Lol.............I have both. I just have a hard time getting rid of the original stuff.

I have to admit, I do miss the accessibility to production credits and packaging art. Those things haven't yet been optimized in digital at all. confused

Those things proably won't be addressed any time soon either.

I mostly do the trade collections now for superhero comics. I just can't justify supporting the monthly mags when there's so little to them.

I own not a single material piece of music anymore. Two years ago, I finished digitizing a collection I'd amassed since junior high, and I LOVE being rid of all that clutter.

I've digitized all my music but I still haven't gotten rid of all the physical CDs. I just piled them all into a big box in my closet. I don't think I could ever get rid of my Prince stuff, but all the rest of it...I should really make that leap.

I thought about my own cd collection..i have a cd player at home, one in my car, one at work, and I don't listen to them anymore. I listen to sports talk radio on the way to work, and the news on the way home..or I listen to the top 40 station which does phone tap calls, just to start the morning off with a laugh. I have my favorites on my ipod...I can get any song I want...so now Im questioning the wisdom of holding onto cd's that I don't listen to anymore.

Certainly I wouldn't give up my beatles/stones/prince/ and a couple of other groups..

The albums...well same thing. Do I really need to hold onto my Pablo Cruise collection?

I find your post very interesting. It raises a couple of questions in my mind ...

1-Your post reads as if you listen to a lot LESS music than before. Is that right? And if so, what are your reasons for this? Age? Different lifestyle? Lack of new and strong material from your favorite artists?

2-Isn´t there any kind of emotional attachment to your old music, whether it´s on CD or vinyl?

3-A lot of people seem to be unhappy with the quality of mp3 sound and miss the good old days of the warm analogue sound or even uncompressed CD quality, yet at the same time many more people seem to have no problem with getting rid of all their old sources for that kind of sound and even risk losing a lot of their music since mp3s often get lost, hds crash, data is lost for good etc.etc. What is your stance on these issues?

I still own a lot of vinyl and I still buy CDs once in a blue moon (because I like a physical CD with additional info and artwork though they put less and less effort into that) but I can totally relate to most of what you wrote....I listen to less music these days and sometimes have to force myself to put on some old CDs or connect my laptop to my stereo´s loudspeakers for more volume and often find myself asking "What went wrong? Somewhere along the line, I lost interest. WTF?"

And then I ponder on the various reasons or have my phases where I intentionally listen to more music whereas in the past, it was an automatic thing like breathing to play good music all the time.

The clutter thing and wanting to get rid of it is another interesting topic but I don´t want to stray from the main topic of this thread.

The topic does raise some interesting questions, maybe one of which is: What exactly do we get out of the media we consume -- are we gratified by the experience of it? The materiality of it? A bit of both? I'd say for me it's a bit of both yet, but it becomes more experiential and less material as I get older. I don't think it's altogether healthy, but I'm really starting to hate "stuff."

The implications kinda scare me (because I think the presence of decay -- either of material or our recollection -- in part makes the passage of life more poignant), but part of me would completely love it if all sensory stimuli could one day simply be downloaded into my brain. If I wanted to watch Gone With the Wind, for example, all I'd have to do is close my eyes and recall it. If I couldn't remember the favorite verse from some lullaby I heard as a kid, all I'd have to do is sit quietly for a bit and play it back in my head. It'd be quick and total recall -- and imagine the media storage space I'd save in my home! lol

Thanks for your interesting response. I think one we we WILL have that kind of access to all kinds of media, info, being able to recall any kind of movie, etc.etc.

Whether this will be via some sort of futuristic, microchip-in-your-brain mini computer chip or a portable mini-mini gadget remains to be seen but I think that is definitely the trend, and it sounds like a good thing but also a double-edged sword to me.

Maybe I expect too much from comics these days, but I still remember being a kid and getting a brand new Teen Titans or X-Men or whatever for 50 cents and spending a long time reading them and rereading them. Now I can pick up just about any mainstream comic for $3 or $4 and be done with it in about two minutes. I'm just getting fewer and fewer utils out of most monthly comics, most of which just seem to be vehicles for semi-decent artists to full-page or spread artwork that they can later sell. And since a lot of the art in comics can kind of suck, it doesn't do much for me.

