Stewardess Fired For Having Short Haircut

This is one out of the category: GTFOOH

I only have information from a news web site, so I can't guarantee that the info is correct or complete, but here is a summary of the news article:

A stewardess working for the French/Dutch airliner AirFrance/KLM was fired because her hair cut was considered too short. With a length of less than 1 centimeter AirFrance/KLM deemed the haircut to be "extravagant" which is in violation with the airliner's dress code. According to the stewardess however, she has had short hair since she started working for KLM in 1998 and she never got any complaints, but rather compliments. That is, untill at some point the dress code was updated to include "extravagant hair cuts", after which a colleague filed a complaint in 2005. According to the stewardess her boss after that still did not object to it, untill 2007. Between 2007 and 2010 she received three official warnings. She then offered to wear a wig but the airliner declined. June this year she was taken off a flight, got suspended and later fired because of a disrupted relationship. The stewardess went to court but lost. The Justice of the Peace in Haarlem, the Netherlands ruled in favour of the employer that "females practically shaving their heads bold is socially not generally accepted".

The stewardess feels discriminated against, but by Dutch law cannot appeal the decision.

AirFrance/KLM declined to comment on the case.

Personally I think there is something more going on here, because these kind of stories usually never end up in the news and I know the judge in question wouldn't rule like that solely based on what is deemed socially generally acceptable.

There has to be more to it. Flight attendants are union. The article says nothing about her representation.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

She is not an American stewardess. Her representation wouldn't matter anything in the Netherlands.

What would matter is how she acted herself.

We just flew KLM (Delta), I must say, they had some of the homeliest, casually dressed attendants.

Grumpy and unfriendly. They need to sort that shit out before worrying about the length of their hair. Just sayin!

Wow, what a fucked up thing. I´m actually fed up with how much importance society places on hair...whether it´s that awful headscarves topic, or black women and straightened hair,or long hair after 35, or supposedly hornier redheads, or dumb blondes...or baldheaded women...or women with very short hair. It´s all so ridiculous considering that we´re living in the 21st century.

Sooo...KLM doesn´t like short hair? They should rather worry about those silly looking red hats that their stewardesses on their Martinair division have to wear...everytime I flew to Costa Rica, I kinda felt sorry for those poor women with their little pimp hats.

Not that they are that ugly, but come on, it´s a long distance flight. lol

I think in this day and age women should do whatever they want with their hair and not bow down to any rules or expectations of men.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Nope. I mean stewardesses and I mean hot, like when I was a kid and would be all excited to see them whenever I took a flight. If I'm on a plane and it's going down I don't want the last person who gave me a coke and a shitty sammich I had to pay extra for be a grumpy lookin grandma/grandpa who barely fits down the aisle. biggrin

I was NOT impressed with the Delta/KLM staff. Grumpy group of ppl. I do not care what they look like but don't have an attitude.Though they were so casually dressed, I had a hard time telling who was staff.

OK, the court in Haarlem put its own summary of the case on the web and yes there was more going on than the news article made it seem (no surprise there)

The ruling basically goes like this:

The starting point is that an employer is allowed to set rules on the physical appearance of its employees. Cabin crew members with visible piercings, tatoos and extremely short hair do not fit in with the company image that KLM desires to have with the public. Such an appearance is therefore prohibited by the company. While doing so the employer does infringe on the right of an employee to choose his or her own appearance. However, in this case such an infringement is not unreasonable, because women with practically bold shaven heads are not yet that socially accepted or common that such a hair cut cannot be considered extravagant.

According to the judge, somebody who chooses to become a stewardess accepts that during the performance of their job strict requirements are set on physical appearance. The stewardess in this case basically also accepted these requirements, after she received the warnings, because each time she promised that she would follow the rules, especially that her hair would be at least 1 centimeter long. By cutting her hair again and again so short that it would lead to discussion, the stewardess has violated the trust of KLM in such a manner that a fruitful collaboration is no longer possible.

The regrets and excuses the stewardess has expressed cannot alter this fact, nor her overall good job performance. This is a matter of violating the rules in which KLM has shown patience long enough and has given the stewardess ample of opportunity to improve her behaviour.

confuse But she offered to wear a wig and they still fired her. So being practically bald is not socially acceptable for a woman and wearing a wig isn't socially acceptable either? What if she was a chemo patient? Wonder if the near baldness would be okay then.

I'm guessing she wasn't otherwise pretty enough or enhancing enough body parts to stimulate **cough** passengers. confused
