Well, imagine how many idiots you would have to deal with every single day. My dad said that he would see such horrible things that it made him angry sometimes. Senseless stupid shit. Bad parents, drunk ass losers who murder people on the roads and the fatalities to deal with afterwards, abusive men and women in domestics, I could go on and on. Thieves, scumbags, general meanness, etc. It's like being in a war every day.

I'm glad I'm not a cop, I'd definitely be in prison.

Oh, and for whoever asked why some of them drink, that's also why.

lol yes, I agree.

I do think that the profession attracts some people who are interested in being bullies (as a job that works with kids might attract pedophiles, or politics might attract power-hungry individuals), but for the most part cops are like the rest of us--flawed but not necessarily evil.

lol I guess I'm a more easygoing sort or haven't had bad encounters with cops to have strong negative feelings. I don't freak when I see them stopped on the highway with the speed camera. I just slow the hell down if I'm over the speed limit. If I'm driving and one happens to be behind me, I don't freak. I haven't done anything wrong and I know he's just a part of the traffic just as I am.

What I don't understand are the folk who make the blanket statement, "I hate cops. Cops are scum. They're all crooks," etc. I ask you this, if someone broke into your house and terrorized you and your family, who would you call for help? Tyrone? razz

I understand folk have had bad encounters with the police and that there are a lot of dirty cops still in power, but I have to believe that their numbers do not outnumber the majority who really want to do good and serve their communities. I support them.

That's great that your son is a police officer. It is a very dangerous job, one that I certainly could not do. It's great that there are people like that who put their own lives on the line to protect others. And he gets to travel around with a cute German Shepard in his cruiser, which is definitely a nice perk.

hug I've never heard of Malinois before, but they do kinda/sorta look like German Shepards. Being proud of your kids is a definite reward to being a great parent. smile

1 st one I ever met was Seth's partner Buster ~ his department uses these dogs ~ and Labs for the drug end of it ( sniffing ) ~ other local departments use German Shepards though nod

The only time I'm not amuse about law enforcers is when they want me to pull my car over because of something that might be wrong with the car itself. In Arkansas, Louisiana, & (especially) Mississippi, law enforcers would pull you over if there is something about your transportation that doesn't look "right" in their eyes.

Other than that, I feel safe when they're in the neighborhood. At least gas stations & corner stores don't get rob when law enforcers' presents are high during most nights of the week.

I've had 2 encounters with cops on duty (the rest have been on their down-time)

Once was when I got locked out of my apartment - I had nothing, no wallet, no loose change, no car, etc. So I went to the police station to ask for help. The cop locked up the shop, drove me to my place and tried to break in using a credit card falloff but to no avail. I couldn't break any windows, since they were on the outside of the building on the second floor. He was helpful, but not much help.

I don’t like them or trust them, but when ur walking down a road late at night and see them its a different story!

When I was in Jamaica last year I decided to go shopping on my own and then came to the realisation that when the Jamaicans told me the shops are only a 15 min walk away and it was actually nearer an hour for this British girl in the swelting heat, I did start to get a bit scared. But during my walk I saw a lot of them and boy ive never been so glad to see police in all my life!

I know it's hard, if not impossible not to take this the wrong way, but that sounds so "white."

Which isn't to say that I disagree. I agree with you but being a Black male, that's not the norm for my experience.

Well I am white, so I certainly wouldn't try to sound any other way. But I've also lived in Portland, LA and the Bay Area for almost all of my adult life and have many friends of every color, sexual preference, religious belief and any other category you want to box people up in. I'm not denying that there's an ugly side to some officers (just like there is some citizens), particularly in large cities. But the fact that people assume they are all that way and act differently in their presence is part of the problem. I understand full well this is a simplification, but so is saying all cops are evil racists, or power hungry assholes, or whatever else you want to call them. I believe full well that what I said above is the truth as every time I've seen any of my friends have interactions with them, so long as they act respectful and do as their told there has never been a problem. If you treat a cop like an asshole, don't do what they tell you to do (whether you agree with it or not, because it's not a choice), or if you've actually broken a law, they're GOING to do their jobs they way they've been trained to do them.

It sounds "white" because your experiences with cops are colored (no pun intended) solely by your feelings and by an assumption that they will treat you the way you treat them.

This is an experience that is, for the most part, a luxury that those with white privilege know and others will never know.

In my experience, both when I was in the wrong and when I wasn't, cops didn't give a flying fuck about my respectful attitude and treated me like a piece of shit. Almost every single time - and I've had about half a dozen run-ins with the police. I'm white, btw.

To answer the OP's question: Scared, paranoid, heart racing. I hate when I see flashing lights in my peripheral vision and feel my trademark physiological panic - only to realize it's a fucking tow truck. lol disbelief

It's what you make it.

Funny you should mention this..

Yesterday I was in downtown Denver, having a salad.. As usual I love to observe people.

I saw 2 policemen, people were around, do you think the people would say hello, or even the policement offer acknowledgement.

