What does being gay have to do with running, do you run differently from everyone else if you are gay? Or did you just fancy throwing the fact into your reply?

All the marathon runners are gay. Didn't you ever notice the limp wrist?

Ha! A bit proud of myself at the moment, so that's why I inserted that bit of info about myself.Six months ago, I was overweight and generally in bad health & miserable. I started running again, changed my diet, and never felt better in years.Cheers. [Edited 6/20/10 16:48pm]

Hell no. I can't run that much ! I tried to take up running not too long ago and that shit was not happening. My chest is too big for that and I have a bad knee. That's a bad combination right there.

Basically it was something about how ya'll shouldnt make fun of people who can run for hours and not get tired and out of breath... Something along those lines anyway... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

That'll be a breeze. I either run or walk around 5 miles at least twice a week. Used to be more often.

I can do something else for hours and not get tired and out of breath - is that alright too?

I tried to start running but my knees got way too sore and that scared me thought I may be doing some damage. at the moment I'm just using the elliptical at the gym, maybe in a couple of months I will give running another try! Rhythm floods my heart♥The melody it feeds my soul

All out honestly, to run the whole 5K..yeah I'd die. Have no shame in admitting that. I've always found it hard to run for a long period of time...I always get tired and start walking, then I'll run then I'll walk. I admire those who can run for a long period of time though. How do you guys keep the same pace of running for a long time period like that? That's always been a mystery to me. I wonder if I start out running too fast and that's what burns me out so quickly. I dunno. [Edited 6/21/10 4:40am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

There's a 5k Training plan here;
http://www.coolrunning.co.../181.shtml
The hard part for beginners is motivation, so one good way to start is to sign up for a local 5k race. Check for local running groups in your area. It's a whole lot easier with a group of people with the same abilities as you motivating each other. Also, it's very important you get the right type of running shoes, since everybody have different types of feet (normal, flat, or high arch), and you don't wanna get injured. A local speciality running store should be able to help you. Plus, there's no shame in run/walking in a race. That's how I trained for my two Marathons. Good luck.

I echo these sentiments. I got started by joining a learn-to-run clinic. The training program listed and others like it TOTALLY work to allow you to progressively run for longer periods of time and for me, doing it with a group really motivated me. But even if your'e doing it alone, it's really cool to see your progress from week to week.
And I totally still run/walk. Anywhere from 5 to 10 minute intervals with a 1 minute walk break in between. I'm doing a 5k race in a few weeks and will totally be doing 10:1s through the whole thing and I know I won't be the only one out there walking from time to time. |

Thanks for the tips and the link. You are right about the motivation part. I'll check out when the next 5K is for my area. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Thanks!
This is actually my second 5k and I did a 10 mile race last year. I still consider myself a noive, but it's been about 15 months that I've been doing this.
I'm thinking about training for a half marathon next year perhaps. It's just soooooooo much commitment. |

And co-sign! | |

Its not really that much more of a commitment than a regular running schedule... If you run 3-5 times a week of at least 5 miles a day you only need to add on a long run which gets progressively longer as you near the race... Its only one day of the week that you need to do a long run...
In my training schedule, (if I havent been running 10 milers regularly like in the winter time) I start 2 months before the race, run my daily 5 miles everyday, take saturday off, then do my long runs on sunday... On some of the regular running days I will do the eliptical for 45-60 minutes instead....
Its only basically an hour a day plus 1-1/2 -2 (when you start racking up miles) on sunday....
When im not in race training, i do my weekly runs as normal and do a 10 miler on sundays... this way I am ALWAYS in shape if a race comes up at the last minute....

I'm not gonna lie! I cannot run! (I know I said that earlier ) But I applaud your commitment.
Since I'm feeling better, I will be hitting the gym again. [Edited 6/21/10 13:12pm] "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"
