I'll trust food scientists over the Bible anyday, when it comes to that sort of thing.
Dogs would also eat human waste. There are humans who dig it, too. What's your point? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
