I hate pit bulls. I've seen them first hand in action ripping other breeds apart.

I don't trust them at all. I have a friend who owns a pet store and has been

a dog breeder for 25 years. He has a well trained pit he keeps in the house

and he follows his every command but he also protects his owner. I remember

watching a steelers game at his home and after a td i jumped up to high five

him and his pit stared me down like the devil and i sat down like a bitch with

the quickness. From now on when i go over to watch a game, the dog will come

to the door and greet me but when my friend tells him to go in the back he

quickly obliges.

I LOVE pits. They are high strung. Which means you must walk her. A LOT. And you can't be a soft owner either. Pits are very smart and can pick up softness with a quickness. You could have gotten yourself a boxer, or a mastiff and you would be just as protected. They are in the same family of breeds, and a lot less judgement from others.

I am taking care of a girlfriend's pit right now. He is an ANGEL. But he was WELL trained, and his owner spent A LOT of time with him.

That dog needs to be in dog parks every weekend. She needs to be introduced to a lot of people and children. She needs long and rigorous walks, and an alpha master. They are very sensitive and needy too. Do not play tug of war with her toys. And above all do not baby her. Yes, affection is OK, but spoiling her means she has the upper hand...to her. Which means she will start doing bad stuff and showing her ass.

Just my two cents. We're getting a Rott next year. Only because they are more calm than pits. And we plan on doing all that I just told you to do. Rotts actually have a bite about 2 times stronger than a pit (300 pounds of pressure). We aren't playing around. That fool better mind his manners.

Ha ha ha! The exact same thing happened to me as a teenager. Except it wasn't a Pit, it was a Mut. I spent the night over my girlfriends house, I slept in her bed, she slept on the floor and the dog slept on the floor next to her. She sleeps with the radio on at night, and it was a little too loud, so in the darkness I reached for the volume on the radio which was right directly over where she was sleeping, the dog jumped my ass, had me screaming like a lil bitch waking up both of her parents, they ran in the room and turned on the lights, and there I sat and looking and feeling all stupid when they ran in the room to check to see who the hell was murdered.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Trust me as I hugged and kissed my Pit on the forehead, I also felt for spots of vunerability in her neck or skull in case I have to put that ass ta bed. I hope that will never ever happen, but I aint going out like that. She has already been disciplined twice, but has received a lot of love. Too early to really walk her for exercise, because there is a Parvo epidemic here I have to wait until she is 2 weeks past 4 months and fully vaccinated, and presently she is only 2 months and 2 weeks.

Well as far as Mastif's are concerned remember Ving Rhame's Mastiff murdered it's handler. I didn't like the way Vhing handled it publically. He showed no sympathy and basically said...oh well, it was his job to train and handle him. Thanks Vhing.

Is it really worth it to have a dog like that? Really?

As soon as I hear a person has pit bulls, I lose a degree of respect for them. I really have to question their judgement, and their motives.

Con grats on the pup but i am sad that the impulse thought came in a bit late anyway

They are amazing pets but the breed is a i need mental stimulation socialization and obedience training. The same goe for the chihuahua you have i have been bit by more lil dogs than big ones in the past 27 years working with animals beacause lil dogs are treated like babys so no training.

They crate train really well with a lot of exercise they are calm and love every one but the human pet bond needs to structured they have fairly healthy lives but if he was bought in a pet store or a breeder that does not have both parents in the home and you did not see how calm they were

then it is good vet care and training that will keep you happy . most local shelters offer low cost or frre training classes if you work all day and do not get a dog walker they have doggy day cares that i think is great the shelter also has pit bull rescues and they can give you some great tips on their needs .

i wish you lots of luck ps the dog whisperer books and videos are awsome for advice .

Yeah I love Ceasar Millan. Of course his favorites are Pits, but he does good work with Chihuahuas too. My Chihuahua is a maniac. Shes had a lot of pentup unreleased energy because she broke her foot and was forbidded to exercise. We went out for a walk yesterday. Cast was removed last week. She's a bit frantic and ALWAYS initiates conflict with the Pitbull. I love my Chi and I want her here with me uninjured, I have the two separated for the time being, but ultimately I want them to get along. I do need training to get that done.

i always thought that the one and only reason people have pitbulls is so that people will think they are hard. i still kind of think that, actually.

i don't see what you can get from a pit that you can't get from other breeds apart from street cred.

nod Yup. You see them all over the city parading their dogs around tethered to big ass chains and spiked collars rolleyes and we're all supposed to be impressed. First thought comes to my mind, "Killer in the making." I really do not fault the breed. With proper care, nurturing and training, they can be lovely pets and terrific guard dogs.

