M. Night Shyamalan Developing Sci-Fi Film

October 2010

M. Night Shyamalan is in Hollywood this week putting together his next directorial effort which will see him working with Will Smith.

But it won't be the secret untitled project he shopped around in June. That script, which came with Bruce Willis, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow loosely attached, never found a buyer and was quietly shelved.

That's not to say Shyamalan has lost his love for secrecy -- sources are saying Shyamalan is developing an ultra clandestine sci-fi project titled One Thousand A. E. at Smith's Overbrook production company.

It would star Smith's son, Jaden, who headlined the hit remake of Karate Kid. There is a key role for a male adult, although sources said Will Smith is not taking it on.

As was also the case with recent film The Last Airbender, Shyamalan did not write A.E. That honor goes to Gary Whitta, who wrote The Book of Eli and a Kurt Russell project in development called Undying.

A.E. has no studio home yet although Overbrook has a first-look deal with Sony, which will likely be its home.

lol He is stepping into some baaaaad territory. The sci-fi geeks are gonna tear his ass UP if he screws this up. And I'm the offspring of a Trekkie...soooo...yeah... eek We go HARD, baby. There's so much more to sci-fi than the Trek, but fans of all walks of scientific life will be watching.

I'm certainly not a violent person. I don't even like swinging my legs when I walk. But I wanted to punch that silly cunt in the throat after watching Lady In The Water.

Let's hope it better thought through than Signs...where a bunch if intelligent lifeforms who have a serious H2O allergy invade a planet made up of 70% water and wonder why it all goes tits up.

The only thing that avoids water more is Mel Gibson himself

I liked Unbreakable.

And I actually liked The 6th Sense a little less after seeing Jacob's Ladder years later. Felt like the whole "OMG he wuz dead" thing was sort of borrowed from that, with a few tweaks.

I somehow miss the "quality" of the early films of Shymy: The 6th Sense was a warm/scary/interesting film, Unbreakable was uneven but captivating, and Signs was pretty cool (the ending disappointed me, though). After that it all went downhill: The Village was insulting and silly as hell (I admit that it had a couple of truly scary sequences, though), and everything he has done after the Village stinks...neutral completely bad, completely boring, completely uninteresting...

The only one I hated is "The Happening"

I liked all his other films, and regradless, he has a very unique style of blocking/shooting/pacing.

Of course, I haven't seen his latest "The Last Airbender"

I can see how people thought The Village felt incomplete... but for whatever reason, I was satisfied. The only part I hated in that movie was the switch to slow motion when the guy rescues the blind girl from the approaching monster as she stands in the doorway.

I liked "Signs", "Unbreakable" and, ultimately, "The Sixth Sense". I remember my wife and I rented "The Sixth Sense" and it was so boring that we turned it off at the point where the teenage ghost with the blown-off head asked the kid if he wanted to see a really cool gun. I can't stand it when kids die.

But the word-of-mouth was such that we finished the movie the next day and I'm glad we did, as it got much better.

"The Village" was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I found nothing redeeming at all in that movie. I wanted my money back.

That's the problem - THERE WAS NO MONSTER. When that movie ended, I got up and shouted, "Is that all? Where the hell are the monsters?!?!?" because the movie was promoted as a MONSTER movie.

Boy, if I'd had some tomatoes, I definitely would have chunked them at the screen.

Don't go see the horribly mismarketed "Catfish". It's a great movie, but it's not a thriller like the advertising people spin it.

Other than the 6th Sense (which was really good) his movies have a great setup, and terrible follow-through.

That said they are just interesting enough that I keep renting them.
