So when is Angela going to get another role already?!?

I loved her in "The Jacksons: An American Dream", "What's Love Got To Do With It", and "Vampire In Brooklyn". As for "Waiting To Exhale", that was one of those boring ass "chick flicks" that I've never liked, especially one starring Shitney Houston....although I did watch "The Bodyguard" and enjoyed it because I kept rooting for the killer. WTE used to be one of my fave films, but it turned to be a revolting watch nowadays.
Everytime I see a show or a film where there's a constant lament about not having or keeping a "man", I turn *click*
Not a feminist by a long walk, but that passe shit infuriates me. It just tells me that no matter WHAT substantial thing you do in your life, it ceases to define you until you have a permanent penis in your house,,,,it doesn't even matter if that penis belongs to a deadbeat or a good man.
Nothing wrong with sharing your life with a significant other, but speaking personally(and I'm married), I didn't look for somebody else to "complete me", I was already a satisfied person,,,,but when I see movies like that one nowadays, I can't help but to read the "No matter what you've done in your life, you ain't shit without a man" tag and I hate how many women fall for it. Its SO not true, and hopefully Terry McMillan learned something when she tasted her own nasty medicine. [Edited 8/20/10 13:21pm]

:clapping: Amen dammitt!!!!!!
A man ain't shit to me but a motherfucking dick and once I've had it, if his ass wants to move on, that's fine with me because it's never as good as the first time. And I'm tired of motherfuckers thinking you better watch what you say to them because they're giving up that dick and will take it back. I've got one right now that I am damn sick of. I wish I knew his damn girlfriend's number because I'd call that bitch up and tell her to keep that bastard with her and don't be dumping her problem on me. Come get his ass. . . . Angela Bassett...what can I say but love her, love her, LOVE HER!!!!
The first time I ever saw her was on a tv show called "Spencer For Hire". Later she was on the spinoff of that show, the short lived "A Man Called Hawk" which starred Avery Brooks who played Hawk on "Spencer For Hire". I was only about 15 at the time but I knew there was something special about her. There's a regal quality in her that cannot be denied.
Fast forward a few years and there she was as the ex-wife of the man who soon help make her a household name in "Boyz In The Hood". The man of course, was Lawrence Fishburne.
In 1992, her regal grace as was personified when she played Dr. Betty Shabazz in the movie "X" about the life and murder of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, otherwise known as Malcolm X. Her performance made me weep. Still does to this day!
Then came 1993 and Angela Bassett, gave a phenominal portrayal of none other than Ms. Tina Motherfucking Turner!!! Nobody and I do mean NOBODY could have pulled that off the way that she did. Whenever, I watch that movie and I do, every single time I see it on. I don't see Lawrence and Angela. I see Ike and Tina! Hell, it took me some years to start liking Lawrence again because they played those roles just a little too damn well!
From then on, she could do no wrong in my eyes. I simply just love her!!!
There is only one photo of her on this thread. That just won't do!
I forgot to mention that I think she has the 3rd most beautiful smile, I have ever seen! Number 1 and number 2 are Michael's and Janet's, respectively! .

I always thought WTE's plot was pointless myself. The only fun bits was Angela's throwdown in one scene, her slapping the hell out of that heifer in another, Lela's scolding on Bubba ( [Edited 8/20/10 19:44pm]

I don't see it either lol [Edited 8/20/10 19:49pm]

Granted, its still a VERY enjoyable performance by everybody(except Nippy & Lela). I enjoyed everything, until Nippy opens her piehole and says "None of us have a man, thats some sad shit"

I agree. ROBBED!!!!
I also love Lynn Whitfield and think she should have gotten more recognition for playing Josephine Baker. "Let love be your perfect weapon..." ~~Andy Biersack

I dunno...I thought she was FAAAAAAAAAAB but The Piano was the SHIT acting-wise. That was a tough call.
Lynn Whitfield did get recognition for the Josephine Baker Story. Didn't she win an emmy?? [Edited 8/20/10 20:35pm]

And she was one to talk sucking on crack pipes.
I sometimes wished Angela had wring her neck.

She almost had, those two did not get along. Thankfully, Forrest had the hang of it.

Yes, she did. Lynn should have had more important and high profile roles after that. Same for Angela. "Let love be your perfect weapon..." ~~Andy Biersack

Should've put it in the script.
I remember that shady comment Whitney made to a press junket about if Whitney had any tension with Angela, Lela and Loretta and she was all "there was something that we dealt with in our own time". It almost sounded like she wanted to tell folks to mind their business but her look speculated that she couldn't stand none of them lol

Lynn and Angela were both mismanaged, they should've been bigger than what they were.

Its the same ordeal with black actresses since Nina Mae McKinney; its always ONE break through role and then 1/2 assed supporting roles.
I absolutely love love LOVE Lynn Whitfield, she and Debbi Morgan did the BEST song & dance together when they acted in Eve's Bayou, I know the lil' girl was the focal point of the story but she didn't had a chance between those two dames

Hell yeah! Angela was ROBBED!!!! Holly Hunter won that year for The Piano.
Anyhoo, Bitches! I've met, hugged and had a conversation with Lynn Whitfield! I actually got to tell her how much I loved her in the Josephine Baker Story.
She was in Detroit, at Wayne State University to promote the made for TV movie, Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story, that she starred in with Jamie Foxx.
I was there to video tape the event, at the request of Congressman John Conyers, so I had All Access.
I've got a picture and video of our meeting, too! It's somewhere in my archives, when and if I can find it, I'll post it. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

She is,,,,,well, not exactly, but she came from a VERY upscale family from Louisiana.
Its not only her though, something in common about the women I met who came from the black middle class(of her generation that is) screams "regal". Attitude to break a law or two, and I don't even think they were taught that way, its like it was instilled in them from the womb.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah they're both regal.
