Vintage video game systems: the US and Japanese differences I've been getting into playing all the older systems I played when I was younger like the NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis I've noticed awhile ago that Japanese versions
for example
the Nintendo Entertainment System (USA) and Famicom (Family Computer) (Japan) (1983-1985)
USA [img:$uid]http://i54.tinypic.com/1218qww.jpg[/img:$uid] cartridge [img:$uid]http://i53.tinypic.com/23wmfm.jpg[/img:$uid]
Japan [img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/2itlesi.jpg[/img:$uid] with the addon floppy disk drive [img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/apbua.jpg[/img:$uid] cartridge [img:$uid]http://i51.tinypic.com/2rc6bgh.jpg[/img:$uid]
Super Nintendo/Super Famicom (1991-1992) [img:$uid]http://i52.tinypic.com/258cegx.jpg[/img:$uid]

I like how you pick the best cartridge ever made for the SNES example.
Can't see the Japanese version of it though. [Edited 9/27/10 23:48pm]

fixed it
I've been wanting to play Chrono Trigger on the SNES for some time now but it's pretty expensive. I might just get the DS port of it instead because I found out you can't save "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

They really need to bring it to the Wii Virtual Console or whatever and XBOX Live. And whatever the PS3 counterpart is.
I mean damn, the Wii has like 3 Final Fantasy's available and the PS3 has a couple itself. Why not Chrono Trigger?
I'll never get the decision to leave it without a true sequel (Chrono Cross was okay I guess) but make that bullshit FFX-2

I read somwhere that the creator of Chrono Trigger was interested in making a true sequel to it but it depended on fan demand "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I'm pretty sure there's a ton of demand. If they were to sneak in a trailer for a hypothetical sequel at E3, I guarantee 25% of the crowd would faint. 40% would cry. 25% would be like "What's a Chrono Trigger?"
Edited to allow for the 10% like me that would be excited but not react in such a weak manner. [Edited 9/28/10 1:13am]

I remember reading that was a similar response to a Zelda game for the Gamecube
I've seen that Chrono Trigger DS did really well, as does most of the SquareEnix games. I probably will go with DS version then play the SNES version after I've been thinking about getting the Japanese Super Famicom version of it BUT I don't know Japanese. It's pretty easy to play Super Famicom games on US SNES systems and the Japanese version is alot cheaper "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Seriously?
Man I thought I was exaggerating a little and not giving video game addicts enough credit.
Too bad the Chrono Trigger Resurrection project got killed. That there should be a clue as to how much demand there is. Probably not that often that games from the 90's get fan-made sequels (or attempts at it at least).

I read it in either Gamepro or Play. The writer said "It was like a scene from a Michael Jackson concert. People fainting, jumping up and down, looks of awe..."
What? Chrono Trigger Resurrection?! tell me more "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

My SNES was one of those that turned yellow-ish after a point. I miss my baby and wish I hadn't turned her in for an N64. I never got to experience Chrono Trigger until much much later as an adult. Which is kinda sad, but at the time it came out, I was playing Yoshi's Island all night long and fooling with Street Fighter 2.
I really like the Famicon with the cool panels for the controllers. Wish I had one. Damn man, making me want to play some old school games again! Lucky for me, I have a PSP Slim with a lot of SNES titles on it. Ahh memories of game franchises when it was all about the content and the quality....

I'm thinking about getting a Famicom just because I like the design (top loader instead of that side loader that NES had ) plus the cartridges looked way better than the NES ones "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

In Europe, we also had the Megadrive. We bought one in 1991 with Sonic The Hedgehog on there.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah, Europeans got the best deal. You guys got the Super Famicom console but the Super Nintendo name too
the bad deal was that it's EXTREMELY easy to play Super Famicom games on the Super Nintendo and vice versa, the European SNES couldn't because it was PAL format "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

The more I see the original Japanese versions of the systems, the more I think the US got the raw end of the deal The original designs were alot better
for example, the NEC PC Engine aka the TurboGrafix 16

Anybody else ever have a Sega Mega-CD? I had the earliest version that the Megadrive slotted on top of, like this:
I also had an Amstrad GX4000. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

Sega had a lot of systems. The Genesis/Mega Drive alone had about 4 models or 5 models "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
