Although today has been ok, the amount of rain there has been since New Year has just been ridiculous. I'm on the Gold Coast and by some miracle has been relatively unaffected although the entire surrounding areas are in flood. Unbelievable whats happening in Brisbane.

I just saw some footage on CNN...just insane! i dont mean to sound ignorant,,,,but WHERE is all this water coming from?
is it from rain or busted dams/levee's?

It's been raining heavily and flooding for weeks leading up to this situation. Rainwater that normally gets absorbed by the earth no longer is because the ground is saturated and the dams are full to overflowing.
If I understand correctly what they've been reporting, a lot of the water currently flowing into the Brisbane River is from a major dam with a controlled release, but they have to do it otherwise they risk the whole infrastructure of the dam which would be much worse.
The last flood in Qld like this (back in 1974) was from a cyclone (hurricane), but this one has been a slow build-up leading to a sudden catastrophe
My thoughts and prayers are with all affected by the floods in Qld, as well as Brazil and so many other places around the world either in the midst of or still trying to recover from devastating floods.
I don't know how many Qld orgers we have, but the Peach and Black guys come to mind

Thanks for the thoughts. I live in Brisbane. It has been a crazy week. My place was OK, but many around me were not. The floods in Brisbane were not flash floods like in the cities further north, the waters just rose and rose over period of 2 days. Parts of the city are like a war zone. But community spirit is high. Some 12,000 volunteers (myself included) turned up on Sarturday to help clean the city (this is not counting people who were already affected or helping friends/family - these are people who just helped for the sake of helping). Tough work. Everyone is walking around covered in mud. But yeah, it will take some time. Probably months if not years for the city to be back to normal. Thanks for checking in toejam - glad to know you're ok, if a little (lot) flood-weary.
I heard today about someone who was ok, whose house was ok, but who currently had 30 people living in his home because various members of family and extended family had lost their homes.
Whether it has been about dealing with having no power/supplies/etc..., cleaning up homes and/or businesses (or friends' homes and/or businesses), providing refuge or helping with the overall clean-up, clearly everyone up there has been deeply and immediately affected and the fact that community spirit remains so high is a testament to the strength and resilience of the people.
Take care and I hope you're able to get back to at least some semblance of normality sooner than expected.
Thoughts also go out to those in country Victoria who are now in the midst of floods too due to the aftermath of the same weather system that hit Qld last week

I flew back from Mildura on Saturday, before the worst, and I could see from the air it was already an inland lake Horsham will completely submerged in the next 72 hours.

^Yeah, that has been the one positive of the disaster - community spirit has been amazing. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com
