Ipod says no songs but they are on my Ipod harddrive. HELP!

A friend lent me her computer and she has an Iphone. My ipod is set to manual vs auto synch. When I connected the ipod to her computer to charge it, it began rotating as if to synch and when I unplugged the ipod it said I have NO SONGS. But when you click "about", the memory is full showing space is taken up with the songs.

I think it converted the songs to another format, perhaps the Iphone format so my regular ipod does not recognize them. If I go directly to the Ipod harddrive, I can find the music as mp3 and m4a files and if I double click them they will play. I thought maybe I had to change the format there but there doesn't seem to be anything to change.

Anyone else encountered this? Is there a fix? Please say yes! bawl

Did you connect your iPod to a mac or pc? smile What model iPod and generation do you have and what iTunes series did she use and you also . . 9.1 or 10?

Even so, shouldn't you be able to go back to your computer with your Itunes and reinstall them? No?

Is the memory definitely full with the songs, or is the memory just being used by something?

I plugged my ipod into a different computer once and it wiped out the songs on it. I know you say you had it on manual, but maybe her iPhone/computer is not set to manual and so her computer erased yours?

I'm not an expert, but apple has set it up this way so people don't share files, right?

PC. When I checked Itunes, the setting was for the Iphone. And the version is probably more updated? I can check later. The version I think my ipod is working with is 7.6 or something like that.

I have the Ipod 120, just after they discontinued the 160 Gig.

The thing is that the computer I have can connect to the internet but I don't have my own account to connect to it so I can't restore and upload. mad

When you check "about" it would show 25 gigs as "songs" Now it shows 25 gigs as "other". I connected the ipod just a bit ago and I can access the songs by drilling down through the harddrive and I can actually play them. They show up as weird file names M45WPX but the extensions are mp3 and or m4a.

Would putting it in disc mode help? I don't even know how to do that, and even after looking at instructions on the net! lol

Dang Sup sad

I went over to Apple Support and asked them, some of those geeks should will get back to me shortly.

Push come to shove there is a software application called iDump; I've used it to get music off of an iPod because a HDD went dead. When all other avenues have been explored you may wanna try that. Of course, my iPod nano was working fine so, I'm not sure if this software would work in your circumstances, but we should see before anything is done or maybe make matter worse.

IT will but then the restore wipes everything off it and I have to go back and re-do my songs. I create playlists instead of just synching and going off albums or artists or songs. it takes me longer to put my music on there lol

right I don't mean doing a factory restore, but when I wiped out my iPod by hooking it up to my work computer, I took it home and hooked it up and the computer re loaded all my playlists automatically.

You can wipe the iPod without wiping the computer & the playlists

I am wondering if the other computer reformatted something and your other computer might undo that change

Why don't you just sync those playlists?

long ass explanation.

Computer where I have my playlists I cannot use Itunes becuase I need an updated version.

Can't update because I can't download to the computer (restricted).

Where I can work with Itunes, there is no net access.

I can't reset the ipod on either becuase the computer with net access I can't acess I tunes & the computer without net access has itunes but it won't restore without the net.

Your life is complicated. :loll:

Sup the only thing I can suggest ......

You need to buy an external hard disk drive from Wal Mart, and copy your iTunes Library over to the external so if and when you get an account you can restore your itunes.

Is the iTunes on a laptop? I would suggest going to Barnes & Noble, Borders, the Mall, any major hospital or County Library were you can accesses free Wifi. I really don't think there is anyway around this. Sorry.

I didn't read this who thread and I'm extremely anti i anything. But couldn't you just connect it to a computer, check to be sure the songs ARE actually there, move them to the computer hard drive (so you have them backed up) and then work out the problem from there?

They even have free wifi at Jiffy Lube!! It's everywhere!!!
Also they have separate chargers with speakers. Invest in those! I don't use itunes and never hook my ipod to a computer anynore. Auto synch is bad!

Sup, if your iTunes is 7.1 eek just as a precaution, I'd back it up / copy my Itunes to an external hard drive. Even if you have to borrow someone elses HD to save a copy temporally . . . just a precaution for what if. I've known some that have had issues upgrading to iTunes 10.

Potential home buyer says to Realtor, "Are there any Mickey D's , Starbucks, or Jiffy Lubes near by? This would be a BIG plus in whether I purchase a home." biggrin
