It's true, Lisa. I do that deliberately, but every intelligent being in this universe (exluding most Americans, obviously) could tell that I'm not too serious about my generalisations.
I've got friends from the U.S. who are perfectly fine. They are Americans, of course, which is a shame, but I do get along with them!

Both cars I've owned were sticks. I learned on my first car by having the salesguy take me around the block and then I drove my ass home. I did great that first night then proceeded to stall at every light and stop sign for the next week. I mastered a stick soon enough and have been driving one for the last 17 years. I HATE clutchless manual transmissions and that most high-end cars have paddle shifters and no clutch. |

I don't own a car, but I can drive both. I grew up on a farm, most of our older tractors are manual. My car was actually an automatic, but I asked my dad to teach me to drive manual in high school, using his pick-up. I'm not great at it (especially if I have to start on an incline) but I can drive manual if necessary -- it came in handy when I lived in Chicago. My ex- bought a 5-speed Audi TT convertible and didn't know how to drive stick; the first night we took it out he kept killing in on major thoroughfares so I convinced him to let me drive it home. OMG, it was fun driving that car. He burned out the clutch in 2 days.
If I lived in a rural area and had a car, I might consider having a manual transmission; but there is no way I would buy one if I lived in a city. I hate driving the way it is - I don't need the added stress of shifting!

2 DAYS?!?!? Dayum! Po puppy. I never understood folk who bought their first cars with sticks and didn't know diddly about how to drive them! I had two friendsgirl (Judge Joe Brown's word ) who did that. I had to teach both of them how to drive their cars.
One of them was stopped on an incline on a busy DC street and kept stalling when she tried to accelerate. She didn't understand why, and traffic was piling up behind her. Finally she said a man approached her and saw what the problem was and told her to get out of the driver seat and he would get the car to level ground.
My first week was hell but I didn't have a choice but to figure that shit out. I was ok on hills but getting out of first without stalling was a bitch! I was the queen of rolling through stop signs until I got two tickets in the first week. |

Oh okay. Now what's your strategy when it comes to going up or down hills? I know this is the one thing that many people have different methods and views on in handling when it comes to driving a manual transmission.
That takes agility and coordination! When I drove my stick, while stopped on an incline, I could keep my car at a standstill with just the clutch and accelerator, but that's not a good practice. When at a stop on an incline, keep the gear in neutral and your foot on the brake. When it's time to accelerate, one must be quick and coordinated in order to prevent backsliding, especially if there's an asshole right on your tailgate!
I always roll back to let them bitches know to get of my ass. |

I prefer automatic of course, like most people do. To shift manually can be fun for short periods of time when you drive powerful cars but in the long run an automatic gearbox is bliss. It allows you to relax and focus on other things and it frees up an arm and a leg, so what's not to love?
I do ALL that with a stick. |

Well what I meant was of course that it frees up an arm and a leg compared to when you drive with manual transmission. No arm has to work the stick and no leg has to work the clutch, and that's much more comfortable. And yes, although driving manual can be relaxing too it's not nearly as relaxing as driving automatic.

You're right, I guess you can call it more relaxing but I know for me it's just second nature, I don't even notice that I'm shifting or working the clutch. |

I don't mind driving manual. Like I said it can even be fun occasionally. And when I drive manual it's like you describe, almost second nature. But then when I switch to automatic it's like when an annoying sound that I've grown accustomed to and tuned out suddenly actually goes quiet. I didn't know what sweet silence I was missing out on! lol
Did you sell your motorcycle or are you still cruising around on it?
