Classic Movies Every Ghey Should Know

Okay, I'm hoping for a little help on this one. johnart and I have had our own little, "Oh, my gawd - that movie's so faaaaabulous" club going for quite a while now. So I thought I should get out the purse and spill the contents.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Imitation of Life - both the 1934 version (Claudette Colbert) and the Douglas Sirk from the 50s.

Pretty much anything by Douglas Sirk, actually - The aforementioned Imitation of Life, plus Magnificent Obsession and All That Heaven Allows, for starters. (Rock Hudson - need I say more?) All That Heaven Allows is the movie that Far From Heaven (Julianne Moore) is based on.

Elizabeth Taylor films - Butterfield 8, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Last Time I Saw Paris. Suddenly Last Summer and A Place in the Sun (both with Montgomery Clift).

Bringing Up Baby. Cary Grant in a maribou-trimmed peignoir, yelling, "I just suddenly went GAY all of a sudden."

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane - Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Ask johnart about this one - it's one of his faves.

Grey Gardens - the documentary. Although the HBO movie is pretty fab, too.

That's just a start. Feel free to add - but remember, we're talking classic films. And there must be an element of fab.

I rewatched A Streetcar Named Desire the other day. What a fantastic film and what a wonderful character Blanche Dubois is.

I think Vivien Leigh overacts a bit but I still love her performance. And Marlon Brando, who makes a loathsome character like Stanley seem less so due to his incredible hotness.

A Star is Born - both the 1954 with Judy Garland and the 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

Of Human Bondage - Bette Davis kicking the crap out of that wuss Leslie Howard.

Mildred Pierce - Joan Crawford in one of her best.

So true!

Okay, this is from a different genre altogether, but I'm going to say My Fair Lady. As Will Truman said of Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering, "Two confirmed bachelors in their late fifties whose idea of a good time is dressing Audrey Hepburn in fabulous Edith Head outfits? Oh, they were gay, my friend. They were gay." lol

Suddenly Last Summer, and anything else with Katharine Hepburn

12 Angry Men, the original with Henry Fonda

I've seen just over 1000 movies (short by some standards). I'm slowly adding old movies to my list.

---

I finally watched, for the first time ever, Lawrence of Arabia. Checked that off my list.

Thanks for the suggestion about Drums Along The Mohawk. I live in upstate New York. The Mohawk river runs through the city, and the local quick trip chain, Stewarts (which is also a dairy) has an ice cream flavor called Crumbs Along The Mohawk. SO good! I hope the movie matches that. hahaha

That is amazingly weird. I started to hear about Grey Gardens through Rosie O'Donnell going on about it. I knew it was a play, then almost immediately found out it was based on a true story. Then I found out about the documentary, and downloaded it. I watched the HBO movie within a few days. AMAZING performances in the HBO movie by Drew and Jessica. Just amazing. They're a couple of staunch women.

S-T-A-U-N-C-H.

Staunch!

On the Waterfront - not great? Yeah, they always give eight Oscars (including Best Picture) to the "not great" films. lol
