HELP!! I WANT TO STOP SMOKING, BUT IT'S KILLING ME! I've gotten to the point where I really want to stop smoking, y'all. I'm sitting here at this computer drinking coffee and fiending like a muhfugga. I am trying to resist the urge to jump in my car and drive to the gas station to buy a pack of Newport Medium 100's. I don't know if I can do it, y'all! That urge is so powerful. I know if I can get my hands on some of those patches I will be OK, but I'm trying to wait for the Costco coupons to come up for redemption on January 6, $15 off each pack, which is a BIG savings when they cost like $60 for 21 patches. OK, maybe I can do this: I'll buy 3 packs of cigs, which will last me until Thursday. Then I go to Costco and get the patches and start my regimen then...

Gurl! Me too!! I try, but then my family does some dumb shit and it's either go outside and smoke or start yelling and slapping folk... :disbelief: Same problem when I was working, I had quit after my surgery, but when I got back to work folk started twerking last nerves and whatnot. Sometimes I think I smoke so I can shorten my lifespan because I'm tired of being angry and miserable all the time. I think getting sex would help, but then again there's that possibility of having to deal with man drama. :disbelief: good luck though! At least try to work down to Lights, and cutting back to 3-5 a day. That's what I'm starting with. There's a book that really helped me, the Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. Makes you really think about yourself and why you are smoking. I got it through Amazon. :hug: | |

I quit smoking crack.....difficult, very difficult. Then i quit smoking cigs.....not as difficult but still a bitch.

what worked for me was it just became a competition between me and the urge. Every single time I wanted to smoke, I would have an inner debate with myself. It would always end with me choosing and deciding not to smoke.
Some times were more difficult than others, but it eventually got easier. Within a few weeks, the physical dependency was over and I acknowledged that any other cravings were just mental habits. That is when it became easy for me. I think that was about two years ago.
Don't smoke Shyra. You can do it. People dumber than you have done it. Get pissed off at smoking, think of it as your enemy. Hell....it literally IS your enemy. Don't rationalize, there is no reason to continue to smoke. Not stress, not appetite control....nothing. You're paying lots of money to take years off your life....fuck that shit.
Don't let the failure of others influence you. If others have tried and weren't successful, that has jack shit to do with you. If YOU have tried before and failed, that has JACK SHIT to do with THIS attempt. You CAN do it.

Like Jersey said, and CarrieMPLS said in a different smoking thread, it comes down to battling out each urge. Insteadof thinking OMG HOW AM I GONNA GO WITHOUT EVER SMOKING AGAINNNNNNN???? Focus on getting through this urge, then the next, then the next, and each time will become a little easier.
Then one day you'll get to the point where the smell of ciggarette smoke makes you dry heave. It's pretty awesome.

I'll be 5 years smoke free on the 6th. I went cold turkey and the first few weeks were a nightmare. The thing is it really is hard for the first couple of weeks but it does get easier.
One thing I did was print a copy of something similiar to the following It tells you how your body benifits as time passes.
Within ... 20 minutes Your blood pressure, pulse rate, and the temperature of your hands and feet will all return to normal. 8 hours Remaining nicotine in your bloodstream will have fallen to 6.25% of normal peak daily levels, a 93.25% reduction. 12 hours Your blood oxygen level will have increased to normal and carbon monoxide levels will have dropped to normal. 24 hours Anxieties peak in intensity and within two weeks should return to near pre-cessation levels. 48 hours Damaged nerve endings have started to regrow and your sense of smell and taste are beginning to return to normal. Cessation anger and irritability peaks. 72 hours Your entire body will test 100% nicotine-free and over 90% of all nicotine metabolites (the chemicals it breaks down into) will now have passed from your body via your urine. Symptoms of chemical withdrawal have peaked in intensity, including restlessness. The number of cue induced crave episodes experienced during any quitting day will peak for the "average" ex-user. Lung bronchial tubes leading to air sacs (alveoli) are beginning to relax in recovering smokers. Breathing is becoming easier and the lungs functional abilities are starting to increase. 5 - 8 days The "average" ex-smoker will encounter an "average" of three cue induced crave episodes per day. Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus has now decreased. 13 years Your risk of smoking induced tooth loss has declined to that of a never-smoker (2006 study). 15 years Your risk of coronary heart disease is now that of a person who has never smoked. 20 years Female excess risk of death from all smoking related causes, including lung disease and cancer, has now reduced to that of a never-smoker (2008 study).
I would look at it during my low moments and it would motivate me. One drag and you're back to square one. I havent felt as healhy in years and the money I saved from quitting got me a holiday to Australia. All the best and good luck to you. Good luck! I know in NYC you can call 311 and get those patches, I think for free, to help you quit. Maybe there is something similar where you live? Might be worth looking into. The check. CALL ME LUCKY... i chose to stop smokin a week ago today. i cut a nic-patch (14mg) in half and have used about a half every other day sence. for me the trick has been drinking water whenever i want a smoke. when the urge comes on, it can feel like an acid trip. but drinking water takes that edge off. good luck to you. i am KING BAD!!!

i ant say i was a heavy smoker maybe 6 the most in a day but i quit cold turkey. then my 122 lb body morphed to 170lbs..still can't lose it 6-7 yrs later...meh well i finally got boobs ..so what if i'm 10-15 lbs overweight? i don't wear a cross?!!? i wear a prince symbol I When Prince's cum dries, diamonds are formed. no one tops prince in concert! | |

1. Why do you smoke? Be truthful to yourself. Can you achieve the answer to this question without smoking?
2. Why do you want to give up? What's the core reason? Think of something that really moves you, emotionally. For instance, it may be; "To see my daughter's eyes on her wedding day", something you may not do if you die of lung cancer.
3. What's more important; 1 or 2?
Stop whingeing about doing it and just do it. It's a lot easier than you think. You do not need cigarettes. Believe the facts of the effects of smoking. They WILL shorten your life and make you significantly less healthy. Everytime you think you do need to smoke, remember your core answer to number 2. This is your objective.
