NBA: David Stern to Players - "I Must Break You"

And he'll win too. The NBA Players Union is a joke compared to MLB.

I put a lot of this on Stern. Expansion has killed the league. Sorry Raptor fans, but the NBA had no business going into Canada. I'd get rid of 6-8 teams to start.

Query:

could contraction work for both sides? That is, could contraction keep quality players paid well, while ridding rosters of overpaid pine riders?

Many of the players from the teams that will fold will be in demand if not highly sought after. Which means surviving teams will need to choose other players to cut?

Maybe?

I'd eliminate these teams - Clippers, Raptors, Grizzlies, Bobcats, Hornets, T'Wolves.

Why the NBA put a team BACK in Charlotte is beyond me. David Stern is a joke. Overrated commissioner. He was lucky to ride Magic, Larry & Michael's coattails. But what exactly has he done for the league?

While he does have good business acumen, Stern acts like he created basketball and the NBA!

He had just a little help in marketing with guys like Jordan, Byrd, Magic, etc so he shouldn't pat himself on the back so much for being a brilliant marketer.

His whole "do it my way or the highway" attitude is fucked up.

I remember a few years ago when the NBA got a new ball without even consulting or checking with players.

The ball was horrible by all accounts and they had to go back to the ball they've always used.

Typical of his arrogance.

If players saved more their money they could wait it out if there was a strike but their over head is too big and the players union(Bily Hunter is a joke) will give in when it's all said and done.

What I hate is that players are made to look like greedy, bad guys because the salaries are public.

Go see the movie Inside Job! THAT is greed!

Quit a bit actually.

The NBA has gone global under his leadership. That is a FACT!

But remember, it was David Stern and the league that embraced the hip-hop culture at first. Then he backed away once it became an embarrassment and a turnoff for sponsors/suburban fans.

6 to 8 teams is too many. I would get rid only these 4 teams:

Los Angeles Clippers

Memphis Grizzles

Toronto Raptors (Basketball in ice hockey country really is pointless!)

Washington Wizards

Because the NBA knew the good people of Charlotte got screwed badly when the Hornets' team owner wanted out of their city without giving the fans OR the city/state government a fair opportunity to figure out what was needed to keep the Hornets in Charlotte (HINT: New arena). Remember, that entire Mid-Atlantic region counts as a good market, not just North Carolina alone.

And BTW, getting rid of the Bobcats is NOT a good idea for the time being. The NBA needs to give the league's only black team owner (Michael Jordan) more time to improve the Bobcats' roster. Beside, they just made the playoff for the first time ever last season.

I don't know what basketball's overall situation is like, because personally I have lost interest in the game. I don't know exactly why, it used to be my favorite sport.

I think maybe the players' personalities have overshadowed the game.

The Association has been defined by its brands. And for 2 decades, those brands were the Lakers, the Celtics, and Michael Jordan. That's one part tradition plus two "perfect storm" moments (Magic and Larry acquired by Lakers and C's & Michael Jordan). Stern smartly leveraged those brands into huge TV revenues. The dominant teams since then, the 00's Lakers and 99-00's Spurs, never had the star power to draw a larger audience. The Hip-Hop Experiment failed.

But it's going to be really hard for Stern to break the league at this point, because ratings are going to go through the roof. The NBA's enjoyed an NFL-type year where it's drawn attention the whole year. LBJ Drama, Lakers-C's, The Decision, now The Threeat. The storylines are going to sell more tickets, and you'd think earn teams more. Will Stern be able to play the austerity angle? Who knows?

But only the most die-hard Association fans will be excited for Opening Night of such a long season, especially in the middle of football season. But Heat @ C's is the story of the day. It's gonna be a great year to watch. Let's see if the league and PA screw it up.

I don't see it. They don't have the clout MLB Player's Association has.

True. But Stern wants to cut players' salaries by nearly 40% by some accounts. They'll make things difficult and use the success of this year as leverage.

I don't have a source to quote at the moment (I'll look for one), but I'm pretty sure those are not the six teams with the least attendance or the most debt. Contraction would be EXTREMELY messy, and the players REALLY don't want it (and it doesn't even take into account things like there needing to be a team back in Seattle). It's much more likely that Stern will get the reduction in player salary that he wants.

Anyway, NBA tonight, woohoo! So happy I'll have games to watch every night. I'm like drool

Expansion has diluted the talent pool and quality of the product!

I totally disagree. In fact, the game has grown so much all around the world that there are now too many talented players. There has always been great teams, average teams and basement dwellers, no matter the size of the league. The difference is that modern media and 24 hour a day sports coverage allows all of them to be seen and then disected on every level. If salaries were lower more players would get a chance to exhibit their talents (a lot of teams don't keep a full 15 player roster under contract). I'll say it again, the players do not want contraction. Fewer jobs overall (6 teams would be a max of 80 jobs, 8 teams 110, even 4 teams would be 60 fewer) is the last thing they want.