I've owned Dobermans and Chows, and they NO WHERE near as vicious and vile as pits.

I NEVER was attcked by any Pit ever, I was attcked by a Chow. It was an unprovoked attack, the owner told me that they get that way as they age. I was shocked, been around dogs all my life. It surprised me that a larger dog (Chow) would be so aggressive. Usually med-larger dogs tend to be mild tempered in comparison to their smaller counterparts.

Dobermans tend to be the best guard dogs because they tend to be the most protective.

Dobermans were once thought of as dangerous breed too. They are not.

Same here. I was petting a chow puppy and that lil bastid bit me! Evil ass lil sucker! lol I learned a lesson that day, too. Keep my distance from them mofoes! biggrin

HATE THESE DOG OWNERS. Everyone will come out of the woodworks that pits are great and they are fantastic owners and my guess is that most orgers are. However in the general world, these dogs are a replacement for some missing equation of manhood. Anyone who owns one is suspect to me. That's probably because in LA, you see thugs on the street with these godawful dogs.

You aint lyin! That's why we never had GS while growing up. They are too quick to bite. We had labs , chihauhaus and mutts.

I would own a pitbull terrier but not a pitbull...only because of the unexpected temper. They're still cute as hell.

Huh? They are the same. Pitbulls are terriers - in the hunting breed. Pits are excellent jumpers and can climb stuff really well. And like the one in that video, are really good at destroying property. Gotta keep lots of dried beef/pork hide handy for them to chew on as puppies! lol

Strafforshire (sp) bull terriers run in the same vein as Boxers, Boston terriors, Jack Russells, and other terrior breeds... they are just the most misunderstood, overbred, and hated. They make excellent family dogs though, Teddy Roosevelt had them in the White house with him.

It is hard to have a dog that is overbred, and inbred and pits usually are. sad

Yanno, I was walking into PetSmart with my Chihuahua the other day (cause she's my real side kick), and I saw this mean looking man with a tatoo on sporting his PitBull with clipped ears coming out of PetSmart. Immediately "judgement" about the type of individual he was came over me. And then I looked down at my Chihuahua and thought.....damn, If my Pitbull had been fully vaccinated, I would have probably bought her to PetSmart with me too. I would hope that no one would look at my "grown and sexy" azz and think that I was trying to be hard or punk some chump! LOL . It all boils down to people's judgements. I walked my Chihuahua last night. No one would suspect I also have a Pit. Sometimes I think people should go easy.

Ok I feel a lot better about the situation today. I called my local Animal Control and explained my situation (they are closed on Sunday and Mondays when I started this thread). I explained that I have small patio space, and live in a 2 story townhouse / condo and that I'm only willing to give the pitbull access to one of those stories, plus the patio space. I also explained that I learned after the fact that the Pitbull was a helluva barker, and that I will face massive problems by my HOA out here if I allow the pit to be out on the balcony / patio and bark all day long while i'm at work. I also told her about my Chihuahua from hell who is trying to provoke death upon herself by taunting the Pit.

Here is what the Animal Control person told me. She said that there are "barking collars" for the dog that administers shocks and will stop the barking. She also told me that the amount of space that I have downstairs has nothing to do with having a Pit. She said the real concern is my need to take the Pit on daily walks, because they need to release energy. I asked if there were any City Ordinances that I needed to be aware of, she said none other than being a responsible owner and getting the dog licensed as appropriate. I asked her if in the worst case situation, should I surrender the dog now, or surrender it after I've tried everything out and all else failed. She said either way you have to pay $50 to surrender the animal, so why not just wait and see how things goes, and try to make it work out. I asked her about the temperament of the dog....she said "nonsense". So, armed with that info. I am feeling a lot more confident. She gave me a name of a dog temperament tester that the county uses prior to allowing it's dogs to be adopted. So I will definitely be giving him a call soon, as he can also help with the beef between my Pit and Chihuahua.

I feel like a giant load has been taken off.

There is this show called "It's me or the dog". This British dog trainer trains people on how to manage their dog. This couple in England had a Bull Terrier that would hump everything. The woman pulled up her pant legs and her legs were black and blue like she'd been in a fight because the bull terrier would hump her leg like a maniac. It is remarkable that it took that woman to come to their home before they even remotely considered getting the dog fixed. That dog's habit had become so imbedded that even after he was fixed, he continued to hump. What's even worst is that she allowed him to hump her leg like that. I'm telling you this woman's leg looked like it was attacked viciously. Her husband was useless, and she had a little girl, which they never showed the dog hump. But the little girl said that she was sadden by the way that the dog acts. The couple were British Punk Rockers. Little girl was so cute and normal looking.
