I mostly do the trade collections now for superhero comics. I just can't justify supporting the monthly mags when there's so little to them.

I've digitized all my music but I still haven't gotten rid of all the physical CDs. I just piled them all into a big box in my closet. I don't think I could ever get rid of my Prince stuff, but all the rest of it...I should really make that leap.

The topic does raise some interesting questions, maybe one of which is: What exactly do we get out of the media we consume -- are we gratified by the experience of it? The materiality of it? A bit of both? I'd say for me it's a bit of both yet, but it becomes more experiential and less material as I get older. I don't think it's altogether healthy, but I'm really starting to hate "stuff."
The implications kinda scare me (because I think the presence of decay -- either of material or our recollection -- in part makes the passage of life more poignant), but part of me would completely love it if all sensory stimuli could one day simply be downloaded into my brain. If I wanted to watch Gone With the Wind, for example, all I'd have to do is close my eyes and recall it. If I couldn't remember the favorite verse from some lullaby I heard as a kid, all I'd have to do is sit quietly for a bit and play it back in my head. It'd be quick and total recall -- and imagine the media storage space I'd save in my home! [Edited 1/28/11 8:04am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

a valid point, and they won't be without blame when the monthlys go away also.

Thanks for your interesting response. I think one we we WILL have that kind of access to all kinds of media, info, being able to recall any kind of movie, etc.etc. Whether this will be via some sort of futuristic, microchip-in-your-brain mini computer chip or a portable mini-mini gadget remains to be seen but I think that is definitely the trend, and it sounds like a good thing but also a double-edged sword to me. Maybe I expect too much from comics these days, but I still remember being a kid and getting a brand new Teen Titans or X-Men or whatever for 50 cents and spending a long time reading them and rereading them. Now I can pick up just about any mainstream comic for $3 or $4 and be done with it in about two minutes. I'm just getting fewer and fewer utils out of most monthly comics, most of which just seem to be vehicles for semi-decent artists to full-page or spread artwork that they can later sell. And since a lot of the art in comics can kind of suck, it doesn't do much for me.
I have tons more stupid thoughts on this but I don't want to jack the thread. We should start a comics thread.

do like me, work on collecting full runs from the 70's and 80's. I'm working on my Animal Man, Swamp Thing and the original Luke Cage. I plan on Moon Knight and The 'Nam next.

Yeah, that's fun. I've already got Swamp Thing. I'm working on completing my Legion of Super-Heroes stuff.

I have a huge armoire my son built for me I keep them in... So they are not cluttering up anything and they are out of site...
Its about the only thing I do collect since I dont collect chochkies... Is that spelled right??
I very rarely listen to the radio anymore... Its either I pop in a cd, or I listen to Pandora radio... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

Is there much of a difference between coffee table art books (which I think we all agree are worth keeping) and gatefold vinyl records? [Edited 1/28/11 12:29pm]

I haven't been to Rebel Rebel in years! I've never ever seen it that cluttered though. This pic must have been taken on inventory day. Unless it has gotten really bad recently.

They are very similar. I've endured the sacrifice of CD and vinyl packaging for the sake of simplifying my personal space. But dispensing with other large-scale visual art is a line I'm not yet ready to cross. I suppose I could look at images on a gigantic widescreen TV, but that truly can't measure up to a big, glossy print spread or a canvas. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

In my old age and complete lack of sophistication, I'm oblivious to which New York wrecka stows I've visited. I think I was there last maybe two years ago and, no, it wouldn't at all have been this bad. [Edited 1/28/11 13:24pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I don't want to get rid of my comics, but something has to be done. I've reached the saturation point in my small two bedroom apartment. I have to do one of the following:
a. start selling some of them
b. put them in storage
c. move into a bigger place
On a somewhat related note, I found out this week that Wizard magazine folded and will from now on only be an online enitity.

I don't have many records, but I've managed to hold on to most of my cassette and CD collection.
I just can't start all over again with some of my cassettes. I have boxes full ranging from Motley Crue to Paula Abdul to New Edition to Beastie Boys.
Same with my CDs never got rid of them. I still buy CDs too. Todd makes fun of me for it, but I don't care. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

yes, me too, it saves a huge amount of space. Though rifling through those bulky notebooks can be a pain. I always end up with a hug stack of cds on the shelf next to the player, and have to sort them out every month or two.
I have a hard time getting rid of things. I have no space in my apartment and the other day I was going through cassette tapes, thinking "I'll keep that. Haven't listened to it in twenty years but you never know!"
So I put a huge box of tapes on the top shelf of my closet, just to take up some space. My Legacy

our cars are full of poorly labelled burned CDs, since I never listen to them, might as well just chuck em in the bin

back in my youth I'd buy at least 1-2 CDs every Friday
I haven't bought a pysical CD now in 4-5 years. If I was asked which album I was to buy next I wouldn't even be able to think of a title
and yes that's AGE and being a parent and having other things more important to spend my money on. Plus, it just doesn't seem important any more! My ex-boyfriend thinks it's a tragedy that music isn't my LIFE anymore (he is still single and carefree with disposable income, so no wonder).
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yeah it's just not as important, and I am even a musician. I guess I have that outlet.
I do still buy cd's but I don't have the same religious attitude toward listening to it that I used to. Maybe it is like sex, I'd rather do it than to be an observer My Legacy

Talke about albums! I still have CASSETTES! At least 30; most of them Prince. I even have 45's. I have a few old 78's from my daddy's collection, and albums? Geez, probable hundreds.
