Oh settle down with THAT cup of coffee you're drinking! I know all too well about liquor stores in the hood. nod And there is a suburb that I know of that have liquor stores. It's called Metaire, Louisiana. I would know becaue I've live there for almost 6 years pre-Katrina.

We can go back and forth for days because in a little area I know called Lake Of The Isles and Brooklyn Park in Minneapolis, I cant find a liquor store the first unless you go to the hood, or by the mall ...and I don't see no types of advertisements for beer over there...and never have.

nod True. According to this article there were 28 ads in a mile radius in this Brooklyn neighborhood. Are these type of ads concentrated to the same degree in white neighborhoods???

Yes I DARE somebody say that there are Spike Lee Vodka ads in the suburbs...I want to see a picture lol

Why would a Brooklyn brownstone vodka ad be in the suburbs?

It's not only sold in Brooklyn. My question, and that of the folks in the article, is why is liquor so aggresively marketed in the black community, in general? This approach is not new or unique to this particular product. It's been an ongoing issue.

The neighborhood doesn't matter. Don't you find the idea that people have to be "protected from themselves" just a teeeeeeny bit insulting?

What is insulting is waking up in da morning and looking at a liquor or cigarette ad in your hood.

This is just proof that Spike Lee needs to remember that when you point a finger to shine the light on someone you are pointing four back at yourself.

I met him years ago and found him to be a sanctimonious, self-centered little shit with a Napoleonic complex. This is not to take away from the work that he has done, but he has been called on the carpet before for his actions including Bamboozled, charges of anti-semitism and racism, the disputes with Clint Eastwood, Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, Charlton Heston, and the USA government post-Katrina. While it can be good to have someone to shine a light on the wrongs, these incidents and this article are just an example of how Spike Lee forgetting that the light can be shined on him.

As for the number of billboards Spike may not have had anything to do with it, but collaborating on something that so clearly is a negative for the Black community both the liquor and the promotion, was most definitely not wise. Alcohol is one of the number one killers in the Black community, and while yes it is the responsibility of each person to drink or not drink, to constantly have it pushed in their faces sure doesn't help. I've lived in cities where there are billboards for alcohol and cigarettes right across from schools, on the side of corner store, on top of every retail business on a block. I currently live in the suburbs where there are no billboards except in the two very small areas where the majority of the Black community of this town lives. Also, in these areas are almost all of the liquor stores. I can walk to 3 from my house in less than 20 minutes, and there are 2 by the other area. There is one downtown, but that isn't a liquor store but a wine store (LOL, no Ripple or wine in boxes there).

I commend these teens for calling a spade a spade with Spike Lee, and for standing up against something they acknowledge is wrong in their community.

Keep in mind that the majority of the buildings that have billboards on them in this neighborhood are not owned by the people who live in them. They are owned by individuals who live in the suburbs and would never put a billboard on their own home but see nothing wrong with capitalizing on it through a property they do not inhabit. Once the billboard is up they get their checks and they could care less what ads go up on it as long as the check clears. Could Spike Lee have not done the ad? (yes he could have declined), would it have stopped another liquor promotion from going up? (doubtful). As long as rappers and our current R&B stars align themselves with alcohol labels and negative images then that's what will be directed at the black community. How many artist have tried to get you to buy their vodka by showcasing it in their every music video? When rappers were touting Cristal like it was the only thing to drink you had idiots from the hood buying $600.00 bottles of it at clubs and acting like they had it like that. No gun to their heads or their wallets just a case of individual bad judgement and a severe case of trying to be what you see on televison and magazines. Be nice if it could change but it won't.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I live in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn and I don't hold Spike Lee to any higher regard than I would any other celebrity. No one makes me buy a product simply by endorsing it. The community that feels offended by these practices needs to clean up their own front yard before expecting anyone else to do it for them. Why would I need to look at a billboard promoting alcohol when dudes are drinking it on the front porch or the corner right outside my door. These kids have the right idea but they also need to address their neighbors and friends who condone and engage in negative behavior that impacts the youth in their neighborhoods. Scapegoating a celebrity is a great way to get press for your cause but it's just for publicity. Spike Lee cannot order these ads removed and he can't do anythign about the billboards unless he owns them. talk to the property owners and then go up a notch to the companies hellbent on marketing their products to specific neighborhoods. That's who needs to be brought under scrutiny.

I just don't think Spike is getting a fair shake here. Advertising malt liquor and advertising a particular vodka product is a little different. Malt liquor ads exclusively are geared toward black people, where vodka, not so much. I dont know if anyone remembers Ice Cube grimacing for St. Ides back a few years ago. No one said shit, and Black folks still love Friday to this day. These kids can get some kudos for standing up for a cause, but I wonder what kind of content they have on their ipods. I wonder if they went to McDonalds and ate a horribly fattening (90 grams of fat) and high in sodium (980mg) McRib sandwich, whose billboard ads I'm sure are sprinkled throughout the hood, as well as the many unhealthy sugary energy drinks kids guzzle down. How many rappers out there have vodka products out there, and even though they may not have ads in the hood, their commercials are running 'round the clock on BET during 106 & Park, when alot of teens and young kids are watching. It just seems like people are beating up on Spike, because of a track record of him being a dick in the past.
