I'd rather see hanging out at a bar for children demystified than the grotesque college binge drinking college & highschool Americans tend to do. It's like they've stumbled upon the holy grail of bad-assery when they can get ahold of liquor.

But then again, I've not read ANY studies on whether it's good or bad for kids--I just know from observation that it doesn't seem to affect UK or Germany kids all that much at the pubs.

Very good point.

I can see both sides to this issue. Depends on the establishment, the time of day (naturally) and the people involved.

If it's the middle of the afternoon and mom and/or dad are having one (or two drinks max) and leaving, I don't see that it's THAT big of a deal if it's not a seedy drinkers bar. If they also serve food and such. There are plenty of places that serve food and alcohol and there's nothing wrong with bringing a baby to.

Now, if it's a BAR and the primary activity is drinking and/or music stuff then it's WRONG. And should not be allowed, period. Especially if smoking were allowed. Bleh.

I'm a lot pickier. I'm not going to take my child anywhere that drunken adults are a high likelihood. So i don't care if it's first thing in the morning, or the middle of the afternoon. You take your kids to a RESTAURANT. If there's a BAR with a BARTENDER? I don't care if they're serving food, it's a BAR THAT SERVES FOOD. Which means grown folks doing grown things. Which means I don't want to see fucking kids in there.

The problem is fucking hipster parents that "still want to be cool" and don't want to be responsible. If you decided to be parents, then BE PARENTS. That means you get a BABYSITTER if you want grown-time. I don't care how cool you think you are, and how cute you think your kid is, they don't belong there. And I personally don't think you should be drinking and being responsible for infants anyways. That's just me.

I'm somewhere right in the middle of you and Carrie on this. When I think a bar that serves food, I think of places like Fuddruckcers, TGIFridays, Chilis, and chain places like that. These are places where I wouln't blink twice if I saw a wee one in there, if it was in the afternoon. In Miami Beach (my former hometown)there were so many restaurants that would change into bars in an instant, but it was okay to have the kids inside during the daytime, when it was in restaurant-flip flop-just came from swimming and need a tofu scramble mode. After a certain hour though, no kidies, naturally. Babies and nightlife don't mix.

That's exactly my point.

And just 'cause it isn't a chain place like TGIFriday's doesn't make it any less kid-friendly. There's a local brew pub that I'd see nothing wrong with stopping by and sitting outside on the patio on a sunny afternoon for a beer and a snack. But after 7-8-ish or so, it wouldn't be right.

Children do not belong in bars, period. Unless you're walking with the baby in a stroller, you have no bidness drinking more than one alcoholic drink anyway. Restaurants that serve liquor and food are the exception. But if you're gonna be driving with the child in the car, you got no bidness drinking either IMO.

On the one hand, I see your point.

On the other, one drink isn't harmful to anybody, so a parent isn't doing anything wrong. shrug Should they get wasted? Absolutely not. But a glass of wine or a pint isn't gonna hurt anything.

As for other patrons of the bar - that's what I meant by depends on the establishment.

I really think our attitude towards alcohol is all wrong in the US. If it weren't so "taboo" and we taught our children to consume it responsibly (by example) we wouldn't have nearly the problems we do.

Maybe not harmful, but yesterday when I went to get my Thai food, I had a Singha beer. The drive home was very, very cautious because I was a bit tipsy. I very rarely drink, and I'm a thin woman, so alcohol affects me much sooner than say a larger person.

And again, I think it depends on the establishment. The pub I mentioned I would think nothing of seeing a child in, in the afternoon, but the Chinese restaurant down the street that serves alcohol I wouldn’t allow anyone under 21 to set foot in, no matter the time of day. One specializes in brewing their own beer and the other in greasy Chinese but I know where the drunks hang out in the afternoon. And that pub serves brunch. Why aren’t babies allowed at brunch? lol

I really don’t understand this “no one just drinks one drink” mentality and think it further shows how messed up we are about alcohol in this country. Just because a place serves alcohol should not mean that everyone inside is ragingly drunk.

Which is all fine and well for you. And knowing that, you probably wouldn’t have a Singha while babysitting.

For others, it’s not the same.

I'm with U on this, Pimp.

I can't stand it... especially if it's not a restaurant with a bar, but just a bar. Even in the case of it being a restaurant/bar, why have your baby or infant AT the bar?

Drives me nuts.

