Those are two different holes, I think.

According to CNN, 175 are now confirmed dead.

And:

In the northern part of Guatemala City, the downpour created a sinkhole the size of a street intersection. Residents told CNN that a three-story building and a house fell into the hole.

That's one scary sink hole.

That's the sinkhole in Guatemala in the first pic and a similar hole in the second pic.

From what I read it was a sewer main which collapsed due to being clogged so I would imagine that sewage is at the bottom. They recovered 3 bodies from the sewage so far.

According to the report the hole is around 300 ft deep so I'm guessing it's probably pitch black way down there...we probably wouldn't be able to see much anyway.

a lot of engineering goes into it. At it's most basic level, the subsurface needs to be consolidated. This is usually done by injecting a concrete grout mixture under pressure. However, with holes that large...some more work will be involved.

Sounds to me like it wasn't so much a geological sinkhole, but it was exasperated by the sanitary sewer line underground.

Interesting... Ive seen sink holes, but it just looked like the ground had sunk down a bit... I cant imagine seeing this in real life!

Don't worry tina. There is always some type of bedrock beneath the soft upper earth. Here in Florida, our limestone layer is anywhere from 5 to 200 feet below surface elevation. Other parts of the world have different depths and different types of load bearing material underneath.

A sinkhole is not really a hole per se, it's more of a downward raveling of loose soils...until it hits a hard layer or there isn't anymore soil above to fall.

I sound like a total nerd on this thread.

wrong, the earth is actually hollow, and the sinkholes lead to the Land of Advanced Races