I have tons more stupid thoughts on this but I don't want to jack the thread. We should start a comics thread.

hmmm I don't agree, but there's something really cool about this statement. Mind if I put it on a T shirt? lol

Is there much of a difference between coffee table art books (which I think we all agree are worth keeping) and gatefold vinyl records?

They are very similar. I've endured the sacrifice of CD and vinyl packaging for the sake of simplifying my personal space. But dispensing with other large-scale visual art is a line I'm not yet ready to cross. I suppose I could look at images on a gigantic widescreen TV, but that truly can't measure up to a big, glossy print spread or a canvas.

I don't want to get rid of my comics, but something has to be done. I've reached the saturation point in my small two bedroom apartment. I have to do one of the following:

a. start selling some of them

b. put them in storage

c. move into a bigger place

On a somewhat related note, I found out this week that Wizard magazine folded and will from now on only be an online enitity. sad

I don't have many records, but I've managed to hold on to most of my cassette and CD collection.

I just can't start all over again with some of my cassettes. I have boxes full ranging from Motley Crue to Paula Abdul to New Edition to Beastie Boys. lol

Same with my CDs never got rid of them. I still buy CDs too. Todd makes fun of me for it, but I don't care.

yes, me too, it saves a huge amount of space. Though rifling through those bulky notebooks can be a pain. I always end up with a hug stack of cds on the shelf next to the player, and have to sort them out every month or two.

I have a hard time getting rid of things. I have no space in my apartment and the other day I was going through cassette tapes, thinking "I'll keep that. Haven't listened to it in twenty years but you never know!"

So I put a huge box of tapes on the top shelf of my closet, just to take up some space. neutral

I find your post very interesting. It raises a couple of questions in my mind ...

1-Your post reads as if you listen to a lot LESS music than before. Is that right? And if so, what are your reasons for this? Age? Different lifestyle? Lack of new and strong material from your favorite artists? yes, yes, yes. back in the 70's when I was in high school, I'd spent most of my free time in Sam Goody scouting new records, old records. I knew the names of producers, production facilities..as I got older, I stopped taking chances on artists for whom I had only heard 1 track, and stayed safe by buying new releases and back catologues of my favorite artists..I also bought associated artists..so Prince led me to the Time which led me to The Family to Sheila E, etc..etc. If Prince wrote a song for someone else, I bought that album cd. These days, I just don't have to time to sit down and learn a new cd..get the know each track, as I did 40 years ago (I'm 52). I'll still buy new music by Prince..but passed on the last rolling stones cd...Paul McCartney...there just aren't enough engaging tracks

2-Isn´t there any kind of emotional attachment to your old music, whether it´s on CD or vinyl? There is some emotional attachment to my old music..but for most of the albums, I now have them on cd..except for groups like Pablo Cruise..or Lynard Skynard..or Earth Wind and Fire..some old albums mean alot to me, and those I'll probably keep. I remember when I bought 33 1/3 by george harrison. I borrowed my dad's car to go to the wrecka stow, and the timing chain snapped..so I was stranded and miss school...

Again, back in the day..we researched out tuners, amps, speakers, turntables..I have a custom stereo system that I can't part with, partly because I still have vinyl. As far as the quality of sound, it's just not as important to me now, as it was in the past.

The clutter thing and wanting to get rid of it is another interesting topic but I don´t want to stray from the main topic of this thread.

thanks for your thoughtful response...see above. I will also add this thought...it was a sad day when Vinyl stopped being popular..I'd look forward to the album cover, liner notes, etc.

back in my youth I'd buy at least 1-2 CDs every Friday

I haven't bought a pysical CD now in 4-5 years. If I was asked which album I was to buy next I wouldn't even be able to think of a title

and yes that's AGE and being a parent and having other things more important to spend my money on. Plus, it just doesn't seem important any more! My ex-boyfriend thinks it's a tragedy that music isn't my LIFE anymore (he is still single and carefree with disposable income, so no wonder).

yeah it's just not as important, and I am even a musician. I guess I have that outlet.

I do still buy cd's but I don't have the same religious attitude toward listening to it that I used to. Maybe it is like sex, I'd rather do it than to be an observer
