The Ellen DeGeneres era on American Idol is over.

After deciding Idol "didn't feel like the right fit," the first-year Idol judge and popular talk-show host has decided not to come back for a second season of the top-rated Fox hit. In a statement, she cited time commitments and the discomfort of hurting contestants' feelings.

"It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings," DeGeneres said.

"I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be."

Idol already is searching for a replacement for Simon Cowell, arguably the show's top attraction, on its four-judge panel. No announcement has been made on that front, and Fox did not make any additional comment on whether it would have three or four judges next season. Auditions already have started for Idol's 10th season.

Idol remains TV's top-rated show, with its Tuesday and Wednesday episodes heading the Nielsen charts, but its audience has been slipping in recent years. May's ninth-season finale, which featured the crowning of Lee DeWyze, drew 24.2 million viewers, down from 28.8 million the previous year.

In the statement, DeGeneres said she told producers a couple of months ago of her feelings but that she wouldn't leave them in a bind and would hold off on doing anything until they decided on what they planned to do next.

Idol producers and Fox executives praised DeGeneres, who was halfway through a two-year contract.

"I loved Ellen's passion for the artists and her nurturing skills," Idol creator Simon Fuller says. "She brought honesty and optimism to our judging panel, and I will miss her greatly."

I haven't watched the show in 5 years but news is all over the net.

-Cara(sp?) is being fired

-Jennifer Lopez is on board now

-Steven Tyler from Aerosmith is on board now.

Not sure if it really matters anymore, but this show has been on life support for some time now

Probably got tired of keeping a straight face lol

And Jenny from the block is on a singing committee now? faint

Might as well, if Paula Abdul was a "judge" then cat-in-heat-singing J.Lo is good for the job..

I love Ellen, but there was no room for her on there. It was weird. Kara should have never joined either. They should have ponied up for Paula Abdul, and let it as is. If it ain't broke, don't fucking fix it. The show really should have ended a couple of years ago. Five years total, perhaps. But with Simon leaving, and Ellen (who didn't really boost ratings like folks thought), it's just time to shut the whole thing down. A lot of the tour dates were canceled, too. The tour came to my city, and the folks that saw it, that I talked to, said it was mediocre at best. The whole thing is 99.9999% the anti-thesis of what music is about anyway.

Kara DioGuardi -- Out at ...ican Idol'

Sources connected with the "American Idol" negotiations tell TMZ Kara DioGuardi has judged her last contestant on "American Idol" -- because she's been fired.

0729_kara_diguardi_ex_getty
We're told the show will be going back to a three-judge format and assuming all deals are finalized, the judge's panel will consist of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

We're told the only way Kara could get a reprieve is if the J-Lo deal falls apart -- but we're told that deal is done.

Ellen DeGeneres announced earlier Thursday that she was leaving the show after just one season.

Ellen should've never been on there anyway. She has no musical background, so her comments were without merit. Plus, she just wasn't funny on the show and didn't bring anything to the show at all. They need to go with Lyor Cohen of Def Jam. That dude is Simon 2.0. J-lo's gonna be weak. Tyler's gonna be weak. Al B. Sure! would be a good choice. So would Teena Marie.

Oh well,it's not like she wasn't already making enough money as songwriter and producer. It was good while it lasted, and she's already achieved everything she's wanted for her career, so buh-bye Idol. How long has this thing been on the air, btw? I've heard it's declined in the last few years.

Well, the main idiot judge that is the star of the show and does all the criticizing doesn't have any musical knowledge either. The fool criticized a girl who sang Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" and told her if she was going to do one of Celine Dione's songs, she had better do it like a diva. He even went off a girl that sang Heart's "Magic Man" and told her she should never come on a show singing a song that nobody's ever heard of. And I don't even watch the show. I saw all this on the TV Guide Channel at the top half of the screen while I was checking the TV Listings chart. It's a damn shame when you change the channel to get away from a show and the damn thing is all over the other shows. lol

And wasn't he responsible for The Spice Girls? Well hell, that right there alone takes away all his merit. lol And please don't bring Teena Marie into that trash can of a show. They don't deserve to be in her presence. lol

I only watch the auditions.

I've never liked Simon Cowell. Even if he's right, there's better ways to deliver the message.

I do like Ellen and I believe she's telling the truth about both her schedule and not liking to criticize the contenstants.

I've never liked Kara. She's too full of herself.

I don't mind looking at J-Lo at all.

Steven Tyler can be extremely entertaining, but I've never seen him in this type of situation.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the auditions just as much this season as the previous ones. biggrin

I still won't watch the show beyond that point.

And what's your beef with The Spice Girls anyway. At least most of their hits were way more uptempo than Whitney.
