The Movie Gladiator

I swear this is one of the best movies in my lifetime. I'm 40 years of age. I would say that Malcolm X, the Color Purple, and Gladiator are the best movies EVER.

Will there be anymore? Seems like cinema is suffering just as music is. It took me years and years and years to realize that the Cesar was Joquin Phonix (spelling) that's how good of a damned actor he is. Russel Crow was sexy as hell, and he's not even my type of guy. That movie was just awesomely made from beginning to end. Had a damned good plot, great action, and was realistic.

I want to put "The Last Samuri" in there too, but there's just something holding me back from doing so, perhaps it's the "scientology" thing (just playin), no but something prevented that flick from being a Number One....it kinda got a bit long winded at some parts, but I did enjoy it.

Since "we" org members come from all ages and walks of life, name your top 3 greatest movies of all times. (Got a feeling I'm going to get a lot of Star Treks and Star Wars, not that they were bad but I just got a feeling).

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

How could I forget "Roots" but that counts as a "mini-series" I guess. Awesome, should be mandatory educational viewing across the United States.

I totally agree.

I am 45 now , and Gladiator is one of those rare movies - if it is ON TV ... i cant stop watching it (yeah yeah even with commercials and I own it on dvd etc . I am weird in that way)

I would say Godfather and Godfather 2 is similar for me . That is it .... that I can think of . The Star Wars and such just lose it (for me )- - altho I loved them when they came out - - - they just dont have the staying power of Gladiator , and the Godfather flicks ...

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

It is a good one. It has some of my favorite elements in a movie,. A reluctant bad ass with nothing to lose, a vile villain, betrayal, and a nice montage.

I need to see it, because last night I tried to watch "Tropic Thunder" and only made it half way through.

And the funny thing is, the first 15 minutes were freaking hilarious. But after the director got his head blown off, that movie lost all its steam.

It didn't help that I couldn't understand most of what Robert Downey, Jr. was saying.

So "Gladiator", here I come.

I was a bit underwhelmed when I watched it and can´t really understand why people love it so much.

Sure, it´s a decent movie but nothing special.Everything that´s good about it has been done before, but much better, and just like you, I´m not really into Russel Crowe...maybe he´s a nice guy as a person but as a celebrity, he comes across like a self obsessed, moody and aggressive asshole. But hey, maybe I´d have a great time with him if we had a couple of beers, I don´t want to judge him.

He´s a decent actor and I liked him very much in American Gangster with Denzel Washington.

Some of my favorite movies are, in no particular order:

And another Sener Sen movie..... lol :

And of course:

[img:$uid]http://sectionfriendly.com/assets/uploads//image/img_3395_godfather.jpg[/img:$uid]

And yes, I like ALL parts of it, including part III. wink

I will always love this:

[img:$uid]http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/12/A70-6152[/img:$uid]

...and I think this here comes pretty close because it deals with getting older, loss, sadness, friendship, loyalty, love....and so much more:

[img:$uid]http://www.nonstop-lieferbar.de/shop_img/DVD_2008_08_31_23_32_42_Rocky%20Balboa.jpg[/img:$uid]

I´m not really into Billy Crystal, but surprisingly, Analyze This and Analyze That AND THIS MOVIE are among my favorite films:

[img:$uid]http://www.pineapple.com.hk/blog/ignatius/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/movie-when-harry-met-sally11.jpg[/img:$uid]

I´ve never been a huge Woody Allen fan but his latest films are among my recent favorites. This one in particular is a film that I´ve been watching repeatedly in the past couple of months...actually eversince it came out on DVD.....exactly what I need on a cold, rainy day:

[img:$uid]http://urech.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/vicky-cristina-barcelona-inv.jpg[/img:$uid]

Makes you fall in love with Spain, Catalonia and everything that comes with it...a great film...highly recommended.

And probably a dozen more.....

Ferris Bueller edit.

Ohhhh.....sorry Reel....I totally forgot that you said "3" greatest movies. lol

Naming just three is impossible anyway.

But...Gladiator is definitely NOT among my favorite movies, let alone favorie three.

Have you ever watched Conan the Barbarian? The first part? Uncensored? Now THAT is a great movie for anyone who is into The Gladiator. A lot of people automatically dislike it because Arnold is in it and because John Milius directed it, and some say it´s borderline fascist and strays too far from the original Conan novels and comic books but hey, it is nevertheless a great and very underrated movie. The second part sucked though.

And James Earl Jones was great in it.

Do you like any of the movies that I listed?

Oh really? The one that is also on the special edition DVD? Or is there another one out now?

The one on the DVD is already great as it is but I´d love to watch the one you saw...do you know its name? Have to look for it if it´s not the same that I already watched.

Go get the special edition DVD....it´s really worth it.

Did you know that they accidentally really cut off "Valeria"´s finger during the sword fight?

That movie and Mad Max 2 have some of the best action scenes EVER.

It was actually on youtube. It contained the bit about Valeria severing her finger. Youch.

This is the first of five videos.

I enjoyed "A Bronx Tale". The other movies that you listed were kinda American Cult Classics such as Rocky, Star Wars. As far a Conan, I did not keep up with the comic books, I was young when it came out, and I had no negative pre-conceived notion about Arnold but...even at that time in my life, I thought it was a bit "cheesy". Just my opinion.biggrin

I like Gladiator but it is nothing compared to those classics such as The Robe, Ben Hur, Spartacus and Quo Vadis (my personal fav) as far as ancient Rome flicks go.

I'm glad my parents introduced me to those old flicks cuz I wouldn't have been able to appreciate Gladiator if I hadn't seen those others. Joaquin should have won best supporting actor. He was clearly robbed.

The movies that you named are classic. Feel so bad that I've only seen small parts of Ben Hur (but I really was into it, just havent caught it on TV in it's entirety again. That movie looked very well made and complete also. Of course I want to see Spartacus "I am Spartacus...I am Spartacus"... Haven't heard of "The Robe" though.

Oh you've got to see The Robe. Victor Mature is brilliant and sexy and the dude that plays the crazy ass ceasar is too much. I can't recollect his name but he puts on quite a show. It's too much I swear. You will be glad you've seen it I promise.

Totally agree, the Novel should be mandatory reading as well...It hit me harder than the film. I'm all sitting there on the underground crying while reading it.
