Its not really that much more of a commitment than a regular running schedule... If you run 3-5 times a week of at least 5 miles a day you only need to add on a long run which gets progressively longer as you near the race... Its only one day of the week that you need to do a long run...

In my training schedule, (if I havent been running 10 milers regularly like in the winter time) I start 2 months before the race, run my daily 5 miles everyday, take saturday off, then do my long runs on sunday... On some of the regular running days I will do the eliptical for 45-60 minutes instead....

Its only basically an hour a day plus 1-1/2 -2 (when you start racking up miles) on sunday....

When im not in race training, i do my weekly runs as normal and do a 10 miler on sundays... this way I am ALWAYS in shape if a race comes up at the last minute....

I'm not gonna lie! I cannot run! (I know I said that earlier redface)

But I applaud your commitment. clapping

Since I'm feeling better, I will be hitting the gym again. biggrin

Thanks!

This is actually my second 5k and I did a 10 mile race last year. smile I still consider myself a noive, but it's been about 15 months that I've been doing this.

I'm thinking about training for a half marathon next year perhaps. It's just soooooooo much commitment.

That base mileage thing you mentioned is what I'm trying to get to. I've only started running in March after a long hiatus, but the body remembers what I put it through in the past, so it wasn't as hard as I'd thought. I did do a 10 miler a few weeks ago as a training run and it wasn't bad.

I'm following a training plan from the Runner's World book, Run Less, Run Faster, which basically says you only need to run three times a week, which consists of two quality workouts, such as a tempo or speed work out, plus a long run of course. You then supplement those runs with a couple crosstraining workouts such as Spinning cycle or Swimming. The book recommends I start 18 weeks prior to the race, so my Training starts next week for the L.A. RockNRoll Half Marathon in October.

Good luck in your training, I'm glad there's a few people here who are obssesed with Running as I am.

Btw, a great social network for runners is www.dailymile.com . You can find tons of local runners who motivate each other with their workouts.

Good luck in your training as well! I have a race coming up on sept. 26th.. DO you have a PR goal or do you just run to run in it?

Im not the fastest runner ever, but hey, im 42 y/o!!....lol So my goal is a half in under 2 hours... Im pretty close, so Im hoping this time I get it!! I run about a 9-9 1/2 minute mile..

Yeah, I can, 5 is my limit tough, after that I need 10 or 15 minutes to rest, relax the legs and drink some water or sumthing before I make another 4 or 5 km...

i can (and do) run all day if i'm chasing a football, but put me in a tracksuit and ask me to run and i'll quit in about 3 minutes.

i love sport, i detest exercise.

That's quite what I do at the moment. I do not detest exercise, though, I simply don't find the motivation for it.

But yeah, on the football pitch I'm like a horse, running non-stop and usually being the by far quickest!

i walk 3 x 2 miles each day with my dog. but i wouldn't be able to run to the end of the

street, i think. i tried it sometimes, at night, with my dog, but by the second minute, i'd

be hunched over, my heart beating so hard i thought it would crack my ribs lol

my doc says it's ok, in regards to general excercise, that i walk about 6-7 miles every

day and i don't have to do 'cardio', but since my body feels like it might explode on me

whenever i do run a stretch or get very 'physical' *cough cough*, i'm thinking that the

walking might be good for something, though not for endurance.

and isn't excercise only good when it increases your heartrate to a certain bpm?

i guess i should quit smoking again and try to increase the pace of the walks i have

with my dog and then try to do some running in a few months. i desperately need to

get back into some form of shape.

my weight is just fine, no problems there but being completely floored from running

up 6 stairs leaves me somewhat worried.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Thanks. I run at about the same pace as you, so a sub 2.00 hour Half-Marathon would be a dream for me. Based on my finish times for my last 10k & 5k, I think it's doable. I gotta find an available Oval track to do some proper speed & tempo workouts.

I'm built for comfort, not speed. hmph!

No, I doubt it. My knees are too messed up from old sports injuries to let me run that far without building it up to it and gradually strengthening them over a decent period of time. I could swim it right now though, no problem. And I bet I could still run the 100m in the high 11 second bracket. smile

No, but I'm working on it. I've got bad asthma that has kept me from running for a long time, but after narrowly avoiding hospitalization in the spring, I've finally found a combination of meds (5 of them lol ) that has me doing a bit better, so I'm trying to run. I can't go very far yet, but I think I'll probably get to 5k eventually.

I can walk it easily, and do regularly. Did this morning, in fact.
