I like to think most people only have the intentions of relating to your experience and sharing (with the intent on appearing knowledgeable of course) but it comes across as them putting down your experience.

Yeah hopefully that's the case sometimes. Of course it can't all be ill intent. But when it is indeed just a matter of wanting to relate to what was being said, then if someone tells you that they surfed a 30 foot wave and you once surfed a 35 foot wave, you might be better off just saying you agree that surfing huge waves is incredibly exciting and then perhaps follow up with a question to fuel their story.
