Does anyone have any opinions on the Amazon Kindle? Like or dislike?

A friend of mine has one. She loves the thing.

I have the kindle 3..it's about 2 months old. I like the fact that it's lightweight, and I'll save a ton of space once I go through my book collection..I wish the Kindle allowed one to borrow books from public libraries. Right now, it can't. My youngest has a nook..which I find to be more complicated to use (I do..she doesn't she's doing fine)

I use my Kindle 3 every day. Love it.

Ron had it, loved it until he realized he needed a backlit screen (most people seem ok with the kindle screen, just his preference).

Then he switched to Sharper Image's Literati, which he loved...until it went into some sort of coma where it gets stuck updating and apparently noone can help you with it. Surprising for Sharper Image, i thought they were a big respectable name.

He's now on Nook Color and he couldn't be more thrilled with it.

I checked his out, I might end up getting one too.

What exactly do you mean by this?

Are you going to somehow transfer your books to Kindle, or do you just mean eventually as you buy books for kindle it will save you lots of space?

I have 2 floor to ceiling book cases and a credenza full of books. I also have 3 boxes full of books.

There are books all over my dresser and my headboard.

Clearly something must be done...

So far I think I may go with the Nook color since it's the only color e-reader out so far. The Kindle is good if you want the most book-like reading experience but the Nook does have adjustable back lighting.

I'm going to check them all out though.

I have the same "problem", only I also pay for a storage space to hold excess books, comics and vinyl. I'll never, EVER get rid of 75% of my books, but every couple years I do go through them (even the ones I previously thought I'd keep forever) and do some thinning. I donate whatever I decide to get rid of to a second hand store in the area whose sales benefit a couple of shelters and an orphanage. I know I'm losing large amounts of dollars on a lot of them (some I buy second hand for very cheap), but once I've read them it makes me happy to know that somebody else will get some enjoyment from them, too.

Also, I'll never stop buying books. NEVER!

However, my brother-in-law got a regular Nook at Christmas and I must admit it's kind of cool. Even with the base 2GB memory he was able to put a TON of books on it along with some reading music and audio books. I used to think they were too expensive (they still need more base memory for what they cost), but after messing around with his I think I may pick one up myself.

And that Nook is still all I know about these things. Haven't "tested" a Kindle yet.

I have 3 or 4 hard cover copies of "the count of monte cristo" and the muskateer series of books, as well as 40 others of Alexandre Dumas that I picked up in places like the strand bookshop in manhattan...why? because I love dumas, and I thought they'd be worth something, someday..unfortunately, they're falling apart. Right now, most of dumas's works are available for free for my kindle..

I have 2 copies each of Dorothy Dunnet's book..one is hardcover, mostly 1st editions that I thought would be worth something, and a set of paperbacks which I could read over and over....I've started buying those for the kindle, to read whenever..

I have at least 10 books on the rolling stones, 15 on the beatles, 5 or 6 on Prince...all of which I've read, and saved to pass on someday..but..seriously...by the time I'm ready to pass them on...It would be like my parents saying, Son we've saved these books about Jerry Lee Lewis, they're yours now...he doesn't mean anything to me, so why would I read it.

So I can rebuy my faves onto the kindle (which can hold approximately 3000 books),

and get rid of the hardcovers/paperback.. over time, the paper starts to yellow and disintegrate anyway..

I know that I will never stop buying them either, I'm a hopeless bookworm, but I seriously need to do what I have done with movies, which is buy only the important ones. I go through my books every year to see what needs to be donated and what I want to keep...it gets harder every time.

I got a Barnes and Noble gift card for Christmas, so I will most likely put that toward a Nook. Like you said, those things ain't cheap.

My cds, vinyl and casettes is a whole nother problem!

It's great that there are tons of ebooks available for free...audio books too.

There will always be some that you can only get in book form though...those will be the ones I buy a physical copy of. There's a Dickens book that I'm hunting for right now.

Yes, Kindle is awesome if you love classics, eh? I am not in a classics mode right now, but that sould save a fortune if I got into them again.

And the space of course (much of my unavailable-but-needed space is taken by books). I heard a commercial for a radio program where the guest had calculated the "cost" of gifts that are given to us in terms of square footage and the rent/mortgage that we pay. So a large book might use 1/10,000 of your apartment space per month, or $.10 of a $1000 rent, $1.20 per year, etc.

That is one ungrateful bastard for whom I would buy extra useless and large gifts!!

Yeah, like useless out of date antique encyclopedia sets.

I have a Kindle 3 and a Kindle DX.

Quite simply the best e-readers you can buy. IF you want an e-reader.

What I wanted was a device to read books that would not strain my eyes. Nook, ipad, and other e-readers work fine, but none of them have reproduced the Kindle's e-ink screen.

If you're loooking to read books on a handheld device, the Kindle is the way to go.

The kindle is currently the best, with the sharpest resolution of all of them.

Backlight smartphone readers aren't good enough, and the iPad isn't

a good solution for ereaders.

But.....If you can wait 6 months to a year, Mirasol ereaders might

hit the market and transform it. Mirasols will have the same features

as current epaper readers, but with color. The battery life will be amazing,

and you'll be able to read them in daylight just like the kindle.
