Anyone here practice yoga?

I am starting a Kundalini yoga class today.

Any pointers for a beginner?

I’ve been out of practice for several months, but I am starting back up very soon.

For your first class – don’t get frustrated. One of the great things about yoga is there are lots of different ways to do a pose, depending on your current flexibility. If the teacher is any good s/he will help you modify positions to the “easiest” level you require.

I have said many times, my body never feels better, and I never feel beter about my body, than after a yoga session. cloud9

I used to.

The best thing about yoga is you get into it really quickly. At first it seems impossible but give it 2 weeks and you can do it easily and see real improvements.

I need to get back into it.

I used to do a beginning yoga class. It was very easy and often just felt like stretching. I loved it. I haven't done it in years, though.

I think you'll enjoy it!

I've read somewhere that there are certain ways that you have to do some of the postures.

I tried it a little but probably should work on being a little more disciplined, there were a few of the poses that I thought I could benefit from.

Although I don't do the meditation part, just the parts where I can benefit physically.

I think I went to an advance class of Yoga once. I mean they wanted me touch my toes!?

That's the best part!!! All of the physical stuff is a warm-up to the meditation. That's like ordering a piece of pie and only eating the crust - deciding not to eat the gooey yummy filling.

I've been doing a form of Bikram yoga which is much more physically challenging than strictly meditative forms of yoga for about 8 years. I love what it does for my mind AND body. Any type you do on any level will be extremely beneficial. Good luck, mama! pray

It's not about flexibility but as your mind opens your body will follow. At some point you may want to consider Bikram or "hot" yoga. The heat will definitely help your muscles' flexibility and you'll be amazed at the changes.

Don't worry about being too stiff, just take your time with it. It's all in the breathing - and anyone can do that! Finding the right tutor is important though, make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed at all times. And enjoy it! wink

You'll loosen up! I LOVE yoga, but the instructor at my gym only does morning classes now sad

I noticed my muscles were less tight in the morning when I was doing it 3 times a week though, so I'm going to try and find another place that offers cheap classes.

There are lots of DVDs, online tutorials and guided shows on cable channels like fitTV. They're even sometimes on PBS. Chris saved a bunch for me and burned them to DVD.

It's awesome for anyone with joint problems because it's so low-impact, and like others have said, all the poses can be adjusted to your comfort level.

It's what you make it.

yeahthat nod I took free classes at a community college almost two decades ago (during the hippie years) and have been learning on my own ever since. What I do now is kind of a mix of yoga, basic sports stretches and a bit of pilates (but I didn't know that until somebody told me it was lol ). Classes are good for some people, though, because it keeps them working on it. Breathing is really what's most important, though, imo. No matter how good you get at stretching and learning poses if you can't center yourself and breathe properly you aren't getting the most out of it. ...oh... and opposites... so maybe just keep taking classes. lol

Yesterday was the first day. It kicked my ass. dead

I loved it though. I loved how I had to concentrate on what I was doing so no outside thoughts entered my head.

Hello.

I did Kundalini Yoga with a home DVD earlier in the year by Maya Fiennes, it is brilliant. Going to start doing it again soon.

The benefits I felt really quickly were increased flexibility, toned stomach & an abilityto relax quicker. I think these benefits are really just the start of the journey with yoga.

I did Kundalini yoga for a while.

It's a very powerful form of yoga.
