Question for experienced travelers....

Do you have to trade in your Old passports before you can apply for a new one? I need to know because mine expires in a couple of months...but I want to take a trip....and I know it sometimes takes a long time processing new apps.

Yes, they took mine when they processed my renewel, but I eventually got it back.

You may want to check the country you are visiting and soon, though, as many countries require that your passport not expire within the next 6 months in order for you to enter. If you're only a few months away you may need to expedite a renewel to have your new one before traveling.

Yes, you have to submit your current passport with the renewal form. They mutilate it so it can't be used again, then return it to you.

Yep. You would have to surrender the expired or soon to be expired one. It's not your property. It is the property of your government and has to be surrendered to them should they demand it.

Don't wait till the few months. Apply for a renewal now. Depending on the processing time or back log, it might take a bit longer for you to get.

They've never taken ours away for good, just cut corners off the covers and holes through it.

One thing I learned the hard way: NEVER travel without a valid passport and carry it with you all times.

Legally not good enough, but better than nothing, so yes, always handy to have that too.

Good idea to make a copy of the entired passport should it get lost or stolen. Makes it a bit easier for an embassy/consulate to have a temp one for you so you're not stranded trying to get home.
