Those "disc thingies" are called spools and are supposed to elongate the earlobes. One of the signs of the Buddha is that he has elongated earlobes, from his days as a prince who wore spools.

I have my ears pierced eight times - four in each ear, although they are not symetrical. My left ear has 4 that go up to about mid-lobe. The right ear has the lower two even with my left, then skip a space, then #3. The fourth hole is up on the top part. I used to have my left ear pierced 5 times but the third (middle) hole on that side was one that my friend and I did one day in high school, when I was bored and it closed up several years ago. All the rest were done at ear piercing places like Claire's or whatever.

My first "set" was when I was 6; I begged my mom to let me get them pierced for my birthday and she said okay as long as I promised not to cry. They used a piercing gun, and I remember thinking it hurt (probably not that much, but to a 6 year old it was painful) and fighting back tears. In hindsight, I probably could have bawled my eyes out - my mother wouldn't have yanked the earring out after it was done. lol The second set was when I was 13 or 14. The remaining piercings (besides the one I did myself when I was 17) were done in college.

I used to wear all different kinds of hoops and earrings. Now I alwas wear one pair of pave diamond hoops and one pair of amethyst tear-drop shaped studs. Both were gifts and I never take them out; sometimes I'll add other earrings though.

My mom got her ears pierced when she was in nursing school -- her co-nursing students chilled her earlobes with ice, then used a needle and put a potato behind the lobe so they didn't stick the needle in her head. smile

im going to pierce what is called known as my auricle and perhaps my lobe..

the auricle i am planning will look like this:

not me in the picture

who else has done this in here...my only fear is the pain and if it will or if it might get infected..but i guess i have to accept that if i truly do want right?

I have my right ear pierced there. It's a little closer to the outer curve of the lobe though. It didn't hurt any worse than when I got the piercings on my lower lobes. (Disclaimer - I also have a nose piercing and some tattoos and a pretty decent threshhold for pain. The piercing I got about half way up the ear on the edge hurt the most out of everything, including the nose and tats.) I've never had any problems with infection, but I am always pretty vigilent using the Bactene and following the cleaning directions.

thank you! like i've always wanted to get my ear pierced there. your advise is very reassuring and it makes me less worried. lately i've been telling people about getting pierced and the first thing they say is, " oh its going to hurt so much and your going to get it infected" which worried me alot...but if i follow your advise i think i will be okay...thank you very much!

You're welcome. Just make sure you go to a reputable and clean place. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember for sure, but I think they used a stud and a piercing gun to do mine, now they might want to use a needle and a hoop (that's what I had to do with my nose) -- a hoop makes it easier to clean b/c you can slide the hoop around and make sure the Bactene gets into the hole. The hoop I wear now is much thinner than that - it's just a regular earring/hoop. I always take it out when I get my hair cut b/c the stylists always catch their combs on it when they are combing my hair. I am so used to it that I don't do that; I leave it in all the time - in the shower, swimming, sleeping.

Pierced. One in each ear done when I was 8 years old.

When I was younger I used to wear all kinds of earrings. I remember back in the 80's we thought it was cool to wear mismatched earrings.

I rarely wear earrings now. If my hair is down, it is pointless because you cannot see them. I look silly in big dangly earrings.

On the rare occasion that I wear them, the little monster tries to take them out.

Ouch!

I don't know why, but somehow I have a strong antipathy to jewellery, especially metal jewellery, especially on ears. Can't stand it. I always ask my women if they mind not putting on jewellery, because I find it so "disgusting" somehow... Is that normal?

My ears aren't pierced, of course.

The weirdest thing is, I never ever had a hair growing out of my ear until the exact day I hit 40.

Then, BOOM! Hairs were sprouting up all over.

At least my nose is relatively hairless. Except for one hair that will grow right in the center of my nose. And for some reason, I almost never see it until it's about 1/2 inch long.

I know this is gross but I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a long time. Which reminds me, my chest is very hairy, and the dang hair is now mostly gray. Bummer.

I'm afraid to look at the hair on my back.

I'll be glad when Magnum, PI-type hairy chests are vogue again.

And in related hair news, I'm growing a beard! Four days into it. Two weeks is the longest I've ever gone without shaving but this time, I'm going all the way to the end of the year, at the very least.

My mother had mine pierced at the age of 6 months. After I turned 16, I started to pierce them myself further, I now have 4 in each ear. On my left I have 3 lobe piercings and 1 tragus piercing, and on my right ear 3 lobe piercings & 1 helix piercing.

I had my ears pierced too when I turned 13. I remember begging my mom to let me get my ears pierced, since all of the other girls in my class had them. I was soooo excited when she gave me the go ahead to get it done. lol

I had a second hole pierced in both ears around 1990. Funny thing is, lately, I haven't been wearing earrings all that much. I should start wearing them again. I always worry about the holes closing up on me.

I got my ears pierced at a department store when I was 13. (This was in the early days of free range piercing - my mom actually got hers done at the doctor's office.) They used these earrings that had a point on the end of the posts - they just punched them through.

Unbeknownst to me, they put a piece of cork behind the piercee's earlobe to they wouldn't stab her in the neck - or themselves in the fingers. When that earring hit the cork, it made a terrible squeaking sound. I thought they had done something awful to my ear! omfg

comfort I had the same thing happen to me. When they stuck the earrings in my ear, it made the most horrible crunching sound. What's worse is that is was at the department store, and the place where you sat to have it done was in a prominent place, where people could watch. I remember saying over and over again, "Ow!!" and crying, because that shit hurt. The second piercings I got were done with a gun, which was a hell of a lot less painful and easier (not to mention quicker).

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Because I have an allergy to nickel that is in earrings, I have to wear earrings from a company called Simply Whispers. They seem to be the only earrings that I can wear that do not make my ears get all puffed up, pussy and itchy. Does anybody else have this allergy? I remember being happy to discover Simply Whispers earrings. I thought I was the only one who had an allergy to nickel. lol

I just put earrings in both ears, and have come to the realization that I need to buy some more, smaller earrings. When you have more than one piercing, and you want to wear earrings in all of them, it makes it hard to do that if you have earrings that are too big or bulky.

I have eight total, four in each ear: three in each lobe and a daith piercing in each. The daith piercings are permanent obviously, but I take the hoops and studs out of the lobes each night because they irritate me when I sleep.

My ears are... born again Virgins. pray

I got the lobes pierced on two seperate occasions when I was younger. I had alot of allergies to metals, and for some reason, I could never keep ANYTHING in without it becoming horribly infected. So I gave up.

As I got older, the allergies have since gotten a LITTLE better; I have a 10k hoop in my nose, a bioflex labret stub in my lip, and two titanium bars in my tongue. I'll probably go and try one more time to get my ears done; I'll just have to wear real gold or titanium.

cool I used to work with a girl who had a piercing in the tragus area. It looked good, although I am fearful that it would be more painful to be pierced there than it would be to be pierced on an earlobe.

I usually wear 14k gold and I've been ok with that. Nickel is used in a lot of white gold so I avoid it.
