But actually I love Howard. I truly believe he's a decent person under the persona. Comments like these are brutally honest, but he is being truthful about Hollywood. It's true, she has some serious hurdles to overcome to have a career. And he's suggesting that she's being lied to when people say otherwise, which I also agree with. Not that I could ever talk like him. I could not stand to say such mean things. [Edited 3/9/10 17:35pm] Is it really impossible, are people really that fucking shallow that they would not let her talent speak for itself? Gabby is happy with Gabby so what other people think about her is of no consequence. I agree, he's a total asshole, I have only learned to understand his language, so I don't hear it quite the same as the first time I heard him. It's not impossible, no, she's already had a high profile role. But Hollywood IS very shallow! Look at who has won Best Actress awards recently. Some are decent actresses but they're basically all skinny & beautiful (not that Gabby is not beautiful, but I'm just saying that does seem to be a prerequisite). I think his point, though it is very mean the way it's said, is not too different than any exec saying "you have a nice voice but I hate that shirt & your hairstyle" It's a personal comment about image as it related to marketability. It's mean, but it's all about $. The real question is not if Howard is right but why is he right and why doesn't Hollywood represent all types equally? My Legacy

My problem with what Howard is that, even though it may be true that Hollywood is too shallow to let Gabby have a real career, he said it in a tone that said he believed that she didn't deserve to have a decent career b/c of her weight. And that's a fucked up way to think. Plus he seemed to have a true disgust for the way she looked.

I can, talents speaks for itself and she already has movies lined up. She was a college student so if she doesn't want to act full time, she doesn't have to. Gabby's a smart girl "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

It was an assholish way to put things, but that's always been his gig. This shouldn't shock or outrage anyone any more than most any other thing he's done.
For the exception of Gabby deserving her nomination (I was hoping she'd be the upset actually ), there is some truth in what he says. Only time will tell how far her acting career will go. I think she's got the goods, but I doubt the opportunities will be there to allow her to work competitively in Hollywood.

While I don't agree with his tone, he is right. She is going to get typecasted. It's the same for almost all young, overweight girls in Hollywood. They get casted as the funny best friend. And while I loved her performance, I also wanted her to win the Oscar because I felt like it would be her last chance.
But I hope I end up being wrong. Shake it til ya make it

But I hope I end up being wrong. Most actresses outside the Hollywood weight mold who hit it big with something end up shedding some of their weight. They try to play it down as "I did it for me" or whatever not to get called a sell out, but it's what they do. America Ferrara comes to mind. Also the Less than Perfect chick, whom I totally preferred with weight on her:

I think it's fine that people agree with him. We're all entitled to have an opinion. Do I agree? No. No matter what size she is, I believe she will have a career beyond Precious. Anyone who runs their mouth like Howard wants attention. That's what he's known for. I haven't entertained his BS in ages. If she's in his mouth, in his head, baby girl must be doing something right. It's when they stop talking about you when it's a problem.
It's funny and really pathetic how hard some people try to bring others down. I wonder what's missing in their lives? I'm trying not to get worked up here 'cause I loved that woman in her role. (And yeah, I'm a big gal too.) Someone out there is watching. Someone we don't know of yet who isn't going to see Gabby and "typecast" her into the many labels bigger women get thrown into. But that's just how I feel. What is most important, honestly, is how she feels. I'm sure she shrugs off crap like Howard's drivel on the daily. But it isn't stopping her from being seen and smiling for the camera. So let Howie boo boo run his ittle mouth.

Asshole. BINGO!!! That's the bottom line. Gabby doesn't fit society's mold of skinny, blonde, and beautiful. There are miserable people out there who actually fit that mold, so what does that say about society? Folks are SOOOOO surprised that she has a fabulous personality, loves herself, and does not resemble the character that she played. I've been lurking blogs and messages boards the last couple of days since the Academy Awards, and the comments have been outrageously and unnecessarily cruel. There is this belief that somebody like Gabby should not be happy, feel loved, or have success because she does not fit the mainstream ideals of what a successful and attractive person would look like. Some people thought that it's all a facade and basically she hates herself and is ashamed and all that stuff, bascially projecting how they see her and figures she feels that same way about herself. Plus there is this repulsion with the putdowns. If she has been wearing a mask this whole time, she really is a great actress. That is alot of pressure to carry yourself a certain way in order to be accepted by Hollywood. Even if she never has another hit movie or gets any more accolades, she has already made it and nothing else really to prove. So the haters will hate because they can't deal with themselves and it's easier to focus on celebrities and others outside of themselves to make themselves feel better. I loved that she also said on the red carpet that she would "hit that" and "I'm not ashamed" to Gerard Butler. He played along and that was cute. Go Gabby!" "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
