hmmm I've never really had fruitcake. Once I tasted a slice of some nasty fruit-infused cake-thing from one of those giant gift-sets that businesses send to their clients.

barf I wouldn't count that as even being real food.

But hey...I have had really strong (authentic fruit-filled) sangria while eating cake...does that count somehow?

Now THAT sounds good to me. lol

nod

A Colombian friend made it.

Coincidentally we met a Spaniard who promised to make us some "real" sangria...but alas he & his wife (our friend) went their separate ways.

sad

Ooh...what is that?

It's an Italian tradition. Some folk call em "honey balls" giggle but I never heard Italians call it that (at least not in the NY/NJ area). Always Struffoli.

I use a recipe from an old clipping my mom used but here's one from online:

aww! great thread. I love reading everyone's stories. smile

Dani, GREAT idea bout the thankful box..think I might adopt it if you don't mind!

Val, You've inspired me to start a family tradition of helping others. hmmm

for us, Thanksgiving is always at our house, we used to go here or there depending on who was having it but...now that I have kids I just cook a big ol turkey meal and who ever would like to join us is more than welcome. Some years it's just us and the kids, some years my mom and her husband come, some years a brother in law and family come. My dad would almost always come.....man I miss him. sad

As for Christmas, My brother has a big ol party the saturday before christmas. It's an everybody kind of party, kids, adults, friends, his family, his wifes family...my brother usually makes some kind of cocktail like a vampire martini or something red and we all get a little drunk smile it's a great time.

Christmas day for us is just at home, with the kids and presents and I usually cook a ham or a big roast or something. I'm usually bored stiff by 4pm....and wishing something was open.

hug

Hope you and the family have a great holiday!

Oh! I missed this post! hug

I hope you and yours have a great holiday too Val! smile

No...I've never tried that before.

But you just reminded me of another "tradition" in our household.

Every year for X'mas my wife and her sister pull out this "secret" recipe and they make a batch of Puerto Rican eggnog called "coquito".

It's eggnog with plenty of Bacardi and coconut milk. There are dozens of eggs that go into it.

There's so much cholesterol in that drink that literally you need 365 days for your arteries to recover. nod

Dozens of eggs? timeout It sounds interesting enough to try at least once, but I think all those eggs might produce a texture that'd me hurl. barf

I hate licorice, I'm sure I would've noticed hmmm perhaps the argentinian version ditched that and left it to the chilenos.

I (accidentally lol) perfected a recipe last year using egg substitute. It is delicious and did not lose a bit of flavor. drool

COQUITO

-1 15 oz can sweetened cream of coconut (coco lopez)

-1 12 oz can evaporated milk

-1 12 oz can sweetened condensed milk

-1 4 oz cup egg substitute (pasteurized)

-1 teaspoon vanilla extract

-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

-1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

-1 ½ cups white rum (or to taste)

Combine all in blender at low speed until smooth and serve in small glasses.

This is also a much simpler way to make it. The traditional method is a pain in the ass IMO.

Well, yeah, but "dozens" is no less than 24 eggs! I've never had eggnog quite THAT eggy.

I'm totally ignorant of coquito, so your word is gospel to me. lol

Not when I make it, it won't be!

It will look like the traditional English Christmas puddings without the dried fruit.

I have had some here that looked like this and only had nuts in them.

Yum!