I've never ever seen that. lol

But bringing a child into a loud, smoke filled bar is fucking disgusting.

Luckily all establishments are smoke free here, you can't even smoke in your own car with a kid in it around these parts anymore...and so it should be.

I've been in a 'cop bar' and establishments that would be considered classy or high brow by most people, and had _very_ unpredictable things happen-drunks coming in causing problems, brick coming through the window etc. Whenever alcohol or other drugs are added to a situation, that situation always has an element of danger added to it. It's not a safe place for children.

The greater Chicago area air quality is among the worst in the world . EPA studies/university studies have proven the correlation between cancer deaths and air quality and less not speak of the water quality. People who smoke and/or smoky air bar's are the least of my worries.

I went to bars with my late father more often than not to listen tojazz/blues music because that's where Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Wes Montgomery, Carmen McRae etc, etc.. performed, in bars. When my brothers and I had our own children we took them to bars to see some of the same folks and the new jazz cats. Since these musicians don't do mantinee sets, my kid (then 8 years of age) was out will after midnight listening to Roy Hargrove at Andy's Jazz Club, smoky air and all. But music wasn't the only reason why we took her. the places served great food. As I've said, no big deal but to each his or her's own.

If you wanna speak of excessive drinking, cussing, and (sometimes racist) obnoxious jerks.... taking my kid to a Cubs, Bears, and Bulls has been on occasions much worse. Go figure.

There's a bar a couple of towns over that has high chairs in it. whofarted I thought that was a little strange. But this bar also has a three legged dog that walks around the place. And I'm pretty sure there's a meth lab in the apartment above it. I've seen drug deals under the guise of buying a pitcher of beer. It's sad to think this place used to be a church many years ago.

My brother brought his son (my nephew) to a bar to jam with old Blues guys when the boy was 11. My nephew is an excellent drummer but I thought he didn't need this type of exposure at such a young age. I'm against kids in bars. I think it's just training the kid to potentially become an alcoholic.

Now, from the title i'm sure some people are going to be like "what the hell?" but hear me out.

This was a HUGE debate on CNN a couple of weeks ago.

I recently moved to NYC from Detroit. Now i'm not going to make this a "NYC" thing, because this was a pet peeve of mine when i lived in Detroit. And that was babies in bars. YES, babies. IN BARS.

I had dj residencies at bars for almost 4 years straight, and would occasionally see people bringing kids into the bar and it would drive me NUTS. In Michigan, you can smoke in bars and to see people with kids in there literally made me nuts. I almost got into a fight with a bartender at one neighborhood place that i'd frequent because his brother brought his kid in there and had him bellied up to the bar and I went off about it.

Here in NYC, obviously you can't smoke in bars but it doesn't make it less of an issue for me. I have a son, and he's never been in a bar and I wouldn't dream of taking him to one. I don't think I'd take him outside of the house if i'd been drinking, but that's just me. I've seen people here in Brooklyn WEARING BABIES ON THEIR BELLIES AT THE BAR AND SPILLING BEER ON THEM. And today, on St. Patrick's Day of all days I stopped by a neighborhood spot to grab a couple of pints and there were no less than 6 people with kids hanging out.

Here seems to be the point of contention.
There seems to be a difference of opinion over what a "bar" is.
Hipsters here seem to think that if it's a "pub" then it's alright.
To me a "pub" is a bar that serves food, and that's for grown folks.
If there's an actual BAR for people to sit at, then you probably shouldn't have your kid in there.

Anyways, that's my take on it.
What say you , Org?

nod I agree. I like how you post these things so I don't have to go to the trouble to type it all out myself. biggrin

Plus, is alcohol SO evil that a child should never even be exposed to it at all? lol What about drinking at home when the kid is there and watching? Or having a party? Is that wrong too?

I dunno.

Theres 2 bars on every block here, and theres as many kids as adults in them.

Like, I remember growing up and all the dads in the neighborhood would be shootin darts, and all the kids would be there too, and Pappy Joe would make us all burgers till the dads got done.

I can't explain it. Like, the bars here are kinda like candy stores. It's a bar but they sell snacks to, and kids can go in at anytime and get a Hot Bologna, a homemade Pickle or a twix bar if they wanted to.

So, I personally don't see what the big deal is.
I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I layed down with love and I woke up with lies
Whats it all worth only the heart can measure
It's not whats in the mirror but what's left inside
