wave Gay Vegetarian Runner here! I've ran two marathons for AIDS Marathon in the past. My last 5k was 26:56 and my 10K time this year was 54:55 at the Pride run in WeHo(West Hollywood). I did a 10K today(treadmill). Still want to improve. RockNRoll Half Marathon here in Los Angeles in October, possibly a full Marathon later in the year. My dream is to qualify for the Boston Marathon some day.

neutral What does being gay have to do with running, do you run differently from everyone else if you are gay?

Or did you just fancy throwing the fact into your reply? lol

Ha! A bit proud of myself at the moment, so that's why I inserted that bit of info about myself.Six months ago, I was overweight and generally in bad health & miserable. I started running again, changed my diet, and never felt better in years.Cheers.

I was walking the tightrope between chubby cunt and fat bastard for a while there - which just crept up on me while I was eating and drinking like Henry the 8th. I've never excercised in my life and never will - i just don't agree with it. I focus all the hate in the universe upon jogger's chests to try to explode theirhearts like Carrie would.

However, about a year ago, I realised I'd lost my cheekbones. My fucking cheekbones, which defined me and sliced open new dimensions as I glided through this plane of existence. I thought, I'm not fucking having that. I then startled to realise the deposits of flab hadn;t stopped at my head - I'd become a bit of a chubster - never even noticed it happening. It's like how you see a baby after six months and it's walking & talking, asking you for fags and sex.

So, I started laying off the bevvy and smoking more fags at lunchtime instead of freebasing McDonalds milkshakes and using M&Ms as suppositories. I realise now I must have been compensating for the lack of mental stimulation in my life at the time and was subconciously either trying to kill myself or make myself so unattractive that I'd eventually become consumed with self-loathing and either completely reinvent myself or go on a killing spree.

I'm back to my slim old self now, but realise I look a bit older than I did. The killing spree'll wait for when I start to go bald.

All out honestly, to run the whole 5K..yeah I'd die. lol Have no shame in admitting that. I've always found it hard to run for a long period of time...I always get tired and start walking, then I'll run then I'll walk. I admire those who can run for a long period of time though. How do you guys keep the same pace of running for a long time period like that? confuse That's always been a mystery to me. I wonder if I start out running too fast and that's what burns me out so quickly. I dunno. shrug

There's a 5k Training plan here;

http://www.coolrunning.co.../181.shtml

The hard part for beginners is motivation, so one good way to start is to sign up for a local 5k race. Check for local running groups in your area. It's a whole lot easier with a group of people with the same abilities as you motivating each other. Also, it's very important you get the right type of running shoes, since everybody have different types of feet (normal,flat, or high arch), and you don't wanna get injured. A local speciality running store should be able to help you. Plus, there's no shame in run/walking in a race. That's how I trained for my two Marathons. Good luck.

I echo these sentiments. I got started by joining a learn-to-run clinic. The training program listed and others like it TOTALLY work to allow you to progressively run for longer periods of time and for me, doing it with a group really motivated me. But even if your'e doing it alone, it's really cool to see your progress from week to week.

And I totally still run/walk. Anywhere from 5 to 10 minute intervals with a 1 minute walk break in between. I'm doing a 5k race in a few weeks and will totally be doing 10:1s through the whole thing and I know I won't be the only one out there walking from time to time. smile

Its not really that much more of a commitment than a regular running schedule... If you run 3-5 times a week of at least 5 miles a day you only need to add on a long run which gets progressively longer as you near the race... Its only one day of the week that you need to do a long run...

In my training schedule, (if I havent been running 10 milers regularly like in the winter time) I start 2 months before the race, run my daily 5 miles everyday, take saturday off, then do my long runs on sunday... On some of the regular running days I will do the eliptical for 45-60 minutes instead....

Its only basically an hour a day plus 1-1/2 -2 (when you start racking up miles) on sunday....

When im not in race training, i do my weekly runs as normal and do a 10 miler on sundays... this way I am ALWAYS in shape if a race comes up at the last minute....
