Mitrice Richardson's Remains Found

All those supposed sightings here in Vegas were just rumors afterall. The LA sherrifs found her remains the other day and it was just confirmed. That's a damn shame, 2 miles from the sherrif station that originally arrested her that night. Lawsuit, anyone?

Mitrice Richardson may have been spotted in Las Vegas

Her father and a friend report sightings. The woman, now 25, has been missing since Sept. 16, when she vanished after she was released from the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station late at night.

July 29, 2010|By Carla Hall and Joel Rubin, Los Angeles Times

Mitrice Richardson, who vanished after being released from an L.A. County sheriff's station early one September morning last year, may be alive and living in Las Vegas, according to law enforcement officials.

On Thursday, at a news conference in that city, they will make a public plea for her to come forward.

"Please let us know you're OK," Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, said of their message to Richardson. "You're not in trouble. You've done nothing wrong. You are not the subject of a criminal investigation. You will not be arrested."

A friend from Richardson's teenage years said he saw her in a bar at the Rio on Father's Day weekend in June, prompting a search by L.A. County sheriff's investigators. Her father, Michael Richardson, said a Sheriff's Department official told him that they had information on numerous sightings.

Whitmore wouldn't give a number, but said, "They wouldn't be doing this if they didn't believe they had credible information of her whereabouts. They want to prove or disprove beyond a shadow of a doubt that these sightings are indeed fact or indeed not fact."

So far, authorities have neither located her nor established for sure that it was Richardson who was spotted — and not simply a woman who resembles her.

"Absolutely possible," Whitmore said of the latter scenario.

Also working on the case, and to be represented at the news conference, he said, are Los Angeles police — the lead investigators in the disappearance for months — and Las Vegas police. "They want to make it definitive," Whitmore said.

Nothing has been definitive since Richardson —a Cal State Fullerton graduate whose 25th birthday was in April — showed up at Geoffrey's restaurant in Malibu last Sept. 16, acting bizarrely and speaking in gibberish. Unable to pay her $89 dinner bill, she was arrested and taken into custody.

Shortly after midnight, she was released from the Lost Hills/Malibu sheriff's station in Calabasas without her car, which had been impounded, or her cellphone and purse, which were in the car. Several months later, police investigators discovered evidence in her diaries that she was probably suffering from severe bipolar disorder.

As the L.A. County Coroner's Office tries to identify skeletal remains...yon ravine, the parents of Mitrice Richardson said they are praying that the body is not their daughter's.

Richardson vanished after being released from the Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff's Station last September.

"No one wants her home more than me," said Latice Sutton, Richardson's mother, at a news conference Tuesday evening.

"Nothing has been concluded," father Michael Richardson said on KJLH-FM. "We're going to remain hopeful, prayerful and steadfast."

A law enforcement source said Tuesday that the remains appear to be that of a woman and that women's clothing was found at the scene.

Although family and friends of the missing woman — whose 25th birthday was in April — gathered on a grassy trail Monday not far from where the remains were found, they weren't the only ones searching for answers. The wife of a hiker missing for several years also had come to Malibu, wondering if it was her husband's body that had been found.

"I've got two families, both missing a loved one up in the area," said Ed Winter, spokesman for the county coroner's office on Tuesday morning before a preliminary examination of the remains. "And it could be a third person."

Tuesday evening, Sutton held a news conference outside the coroner's office, saying that officials had confirmed that women's clothing, specifically a pair of Levis, was found at the scene.

"It is unfortunate that they will not let me view those articles of clothing," she said, adding that her daughter was wearing jeans the night she was arrested. She said she was making a personal plea to the coroner to let her see the clothes.

Richardson was arrested at Geoffrey's restaurant in Malibu after acting bizarrely and saying she was unable to pay her $89 dinner tab. She was released from custody shortly after midnight without her car — which had been impounded — or a cellphone or purse. Investigators believe she was spotted three times in the canyon area in daylight hours that morning. After that, she was never heard from again.

The remains — which include a skull — were found about 2 1/2 miles from the last credible sighting of her on Sept. 17. The discovery casts an ominous shadow over the case of the missing woman.

The police fucked up by releasing her to begin with. According to the restaurant episode she had, she clearly wasn't stable enough to be released on her own.

And I now wonder how the restaraunt owner feels? 90 bucks for this woman's life?

This whole thing doesn't make sense. Now, keep in mind, I am a connosseuir of true crime stories and I paid double attention to this one, because the girl is black-and what is unusual for a case involving a missing black woman, this case got a fair amount of press-and also the very ODD circumstances surrounding it. Now I live in LA and I can tell you that black people in Malibu are not a common sight. Malibu is a pricey, pricey area, as was the place she was dining at. I am sure the powers that be in that eatery had eagle eyes on her because she was black. Now, I had no idea you could be arrested for not being able to pay a restaurant bill. But that is neither here nor there. What I find odd is how Mitrice was taken to that jail, treated like a felon-had her cell phone, keys etc taken and NOT GIVEN back when she was release. And to top it off, I believe her family said to keep her there until they could get there to come pick her up. Now, I have never heard much about the Malibu force other than Mel Gibson has them in his back pocket as they have covered up quite a few scrapes (and I use that term mildly) that his sons have gotten into. But back to my point. Mitrice was a gorgeous young lady-in jail with police officers and I think she may have been the only prisoner there. It doesn't take a genius to see where I am going with this. Now, IF they did release her and not just dump her body-Malibu is still a sort of undeveloped place in many ways. Buses aren't common there and there are not a lot of streets, per se. Plenty of wildlife and it is rocky, with steep cliffs, canyons. If Mitrice was as disturbed as everyone has claimed, she didn't stand a chance. If the cops didn't kill her or cause her death, then either she fell victim to the wild or else someone she ran into.

My money, though, is on the cops.

Sidenote, in the 70s, Diahann Carroll's husband was found dead in a Malibu Canyon-I believe it was a car crash and I also think there were oddities with his death. He worked at either Jet or Ebony.

Interesting angle. If the sherrifs are involved I hope the family gets every damn dime they're gonna seek.

I went to Bingo last night and sat with a woman who knows someone directly related to this family and she was saying that they think the cops are involved due to the location where this girl was found. That she couldn't have gotten there on her own or without assistance.

An investigation needs to be launched, but I believe that the Malibu police force, like the Santa Monica, Culver City and Burbank forces are funded by the city and are "private". Not sure how that works. How far was the police station from where Mitrice was found?

2 miles. And it was the sherrifs department.
