Puerto Rican funeral home presents shooting victim on his motorcycle
If you thought you'd previously seen it all, well, you're wrong. Case in point: David Morales Colón, a 22-year-old Puerto Rican man who was shot to death last Thursday, and whose wake is now making headlines here in the United States mainland. How come? Well, suffice it to say that the funeral directors at Marin Funeral Home in San Juan's Hato Rey neighborhood have a flair for the unorthodox. For example, in 2008, they embalmed another young shooting victim and displayed his body standing up for the duration of a multi-day wake. Back to the present: Yesterday and today, callers who stopped to pay their final respects to the late Mr. Colón got a bit of a surprise. Instead of the traditional presentation of the body in a casket, Mr. Colón's corpse, dressed in casual duds and sunglasses, was instead posed in a very lifelike position atop his Repsol-liveried Honda CBR600 F4. According to Puerto Rico's Primera Hora newspaper, the motorcycle was given to the victim by his uncle, and upon Mr. Colón's untimely demise, family members delivered the bike to the funeral home specifically for this unusual wake. Lest you think this is some sort of insane hoax, here's the link to the local Primera Hora newspaper coverage, which features a multi-shot photo gallery, and here's the less detailed Associated Press wire version that's presently making the rounds. Finally, we've got a video posted after the jump. We'll say this: David Morales Colón rides into the afterlife in memorable style. Thanks to Joel for the tip, and thanks to Wes Siler for the bike ID. Viewings are pretty creepy to me anyway.
But he's not the first (or the last, I assume). There was a guy recently placed in his car wearing some kind of sports jersey. My Legacy

This reminds me of something I saw in Jet magazine years ago where a Chicago pimp was gunned down, and his father had a specially made casket in the form of a Rolls Royce and had his son's body propped up in a sitting position with $100-dollar bills splayed out in his hands. At least this guy looks life-like, but the taste level is questionable; but hey, I guess some would say he rolled out in style.

They don't look real, that's why I don't understand doing it. They look like wax dummies and the guy looks like he has pillows in his shirt. My Legacy

I simply do not get the need to see the dead leftovers of something a person used to be. Neither do I understand the insistence on burying them instead of cremating them. Hell, I don't even understand the need to have a tombstone. It just makes no sense to me. They're gone. I'm going to ask to be cremated and sprinkled in the ocean. So the next time yall go for a swim, you'll be bathing in remnants of me.

What's the big deal? It's really no different than a traditional open casket viewing. It's not tacky or disrespectful or gross or weird or anything else. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Some drug dealer's family had him propped up in a bight yellow ferrari wearing a jersey and shades. It was so unbelieveably tacky and wierd. I saved the article because I didn't think anybody would believe it otherwise. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Weirder than stuffing and preserving the body and displaying it for all to gawk at in the coffin it's going to be buried in? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

As far as I know, with the exception of Jewish people, bodies get embalmed routinely for a viewing whether it's a coffin or a motorbike so I don't get the stuffed and preserved part? Lying in repose represents the metaphorical sleep of death as opposed to depicting of the departed in action poses as though still alive...that's what I find wierd. they do good work I hope they had the air-conditioning on full-blast. I really, really, really, REALLY don't know what I think about this. Seems incredibly creepy to me. Even if I knew this guy and loved him with all my heart, I would NOT want to be sitting in that room with him propped-up in the corner like that. My mind goes in so many different directions looking at this picture, lol. Very odd, to say the least (...though certainly original). Judging from his posture, I would hate to think too long about how they got him to stay upright like that, lol.
