hmmm

1) how do you feel about women in orange string bikinis?

I like the color orange, but not on tan women. I like it on fair skin women. Tan women's skin tends to fight orange for some reason.

Like in this photo:

2) what is a Thai massage exactly? does it involve touching from the groin down to the knee? http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ai_massage

Essentially, it's a type of massage that is similar to the Chinese version (which concentrates on Chi) but is quite different in several ways. The idea is the reset the body's energy zones and get the body back to health. It has a few yoga like stretching positions, which can leave newbies very sore.

Additionally, there are dozens (and dozens and dozens) of massage parlors in Bangkok that offer 'happy' endings. But if you go to a spa or hotel retreat, you get a true Thai massage--not the Susie Wong goes porno version.

3) is the a particular dish I should order when going to an american Thai restaurant to experience the essence of Thai cooking?

hmmm

Thai has several regions, but most Thais will agree that if you have to seperate Thai food into just two types, you could probably say "Bangkok" and "Isan" Thai food. Isan food is spicier and saltier than traditional Thai--I think it's a result of being on the border with Laos and a restriction in materials and finances compared to the wealthier, more international bangkok fare. The Portugese brought chilis to Thailand during the periods of western colonialization of the East and Thai food has never been the same since.

If I could sum up Thai food, it's juxtapositions. A true Thai dish is often the combination of opposing or very different flavors thrown together to form sort of a riotous combination in your tastebuds. Sweet and Spicey are mixed together. Salty and Sour are mixed together. Cilanthro, Tomatoes, Meat and Lime Juice are thrown into a delicious mix (also something you'll find in tradition 'real' mexican fare).

If I had to pick a small set of dishes, I'd say Thai Beef Salad (Yam Neau Nam Tok--literallly means salad beef waterfall), Som Tum (Thai Papaya Salad), and Basil Chicken (because it perfectly mixes the pugeunt nature of holy basil, withe the sweetness of sugar, and spiciness of peppers). Penang is also something you should try----The Thai desert should always involve coconut, bananas or Turian (not often served in the US restaurants).

4) what/how is your relationship with your hairdresser in Thailand?

He understands almost no English, and my Thai is not sufficient to explain what I want just yet. So I just point to pictures on my iPod and he uses that as a template. He's really good at Korean Pop-star hair, and that's a must. I mean, seriously.

5) how is your Aunt doing? do you get to see her and her estate?

I was told she's cruising near Ant Artica right now or something. I have been to busy to go up and see them lately. Plus, I'm not much of a family person anyways.

6) have you gotten a motor scooter yet?

No. There's no real need for one yet, and I have sell my house before I can actually spend money like that. I'm making a fraction of what I was making in the states, but with the same debt. lol

7) are you off for the summer, or is school in session year round?

Summer in Thailand is different than in the USA. The summer (and hottest) months are between late march and may. And yes, I'm off for about 2.5-ish months. But I chose to tutor and teach for much of the summer since that pay is all considered overtime additional pay. Hopefully next year, I'll have 3 months off to just do NOTHING. lol

I gotta go but I'll check in on this thread later. I find this thread absolutely, jaw dropingly fascinating.

If I ever got the vacation time off and was crazy enough to fly out to Bangkok on my own, is it unsafe for a woman to wander around the city during the day? Any idea what a cheap but decent place to stay might run me?

1) what's the music scene like in Thailand? do they know Prince?

It is absolutely dreadful. If it were any worse it would resemble the German pop music scene--a fate worse than death.

2) If one were wearing a string bikini, what spf sunscreen should one wear?

The Thais would probably not wear that. They're very shy about their appearences and behavior in public. Even though the fuck like rabbits and do all sorts of crazy shit when the lights go off.

But if you could get one to dress slutty in public (Even at a pool), they'd just hide under an umbrella, with SPF 50 (including skin bleaching chemicals) along with a large shaw, a stack of magazines to protect the face from stray rays bouncing off shiny surfaces nearby, and a ski-mask just in case any light should hit the skin, lest it start to tan--a fate worse than death.

3) do you feel "home" there?

Yes, I do. But I actually like feeling a bit out of place. That's why I'm thinking of spending maybe a year or two in Korea and Japan before returning to Thailand or Florida. There's something wonderful about waking up in a completely alien place and feeling just a tiny bit overwhelmed. I love it. lol

I have no idea most days.

At this point, I have no interest in being with a man. They're like fussy girls without a vagina to pound anyways.

But ask me in a week and you'll probably get a different assessment.

Are you cute?

Not to steal Dan's shine, but I'll take this one. It's safe for a woman to wander around the city during the day. nod However, you look like sex on a stick and if you get harassed by a pack of tuk-tuk drivers it will be your fault.

