New York City Folks - Favorite Street Food So do tell, you Gothamites, what is your favorite street vendor food? I ask because my friend Doug runs the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in NYC, and he has gotten so much press since he started it last year. Even he's surprised at the attention it's gotten. People seem to love it. But it got me to thinking - what is your favorite street vendor food? Where corner is it on, etc?
And for non-NY people, do you go to a regular spot to get food, like a street vendor or a kiosk somewhere? I love little out of the way greasy spoon places - they always have some of the best food.

When i lived in New York it was always the hole-in-the-wall places with the best food, i lived in Yonkers in the Irish town and i put on about 50lb's in a year because i couldn't resist the food !!
Now in Oklahoma City i still go to the little places, one thing that annoys me is at the Chinese food places here, the food tastes crap during the week, but when their good chef's work at the weekends it's always incredible.

I haven't tried the street venor foods on my visits, but if there's a line it must be good. And you can usually tell by following your nose.
Shake Shack is my new NYC addiction ... and Mamoun's for a quick tasty felafel near Washington Square. Ishan Cooper - #BATFUNKCRAZY LP out now.. in 3D!!! https://ishancooper.bandcamp.com PURE UNCUT FUNK FROM DOWNUNDER \m/

We cannot deny the fact that street foods are not that safe but we still want to buy some of those. Foods on street are much cheaper. Eating is really one of our favorite activities but we still need to choose wisely what we are going to eat. Giving importance to our healthful living can helps us to stay fit. If we won't take good care of or health chances are we might get sick. Having health problems do not only affect our health but this would surely leave a major strain to our budget. Let's be more health conscious!

I'm from NJ... When I got into the City, I avoid street vendors. They just don't look clean enough to me.
My favorite place to eat is the Moonstruck Diner in Chelsea on 23rd & 9th. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

All of that is true and fine and dandy, but to answer the topic question..I love my chicken gyro at this stand in downtown Brooklyn in Fulton Plaza...and in Philly there's a caribbean truck near 30th st train station that is incredible!...and cheap

Off topic, and no real evidence to support the "not that safe" statement. Go preach somewhere else.

I was born and raised in OKC. Tulsa has better Chinese take out or dine in places throughout the whole week. It's bene 10 years since I've been back home, so I'm overdue to visit. I fear when I go back, all i'd do is eat. Even in NY, there's so much we don't have here that they have in OK.

Food bought from street vendors in New York is actually safe. Street vendors are licensed and inspected regularly. And the kinds of foods they sell run the gamut from soup to nuts--speaking of which, the nuts are my favorite thing to buy from street vendors.

You couldn't pay me enough to eat street food. Luckily I'm a vegetarian, but no way would I eat any meat from one of those carts. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I have a friend that HAS to have one of those things every time we go into the City.

My wife LOVES those "dirty-water hot dogs" from the street vendors.
I personally want to go to the Red Hook Ball Fields in Brooklyn to try out the food stalls.

arent these street vendors unsanitary?

Considering the millions of people that eat from them, if people were getting sick they'd have been shut down by now (I would think). By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I know!!! The same thing happens here in the DC area. I found a Chinese restaurant that served the best General Tao's chicken. I mean it was so good, I would have slapped my mama if she tried to take some. The next time I ordered it, it was for shit! I was so disappointed and asked what happened. That's when I learned about the cooks' shifts.

I'm originally from the midwest (Iowa) and hot dogs disgust me! Anything that comes in its own casing is nasty. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

True. Iowans are far more progressive than they are given credit for. Also, what I pay in rent here in NYC would afford me a small mansion in Iowa.
I'd probably only live in it for about six months before I killed myself, though.
