Yeah, I figured as much but folks swear by them. Is it solid gold? I'm in the market for a solid gold watch cuz I'm allergic to everything else including stainless steel.

Rolex is OVER rated in every way possible.

Solid gold is misleading. Most gold watches are really only about 75% gold.

Depend on what u cal simple.

$3/5k should do the trick.

One big issue is that the price of gold continues 2 RISE.......and it really impacts the prices of these watches at the low price points.

My bf has one but that's only because his sis is in the Navy stationed in Okinawa Japan and she bought him one for cheap over there. He wears it only on the "nice" occasions but to be honest, just looking at it, it looks like the average watch. Nothing really spectacular about it. And also to be honest again, the Fossil watch I bought him for his birthday last year looks better than the Rolex...just sayin'.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I have one, but it was my dad's. I love it.

When I was younger, it was a status symbol because they are expensive. Nowadays, there are so many other expensive watches that I'm not sure Rolexes have the panache they used to.

But I still think they look great.

thumbs up! I see, good to know. What do you think about Baume and Mercier watches? I have no idea what makes a "good" watch a good watch.

That's nice when it's a family heirloom. mushy

When I go watch shopping the salespeople be talking about the Swiss movement and accurate timekeeping. Don't MOST watches have Swiss movement and keep good time? I'm trying to understand what about the craftsmanship makes them so special.

I don't have one

I know a couple of folks that do

I dont have an opinion

on what high end watch

is better than the next

but I do know that Rolex

has great customer service

and their watches last forever

High end watches are kinda like high end cars

owners of those things have preferences

of what they like beyond the product itself

whether it be style, quality, performance or customer service

They keep CRAPPY time. And they break a lot. Mine's broken right now. I would never buy a Rolex if I needed to know what time it was.

It's jewelry. Heck, I'm not even sure I'm ever going to get mine fixed. I'll just wear it and look cool, and when I need to know the time, I'll dod what I always do:

Look at my cell phone!

Yesterday, I was driving past a jewelry store and they had a sign up advertising a jewelry/rolex auction. I went in and they had several pre-owned rolexes. One from the 70s and the other from the 80s. They looked exactly alike (and just like the new ones), except one had a blue face and the other a mother of pearl. I had been thinking about getting one for awhile but I want to look at other watches too. But the price was right. hmmm

highfive I was thinking the SAME thing. I usually wear Gucci or Movado watches with no numbers on the dial, so getting the time right is a 50/50 proposition for me. lol

Here is a REAL watch. All I know about it is that Steve McQueen wore it, so that makes it a REAL watch (even if it is a Rolex subsidiary!)

Speaking of Rolex's, I saw this story yesterday on Yahoo after I went to the Jewelry store, maybe it's a sign. lol

$9.95 James Bond Rolex sells for $66,100 on eBay

So imagine this: you decide to sell your 52 year-old watch on eBay for $9.95 and when the auction is over you end up with $66,100. Not bad, right? That's what happened to Bob. The retired Navy doctor decided to sell a few of his old things and put his Rolex Submariner Ref 5510 dive watch up for auction on eBay. He bought the watch from a Navy Exchange 52 years ago and wore it almost every day for more than 35 years.

To his shock, a few days into the auction, his watch started climbing to more than $30,000. After speaking with his son, the two figured out that the watch was an extremely rare model that Sean Connery wore as James Bond in Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. During the final hours of the auction, a bidding war rose the price to more than $66,100. (It didn't hurt that he has a collection of pictures of him wearing the watch, including at a diving party with Superman himself, Christopher Reeve.) For more information about the auction and a bunch of pictures, check out Hodinkee.com.

If you had the choice, would you rather party with Superman or take the $66,100? It would be a tough choice. Christopher Reeve was one cool guy.

That Hodinkee site is a wealth of info about watches. This story was on there.

Formula One Boss Bernie Ecclestone Attacked For Hublot - Hublot Turns Into Ad: Your Thoughts?

You may have heard that a few weeks back, Formula One head-honcho Bernie Ecclestone was brutally attacked during an attempted robbery. Among the items targeted by the thieves was Ecclestone's own Hublot Big Bang King Power. Apparently, the thieves went for the wristwatch, but the 81 year old Bernie wasn't ready to give it up without a fight.

Bernie fought back and the thieves left without the watch, but Ecclestone did suffer some serious bruises - but you already knew that, because the image of the bruised and battered F1 boss was turned into an ad within days and run in the Financial Times and International Herald Tribune over the weekend. The ad reads "See what some people will do for a Hublot".

The ad attracted sharp criticism from some, and Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver told The Watch Lounge “Of course it’s not an advertisement, but a series of 3 campaigns. It’s our mission to stand up against hatred, racism, cowardice and violence...in my opinion, we can’t make and sell quality and prestige without denouncing such wild behaviour".

So Biver is saying it's not an ad, but rather a call to arms, or more accurately, a call to disarm. What do you guys think about this particular ad; are you buying Biver's explanation that this is a campaign to end violence or is it a publicity stunt using some jarring imagery sure to capture the eyes of readers?
