The Dead Bird's In Arkansas.. Not to sound paranoid. But surely everyone has heard about the thousands of bird's that where found dead in Arkansas, and now people in gas mask suits are picking them up to examine them. No one know's while it happened there is thing's like ow ''cold weather'' or ''wind'' killed THOUSANDS of bird's. Pssh this is seriously something straight out of The X-Files. There's something behind this....

are they all kinds of different birds? are they birds that should have migrated south for winter? if so, why didn't they leave?

Red-winged Blackbirds in the northern reaches of the range are migratory, spending winters in the southern United States andCentral America. Migration begins in September or October, but occasionally as early as August. In western and middle America, populations are generally non-migratory. [11]
was it colder than usual?

Not to bad from what they said. People have used crazy excuses, fireworks[if that was true there would have been many dead in my town lol]

Here's a plausible explanation from someone on Yahoo
Ok I know that all of you don’t live in Arkansas and you don’t know what’s going on down here but some of you are just being silly. I live in Arkansas just about two or so hours away. There were a lot of storms going on that night, the temp dropped very fast and people were shooting off fireworks. The birds could have been scared into flying at night. With this species of bird when one fly’s they all fly that’s how they feel safe. its part of their natural defense system to flock together in flight. These birds do not normally fly at night, and could have flown into an extremely cold patch of air being pushed by strong winds and died of hypothermia. It wouldn’t take long for such a small animal to die in such a manor. And the trauma to all the vital organs was caused bye the animal reaching its terminal velocity as it fell to earth and smashed into the ground

Birds are very fragile | |

Exactly.
And these birds migrate in the 10s of thousands....so 5000 dead makes total sense.

And in the last week, there've been 30-40 degree temperature drops in a matter of hours around these parts. [Edited 1/3/11 21:16pm]

we have had temp flux here ranging from 20 to 45 degrees in 24 hr periods over the past 2 weeks here

The same Yahoo poster said this about the fish.
As for the fish there are certain breeds of fish that get together and stay in large schools. Whatever happens to one happens to them all. Drum is such a fish. This breed of fish is also very sensitive to temperature; they all could have been spending too much time swimming near factories, waste water run off. there are many food canning factories that pour non-toxic vegetable juice leftovers into the river and because its warmer then the rest of the water in the river schools of fish congregate there to stay warm......and if the factory shuts down for the holidays that warm water immediately stops pouring into the river, and if the fish do not have ample time go get used to the colder water they can go into shock and die. That’s why they tell you to leave a new fish in the bag and put the whole bag fish and all in the tank for about two or more hours so the fish can slowly get used to the new temperature or it will die. The fish could have died right after a holiday plant shut down.

it's very sad. they're saying the necropsied birds show signs of trauma, and speculating that they were somehow startled into flying in the dark whereupon they crashed into things.
birds do, in fact, get something called 'night fright', where if one startles they all do and will fly blindly until they crash. it's why i leave a night light on for my birds.
it's tragic though, for such a large flock of them to gave been affected. poor sweeties

Someone should post the article (Im lazy). This story isnt nearly as mysterious as the OP makes it out to be.
EDIT: Heres the article http://news.blogs.cnn.com...=allsearch [Edited 1/4/11 13:15pm]
It was probably stress from all the fireworks that did it. [Edited 1/4/11 13:16pm]

I agree, I stay in Memphis and when I heard the news, I was kind of freaked out. Memphis reporters were making it seem as if they all fell out of the sky at the same time, and that is what freaked a lot out. I don't think they took into consideration what you have just explained. The temperatures in the south are very unsteady this year..... one day it will be 70 and the next morning it will be 20. on New Year's Eve, it was around 72 degrees....but by 9 p.m., the temp was down to 30 degrees and counting. So that probably threw the birds for a loop.

It's weird though, like whales beaching themselves. There is a theory they hate SONAR (or maybe more than a theory) and it makes them swim the wrong direction.
Or maybe they got hit by lightning, or cold weather My Legacy

Wow, shit like this always happens.
Something odd happens makes big news then suddenly reports from all over start popping up right down to claims like "omg, I found a dead bird at the frozen counter at the supermarket!" and then people try to link it all together. Weird things do happen all the time they just don't get international coverage.
It's classic.