Hell no! It is easier to look the other way than to say hi, how are you...

Ive dealt with some racist ass cops, but some cool ones too.

When I was in high school we went to a basketball game on a Friday night. I went to an all white high school in La Jolla, CA...it was me (mixed, but black), two of my black buddies, and one of our Mexican homeboys.

Well, we were smokin and drinkin the whole drive up from the ghetto to La Jolla and my friend locked his keys in the car. Didnt realize till after the game that we were locked out, so here we are in the parking lot screwed.

We see the cops driving thru the lot and our dumb asses flagged them down and asked for help. Totally forgot about what was in the car. The cops come up, shine the light in the car and say...

"Yeah, we can get the door open...but we're a little more concerned about the bong on the backseat and the two half empty 40 bottles on the floor."

DAAAAAMMMN!!!!!

Cop turns to us and says "We're gonna do this on the honor system. If I search each of you right now, what am I going to find?"

Now I had a dime of weed, Mexican homey had some fuckin crystal meth (he dealt), and my other boy had an ounce of weed on him. Our answer? "Nothing officer, we promise!"

He opened the door, made us pour out the beer...then he took the bong, laid it against the edge of the curb and kicked the shit out of it till it broke. He then smiled and said "Have a good night, gentlemen!"

No breathalizer...nothing.

Coolest fuckin cop ever!!!!!!!!

But I do have some bad stories too...maybe later.

police copters hovering over your suburb in the wee hrs of the morning doesnt make me paranoid, but it didnt make me feel safe....wanted to know wtf was going on, and who were they chasing.

http://www.themercury.com...-news.html

A YOUTH'S legs were broken during a dramatic police man-hunt following a robbery overnight.

The chase, which included road spikes and a helicopter, played out during the pre-dawn pursuit on Hobart's Eastern Shore this morning.

Police were targeting a gang of four youths who allegedly stole a large quantity of cigarettes from the Dodges Ferry Supermarket.

Police said the gang fled the scene in a stolen Nissan Skyline after workers at a nearby business confronted them.

Police established roadblocks at all major roads to the area, forcing the car to drive over road spikes in Risdon.

The damaged car continued to through suburban streets in Geilston Bay and Lindisfarne, with the police in pursuit.

The car eventually stalled at Flagstaff Gully Link Rd, where police said the offenders fled on foot.

One youth was arrested, while another was caught after he was run over by a police car.

Police said the youth "slipped and fell into the path of a slow-moving police vehicle".

He was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital and is being treated for two broken legs.

Police said they used hi-tech infra-red and night-vision equipment mounted in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to pursue the remaining youths who escaped into nearby bushland.

Two youths remain at large, while a 15- and 16-year-old are in custody.

Police said the cigarettes were recovered in the boot of the stolen vehicle.

as as much as i hate getting pulled over for speeding and other motor offences

when u need help and r in danger, they r always there to help, and for women like me it has made a difference - so 4 me that is the most important thing

Yup. My sister's boyfriend fucking stalked my family and beat up almost every one of my family members and one time when he was terrorizing my sister we called the cops and they came and did their interview with him. By the end of it, they were laughing and the cop was patting him on the back.

Depends on the situation. I've run into some nasty ones and nice ones, but in NYC, there are many that are not comfortable with NYPD officers, mainly because of its history in some communities. My brother is a retired NYPD officer and I have family in the police dept. So it's kind of bittersweet for me at times with cops because the bad ones makes it hard for the good ones.

That is horrible... i am sorry u had to go through that....i had nice ones, and they could tell i was the victim... they were helpful and caring and showed interest in my predicament.

because of this experience i respect what they do and the things they have to see and deal with on a daily basis.

IMO cops are like rodents. They're annoying as hell but they serve a purpose. Problem is when a cop, much like rodent, gets out of hand and starts feeling bold somebody somewhere will suffer needlessly. You can't fight rodents or cops in large numbers either.

They don't make me paranoid but they do make me angry and cautious...just like a rodent would do.

Cops are human beings just like the rest of us. Some of them are power hungry assholes, but some of them became cops out of a genuine desire to "protect and serve". A couple things to remember is that they have bad days just like the rest of us. That their bad days are usually MUCH worse than ours. That, as I said above, they are all different. And most importantly, they are trained to observe your behavior and respond accordingly while you're interacting with them.

To answer your question, no, they don't make me scared or nervous and they never have. Not when sober or high out of my mind. Not when doing absolutely nothing wrong or when being stone cold guilty. And I've had interactions with them under all of those circumstance. In my experience if you just act like yourself and do what they tell you to do there will be no problems. If you start acting weird, they start acting weird. In all but the most extreme cases (which I will admit do happen) it's a pretty safe bet that they're just doing their jobs. I mean, there's very little reason for us to be interacting with them if we haven't (most times) done something to get their attention (be it illegal or otherwise).

I know it's hard, if not impossible not to take this the wrong way, but that sounds so "white."
