I think what can't be in doubt is that per square kilometre Thailand is the most fun country in the world. There are no actual statistics to back this up but it's a fact nonetheless.

Bit harsh. You said Japan, Korea and Vietnam aren't in Asia! That's not being taught differently, that's just plain wrong. I know plenty of Americans do know a fair bit about geography outside of North America, but damn.

As for the middle east, near east, western Asia, it is a little murky as far as the definitions, but India is very much in Asia and Indians are Asians.

THE MAINLAND not the surrounding islands.... India being closer in proximity. Yet it is not considered Asian by many.

The issue is NOT where countries are... the question was WHY don't Americans consider the middle eatsern people Asian.

Get this also.... America is fucking racist. So if black history is properly taught, then why would schools drill students on proper terminology of meaningless 3rd world countries? Slanty eyes = Asian or Oriental. Racism plays a huge part in American beliefs of who is what.

Heck Americans focus more on knowing brands of beer than they do on geography.

So what I know or don't know isn't really the issue... I was trying to explain why people have a certain mindset about people from the hugest portion of the world.

Also, what people were taught 20+ years ago in schools is very different from what is being taught today... this also factors in to what Americans condsider "Asian".
