hee hee. just got off the phone with the guy playing josh in "beasts"

he wanted to read a bit of difficult dialogue in the second act to make sure he isn't making it too dirty. it was kind of filthy hot to listen to him drop his voice into this sexual growl as he talks to kevin and then more natural when talking to danni in the innercut dialogue as i read the dialogue with him.

he really understands implicitly how to balance the erotic moment and the very disturbing nature of that seduction. god bless him. i have been TERRIFIED about reaction to that scene as it is the character recounting/reliving in flashback the moment he begins seducing his younger step brother. that was the first time i have heard an actor do that scene, and he nails it in a way that is both very hot and very disturbing, which is exactly the uncomfortable balance it needs to be.

and he has no fear of the nudity and the simulated sex he has to do.

lol

some. i like em when they're not bumming me out with stories of their pain. i appreciate why they are doing it, as they are connecting as audience members and actors, but... it kind of gets difficult for me. i absorb other people's pain.

It isn't the actors' fault. You're asking them to pour out their souls and, basically, establishing a very deep relationship with them - at an audition, no less. No wonder they're getting ideas.

1. Why are you talking to them about your process? They're actors. The process shouldn't matter to them - unless you're workshopping everything. In which case, they're readers - only. Make them feel like collaborators and they're going to expect you to include them in the process to the point of writing them in. Which they've done, apparently.

mostly because the line between fiction and reality is important to the plays. the lines between my reality and the plays is parralel to the line between ben's reality and the existance he is writing around him.

they are a part of my process too. i have been very encouraging of their feedback, ideas, and such, partially because i trust them (several being friends) and because i want them to internalize these roles big time, as most of them will be playing them for years if permanently cast.

So basically, they're doing exactly what you asked them to do - blurring the line between life and art. And you no longer like them because...?
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i ask the actors i have cast to understand the line. i don't ask anyone to tell me if they were molested, had friends who were murdered, and so on, cast or not. i don't mind the cast people doing it because that's a small group. the auditionees are a much larger group, and after a whole lot of those stories i was ready to burst into tears.

Well, again - this is why I suggested keeping the audition to the script. Don't give them a chance to "go there." It's an audition - not a therapy session.

Just read them and say, "Thank you - we'll be in touch." Don't even open the door.

Totally understandable! nod

You've had a major learning experience when it comes to casting. You need them to understand the material. You want them to show you they can emote the material. You don't want to hear WHY they understand and can emote the material.

Next set of auditions, nip that in the bud. I'm sure it is so spiritually draining to hear all of that being as kindhearted as you are.

if the friends of the actors really love the craft they would be acting and not doing what they r doing, they just want to be able to say they r in a film.
