Peace talks could be happening, but each side has demands (reds to end violence, burning tyres etc. and army to return to barracks) which I doubt the other will want to accept.

But now this...

Hundreds of police and army, backed by armored vehicles, are converging on the perimeter of an anti-government protest camp in Bangkok, reporters saw early on Wednesday.

Twelve armoured personnel carriers (APCs) with machine guns mounted on top arrived in the Silom business district, where several trucks dropped off troops wearing balaclavas and carrying weapons and riot shields.

Thailand's army spokesman declined to comment on whether a crackdown was imminent on the protesters, who are defying a Monday deadline to disperse after occupying Bangkok's main retail district for six weeks.

"I will not answer any questions," spokesman Col Sunsern Kaewkumnerd said.

Hundreds of armed police were forming lines in Sukhumvit Road, a main thoroughfare leading into the protest zone, backed up by some 20 police vans on the roadside.

Leaders of the red shirts warned late Tuesday that they were concerned a crackdown would be launched at dawn, after the government ruled out negotiations until they abandoned their heavily fortified rally base.

Security forces had battled with protesters since Thursday as they attempted to seal off the protest site, triggering clashes that have left 39 dead and hundreds injured.

The violence, which eased Tuesday with only sporadic gunfire, turned parts of the city of 12 million into no-go zones as troops used live ammunition against protesters, who fought back mainly with homemade weapons.

There's no doubt that there will be crackdown.

It's going to end rather unpleasently I suspect. Bangkok is losing millions a week to the shut down of key businesses in the center of the city. It simply can't go on forever. In the end it's all about money anywhere in the world. It's been almost 2 months that Siam Paragon has been out of operation---can you imagine being a blue collar salesman and not being able to work for two months? lol

There's gonna be a crackdown. sad

No, the kind Dr. called me 2 days ago and asked me to fill in for a week long lecture series today, so I need to catch the bus soon.

It's been affecting my class size and I've been asked to be lenient on absences, etc. due to this. I'm thinking, well it's a holiday rolleyes...gimmmie MAH holidayz bitch. rolleyes

Then I realize that in lieu of all the things going on, I probably should stop thinking about myself. rolleyes

Hey, the short answer is no I haven't.

That's exactly it, isn't it? It's unacceptable for places like Sathon to be shut down like this. It's all the money lost. This last week 36 ppl have died in the clashes. It's tragic, but that's just a bus going over a cliff in Chiang Rai. In the end it's about the money.

Here's part of the problem. Does this sound like an army on board with what the government wants? The army is loyal to the king, not the government.

The reinforcement of armoured vehicles and troops in Silom and Saladaeng areas early this morning showed that the government will today use force to crackdown on red-shirt protesters at Ratchaprasong intersection, Gen Lertrat Rattanavanich, an appointed senator, said on Wednesday.

"It is likely that the government wants to rapidly end red-shirts rally, probably within today. There will be no peace talk as the government chooses to use force rather than political mechanism", Gen Lertrat said.

The senator could not imagine what the 5,000 red-shirts at the rally site would be when the crackdown starts.

He projected more than 100 reds would be killed and more than one thousand would be injured.

Gen Lertrat also doubted whether the government could keep the situation under control as the red-shirts had vowed to fight until the last minute.

How could there be a swift and decisive crackdown if the army doesn't want to make it happen? I think there will be another 10-15 deaths today and still no major resolution or permanent end to the protests.

Good question. My guess is it's not too hard to come by weapons here if you're in the market for them. Seh Daeng, who just got shot dead the other day, was a former army general who only left the army earlier this year. He was a supporter of the red shirts so maybe he could pull a few strings, who knows. It's all being funded mostly by former PM Thaksin Chinawatra though. He's in exile.

Thanks.
They've locked the Uni up and only Ajarns (professors) can get in and out of the place and ONLY until 8 PM at which point it becomes a prison.

The city is under a curfew right now which probably means the military & police are 'sweeping up'.

Apparently Central World shopping mall is falling down? eek

27 buildings set ablaze yesterday afternoon and last night. For its affiliations it seems every Bangkok Bank they passed as they retreated they set on fire. SET building too, plus a few hotels, more shopping malls and a few government buildings.

Big C supermarket, opposite Central World, has been set on fire this morning. disbelief

It's disgusting. Somehow I get the feeling they did more damage yesterday afternoon after the red leaders' (some of them, anyway) surrender than they did in all the days prior.

MBK? Nooooo!

I noticed on the way home last night that outside Central Pinklao they had this row of cones and it looked like some kind of checkpoint was shortly going to be set up. This could spread all over and be far worse than it was when everything was contained in pretty much a 5km square area.

There's a group who've come out and said they're not part of the red shirts and are operating independently. neutral