A cheap but decent place to stay in Bangkok means anywhere between 500 and 2000 baht a night. That's $15-$60. It depends on where in Bangkok you stay and also what you consider decent. 500 baht can get you a small but clean room with air-conditioning, TV and possibly a fridge. A little more than that will guarantee the fridge and maybe a hot shower (say 700 baht up). Up to 2000 baht will likely mean just a newer, more stylish room and some better facilities.

I have no interest in it, honestly. Unless it was Star Trek style and I could actually go some place interesting.

your ideal form of perfect day would be?

Kayaking with a very small set of friends (or alone), with a nice camera in hand. A quiet picnic on the beach. Soaking in the ocean before returning home, showering, and going out dancing with the same set of friends.

Actually, had those days. Loved that. The only thing I miss about being in the US actually. lol

if you could be a tree what kind would you be?

I would hate to be a tree. But probably a slippery elm. Those fuckers are beautiful and tough.

do you like trance music?

Some of it.

do you like classical music?

Yes. I like the two biggies--Mozart and Beethoven quite a lot. And I like some of the others. Some of my favorite songs are written by Puccini.

do you like cupcakes?

yes

do you like answering questions?

Depends on my mood. Today, yes. Most days, no.

have you been following iamamiwhoiam?

I don't know what that is.

if you had a band what kind would it be?

Post modern electro-synth band with very British sensibilities.

whats your singing style?

I'm a baratone.

peach? plum or pear?

Peach.

do you like cats?

I've decided to refrain from own meat eating animals. I like cats enough, but they're no where near as sweet as dogs--only cleaner.

do you like me?

That's a stupid question. Of course.

do you like the org?

I think it's very entertaining.

do you like trees?

I love trees.

Thanks! lol But keep in mind I'll be a good 5-6" taller than most of the men out there I think; I was assuming that'd stop most of the creepiness. Rooms are cheap in bangkok! yay!

Yes! Mon's got beautiful skin! A white or blue bikini would totally bring her skin to life. Orange will fight it.

2. Do you think you could beat a Thai woman in a fight?

Oh hell no. I understand why Thai men tippy toe around their wives and girlfriends. Thai doctors aren't the best in the world for reattaching penises for no reason!

3. What's your favourite Thai word that you've learnt and use regularly?

Mai Rue (I don't know). Shit, I use that hourly. lol

Though I use the polite Mai Saap mostly.

4. Is 20Ten going to be a pile of shit?

I take issue with the fact that Prince has been releases steaming piles of shit. All his recent albums have been ok. Not stellar. But ok.

In comparison, Stevie Wonder has released very boring material. MJ has released boring albums. Maddonas albums (I really shouldn't even compare or put her in this category) have been dreadfully derivative.

I listen to 3121 more than I do ATWIAD, Dirty Mind, or even SOTT (though SOTT is a better album).

I think 20Ten will be better than MPLSound, but probably in that vein. However, I don't think we'll hear much that is new or anything that will make our jaws drop. Prince is obviously trying to grow his market through the newspapers. This means potential millions of folks who haven't been keeping up with him will hear this album---he has to make the material interesting, catchy, but not strain the ear too much. So, he'll play it a bit safe with 20Ten.

That's only a guess. It'll be a cool album. Just not mind blowing or anything radically new.

This is 750 baht a night and you get air-con, TV, fridge and hot shower. It's pretty basic decor-wise and a bit dark, but for $23 a night not bad. Pretty standard fare for that money in Bkk, just to give you an example.

Re the creepiness. I don't think guys would bug you all that much. A few people in touristy areas will try to sell you something, or get you to come into their shop/bar/tailors/massage place, but they'll do that to any foreigner and they're not all that pushy (not as bad as in Bali). You just say no thanks and walk on.

I think black is best for her. White is unflattering if you're not super-slim. Orange may fight it, but I'ma fight you. mad

Mai saap... ooh look at you! lol Do you say 'pen yangnai sabai dii mai reu plao khrap'? It's nice to be polite though. I speak politely on occasion.

I preferred Stevie's 'A Time To Love' to all the albums Prince has done since Musicology. neutral But I hear what you're saying. Still, Al Green's last album beats pretty much anything any of those artists have put out this last 10 years and that was just Al Green doing 70s Al Green. smile

I can only doodle on keyboard and guitar (no real training at all, and I can't keep a beat).

Here's some examples: http://www.myspace.com/imago777

I like the tunes despite, but I wish I knew more. The only instruments used were a keyboard and an acoustic guitar that I artificially amped up on my mac.

lol I wanna see his answer to that one. I imagine it'd make a dull sit-com though, titled "My Wife And Her Brother's Kids". My wife is more attractive than me though, so that's already very american sit-com style. I'd just have to mess up and then come good at the end, showing my lovable side, and it could work. lol
