Where in the broadcast did it say that the bride was kidnapped and raped? Someone help me out here, because I didn't hear that anywhere in the video. |

They mention he was alleged to have kidnapped her four years ago. There was no mention of rape. |

and she was like... You're mine now!
She did say she finally got "justice". Her and her mom acted like they won the lottery. Saying you'll go out with a man in India means he must marry you or something? If he says no he's a criminal? What a fucked up place to date.
It's a different culture dseann. In Eastern countries, a woman's honour is especially prized. By honour, they mean her reputation as a chaste, virtuous woman. The men have to have a good reputation too. And a good career and come from a good family. Although most of the premium is put on the woman's virginity, not the man's. A woman is expected to be a virgin till her wedding night. In terms of "dating", there isn't such a thing. They have "courting"....meaning you have chaperoned outings and get togethers with your future husband/wife. Pretty much, you're seen in public and it's understood you're engaged. If a woman loses her virginity prior to marriage and she was not married beforehand, it's considered dishonourable to both her and her family. It's a flawed system because of the double standard. I never approved of many aspects of it.
Personally, I think that bride deserved better. If he kidnapped her like they say, God knows what he did to her! I know in some cultures, the penalty for rape is death. I hope he pays for what he did. Getting married should be the least of his problems. [Edited 8/24/10 19:17pm] |

I think the enterpretation of "kidnapping" is being flung around a little too loosely in this scenario. My question is, doesn't the man in this culture get to change his mind? What if they did have sex on the night she was "kidnapped" and he wasn't impressed? In his position, I think I'd run away too. |
