Stephen A. Smith: Iverson Facing Drinking, Gambling Problems

Seems like AI's life is spiraling out of control. Hope Coach Thompson can talk some sense into him before it's too late.

I hope the best for AI. Although I am a Knicks fan, I have always liked him.

This will not be much help for the NBA's never-ending image problem. A number of players who made big money have lost it all. Latrell Sprewell, Antoine Walker are among the most well known. I have read that over 1/2 of NBA players go broke within 5 years of retirement. As sad as it is, I can't feel sorry for any of them.

I've always liked him as a player, but I'm not at all surprised to hear he has troubles.

I imagine him moping around complaining about his life rather than taking advantage of everything he has like Magic does.

I really like AI and wish him all the best.. This might be the reason why Wifey has had enough..people were quick to say she's divorcing him because he's no longer playing.. sad

the NFL has a program for rookies, in which they are warned about spending their money, being offered shady deals in which to invest, and staying out of trouble. funny thing is, that you don't hear this about hockey players...go figure

Perhaps Europeans/Canadians are not into spending big as much as Americans.

Somebody I know did some work at the home of a highly paid football player whose name I will not mention. The house was still under construction, and there were a few of the player's friends who were sleeping on the floor. The guys would sleep through most of the day while people worked on the house. I imagine that many players who run into money troubles post-career do so because they are too generous with their friends.

Here's a interesting link to a story about athletes of all professions, going broke. I don't have time now but I'll return with my thoughts.

The NBA has an orientation program that deals with money issues too, but a lot of players begin to believe they are invincible, because they have the huge contracts just out of college plus endorsement deals to pad their bottom line, so they think this will happen forever, or at least the next 10 to 15 years, not realizing that most NBA careers don't last that long, and for the players who careers do list through that time, 90% of them end up taking a serious pay cut, mostly to play for a contending team.

The other huge issues besides hubris is players trying to take care of all their homeboys. It's one thing to buy a huge mansion for your parents and keeping them financially secure for life, but a lot of players end up like MC Hammer, financially taking care of their closest friends, who bring in some of their friends, and all of a sudden they have a huge entourage of people following them, most of whom they don't even know. Then once the money disappears, these people run for the hills. disbelief
