Ex-Raider Tatum dies

Wow....I saw him play several times in the 70's.

Former Oakland Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum has died.

Tatum, a three-time Pro Bowler, was 61. "We have lost one of our greatest Buckeyes," Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel said in a statement. "When you think of Ohio State defense, the first name that comes to mind is Jack Tatum. His loss touches every era of Ohio State players and fans."

Known as "The Assassin" during his career, Tatum was renowned as one of the most feared hitters in the game. He won a Super Bowl with Oakland in 1976.

He is a member of both the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

He'll always be remembered for the vicious hit on Darryl Stingley that ended Stingley's career.

More info.....

Former Oakland Raiders Star Jack Tatum Dies At 61

Jack Tatum, the Oakland Raiders' "Assassin" whose hard hit in a 1978 preseason game paralyzed wide receiver Darryl Stingley, has died. He was 61.

Tatum died of a heart attack Tuesday in Oakland, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks.

On Aug. 12, 1978, Stingley, playing for the New England Patriots, ran head-on into the hard-hitting Tatum on a crossing pattern. The blow severed Stingley's fourth and fifth veterbrae, effectively turned him into a quadriplegic.

Tatum said he tried to visit Stingley at an Oakland hospital shortly after the collision but was turned away by Stingley's family members.
They are talking about Jack Tatum right now on local Sports talk radio and the theme I keep hearing is that he was such a nice and accommodating man off the field. He was a monster on the field, and played the game 110% at all times. He played brutally, just like everyone did back in the 70's. But from every account I have heard of the man from people who knew or had met him seem to say the same thing about his kindness off the field.

Shit, that how it was back in the day, even during most of the 80s. Now football(basketball too) is a totally different game. You can't touch wide receivers anymore. Makes you appreciate what Jerry Rice was able to do.
