Not sure about the last question yet. You can always reinstall it to see and uninstall it if the problem continues. But for now I would uninstall Firefox, delete the folder if it's not gone already, restart your PC and run the scans in normal mode. If there is something trying to use your internet to do evil behind the scenes the scans may not find it in safe mode (or they might, but I would do all this in normal mode).
I still think it's possible that you may have something that is regenerating itself with different names. This is very common, but running multiple scans with updated search parameters will usually find and isolate the little bastards. When they don't, removing them can start to get more tricky. In your case it would definitely involve following the paths to their locations, removing them and searching for them in your registry until you got to the root file to stop it from regenerating. But that's for later. For now, just try the uninstall, delete and rescan. Lets see if you find anything else.
and if that doesn't work you can go with my favorite standby...
Honestly, if he wasn't moving right now I'd just suggest that he go to Wal-Mart or Best Buy and pick up one of their hugely reduced desktop packages. They've both had really good systems for $400 (good size monitor included), decent systems for less. |

I wanna switch to laptop (since I'll be travelling more) in a few months. Maybe I'll ask for a whole new sh-bang for my birthday.
Restarted and running first scan now.

Cool, let us know what happens. But, umm, stay off the computer when scanning!
Best Buy has a Toshiba laptop on sale right now for $299 that is more than adequate for everything other than serious gaming, heavy music production and the like. For regular everyday use it's great. 2.2ghz processor, 2gb ram (expandable to 4gb), 250gb hard drive, dvd/cd burner, wireless and wired lan ready. Bought my niece and nephew each one for Christmas. I've opened and used both of them and I'm very happy for the price. This one right here.

If you are using the computer while scanning, especially the internet, things are changing and moving around while the scan is taking place. It can miss things, or things can be added to areas that were already scanned by malicious bugs. You may even want to start over. |

Now I can't seem to get rid of either even though I uninstalled something called "yahoo toolbar" in the MF Add/Remove thingy.

When you were installing some stuff on your browser, did you let them install it just because of that "Terms and Agreement" clause? I realize when you download add-ons, if you let that check mark stay on there, it'll be on your site. I always unchecked it so it wouldn't appear on it. My IE browser has a Yahoo toolbar but it was already there when my brother gave me the new desktop.
You didn't check your Add/Remove Programs on your Control Panel to see if those toolbar apps were on there because that could be the cause.

Yes sir.
The AVG was already running while we were having our little exchange.
I ran Spybot S&D when I went to bed. This morning it had some HuntbarStoolbar thing it found. I removed. But I rember it had found the same once or twice prior.
I will take my ass off the computer and run both scans again.
EDIT:
Did a search on the Huntbar.Stoolbar. I will try some things but I don't feel qualified to be editing registry stuff (and been warned by a certain techy orger to not touch ) . So if I can't get it by other means, I will wait till I see this particular orger over the holidays.

You don't have no pop-up blockers in your browser? They do that when you go to some sites. I used to get mad about that all the time too. |

The pop up is not from individual stores. It's the same thing which pops up in different shopping sites (just switches the store name, but looks the same) wanting me to enter my email. |

John, do you know if you do a search for Remove shop to win pop up, this thread is the fifth item down in the list? Anywho, here's one possible solution that comes up. I haven't read the whole thread to see if you've already covered this, so apologies is this is old info.
Go to Program Files (if you have Windows 7, it'll be in Program Files (x86)), and find the SelectRebates/ ShopAtHome file (sorry I don't remember the exact name, but it's one of the two... you'll recognize it when you see it). Once you find the file, highlight it and delete it. I like to press Shift + Delete to delete it right away instead of it going to my Recycle Bin .
When you try to delete it, you may get a notice saying that a file is still open. Simply pull up your Task Manager , select the "Processes" Tab, and search for SelectRebates/ ShopAtHome (again, I don't recall which one, but it's one of the 2 and you'll recognize it when you see it). Once you find it, highlight it, and click "End Process".
Now you can go back to the Program Files, and delete the file from there.
Good Luck!

Well then maybe that particular "techy orger" should be the one helping you try to fix your PC.
The dreaded, "don't touch your registry" warning! If it wasn't meant to be touched the run/regedit function wouldn't exist. It's really not that big a deal if you don't just go in there randomly deleting things for no reason. But if your other options are to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system, or to buy a new pc, the risk of editing your registry is totally nonexistent. Also, there are some viruses, trojans and malware that can only be fully removed by doing so. Anyway, hope what you've done so far has helped. |

I'm talkin about PositivityNYC.
She's not advising against having to do some stuff through registry...she just knows it shouldn't be me to do it.
The PC is fine right now. I'm so glad it was just an add-on. And that I can use Firefox again, I really have grown out of love (if ever I was) with IE. It's slow for me vs. Firefox. [Edited 12/1/10 17:50pm] |

Cool. Glad it's workin' for you again. Not being able to shop comfortably sucks. And I will never go back to IE unless it's for something like what you just went through. I hate it now. |
