Promise? How many of you make promises to others and if you do make them, how often do you actually keep them? Have you ever broken one and, if so, why? What would make you break one, especially to one that you care about?
I will make them... when I know for certain that I will never change my mind. I don't allow anyone to make a promise to me as they are most often times broken. I tend to live by this: Never make a promise, as what your truth is now may not be your truth when it comes time to make good on that promise.

Good thread! It reminds of someone a few days ago who promised to leave the Org. Let me see if I can remember who it was ...

I personally NEVER make promises because you never know what circumstances are going to come up during the period between making a promise and actually carrying out that promise. Ultimately, the word 'promise' is pretty much meaningless - in my opinion.

I agree... it means absolutely nothing. And I find that sad.

Delete me and I will go! I am waiting! You don't need to keep posting while you are waiting for someone to delete your a/c though, in fairness

I break promises only if I cannot keep them due to problems, or realize that it's wrong to keep them.
But I will not make a promise which I do not mean to keep.

I always try to keep my promises

I have proven that to be true! . I didn't spell "correctly" correctly. [This message was edited Fri Jan 31 17:51:55 PST 2003 by AzureStar]

I tend to live by this: Never make a promise, as what your truth is now may not be your truth when it comes time to make good on that promise. Good topic, Azure. I think there are a few different kinds of folks, when it comes to promises: 1. Those who mean what they say (and say what they mean), who make and keep promises with no problem, cause they know what they are and are not capable of. They may not actually use the word "promise", but basically it's the same as saying you're going to do something for the good of someone else or both of you--and the other person believes it. 2. Those who at best will "try" to do something for someone else, but don't necessarily want to have to "commit" to anything. Those are people you can't always count on when they say they'll call or email you or make plans with for the weekend--or you're not even sure that they'll pick up their kids from school (my cousin's husband, i.e.)! This is because they can't usually see past their own needs and wants in the moment. These people are usually single or have a spouse who takes care of everything, so they don't have to worry about anything other than themselves. Kinkos would have me as a live in for good if my power cords were suddenly missing. I'd just make myself at home in front of their computers!

Hmmm... perhaps my life of broken promises with a certain family member of mine. As well as some lyrics that I read. Like you didn't know.

Delete me and I will go! I am waiting! Wait a minute? You're leaving? Why? What happened? Just taking a break and I am too weak to stop myself from posting. Now... tell me what you think about promises!

I often swear to God that I will make good on certain things but then I don't. I rarely make a promise to any friend and not keep it.

Anji... Did I read your post wrong or did you not just contradict yourself? You read my post wrong. The promises I make to God are to do with myself. For example, I often swear to God that I'll be good and wake up on time from that point on, if the tube arrives right now and I get to wherever I am going to on time. It almost always works but then I forget to keep my end of the bargain. You will often catch me praying at bus / stube stations if you look carefully. The promises I make to my friends, are usually the ones I keep. I guess it's easier to let myself and my God down because I will always be forgiven.
