The ODOR of Immanent Death.

I remember about 7 or 8 years ago my sister and I visited my mom up in Birmingham and being that my sister still spoke to many of her former high school friends, she left one night to go hang out with one of them. Her friend's name was Kerry.

Anyways, Kerry at that time had become a registered nurse and was working at a local hospital, and being that 'death' has always fascinated my sister, they got on the subject of death.

Kerry explained to Jane, "There's this smell that somebody always has before they die. I can smell it sometimes weeks before they die, but whenever they smell that way, I know they'll die. They always die."

My sister asked her to explain the smell, and all Kerry could say was, "It smells nothing like decaying flesh. Nothing like piss or anything like that. It's hard to explain. It just smells bad, and I instantly know this means they'll die. When someone comes to the hospital and smells like that my first reaction is pity because no matter what we do, they'll die. And they always do."

Now, my sister is prone to believe MANY things. She believes that the queen of England could very possibly be a V-like amphibian or reptile creature who's wearing a human disquise to fool us. Moroever, she believes that the governments of the world are ruled by these alien creatures who are up to dubious deeds. I'm not even going to get into all the detail cause she actually believes this, and it's very disturbing to me.

However, I spoke to someone who used to work in a nursing home recently, and she describe that smell. I freaked out and said, "OMG, I've heard of that before. It's actually TRUE?". She said, "yes, very much so. It's a smell unlike any other and it always means the person is going to die in a few days. And they always do."

Has anyone heard of this?

There's a really good discussion about it here: http://www.soulcast.com/p...l-of-Death

I've never heard of it, but I do know that dogs will often try to bite and moles and such which are cancerous on their owners, signaling that they must smell a difference in the mole. Or dolphins are nicer to sick people or people--experiments have actually been conducted that prove this.

Yes, I've heard of it. Although, both my parents died at home under hospice care with me there, but they didn't have any "death smell".

There's a cat at some hospital that apparently knows when someone's going to die because it goes into the room and comforts them.

I have worked in hospice, and can tell you there is a smell of some sort..its not a death smell, so to speak...nothing decay-like....but its different on different folks. I don't know that it is just for those who are within days of dying, but certainly can be days or weeks...

I read something not long ago about it, and there is something with the way cells change and such...I can't remember..but like the body gives off pheromones, it gives off other scents that are biological.....

well, men and women send out sex pheromones to attract each other - the message says "I'm ready to mate", so this one, what's or who's it for?

now that you say this, i think i have smelled death before.

there was a guy who owned a shop and i would visit him on occasion. Just sit and chat.
Well the last time I saw him he was telling me he didnt feel well and was thinking of going to the hospital when he closed up. He smelled. Not like b.o. I thought maybe it was booze but it wasnt that either. But he reeked in a way I couldnt chalk it up to just b.o. or binge drinking. And it smelled not quite of piss or shit. Which was shocking to me cause he was a clean person, and only a few years older than me.

A week later I went back to talk to him about some endeavours and there was a wreath of flowers in front of the store. I went to one of the neighbors to find out what was going on. Come to find out he died the following day in the hospital after I spoke with him from pancreatitis.

There is this smell that I smell on really old people sometimes. It smells sort of like caramel, vinegar and whiskey combined. It's not body odor, old spice, or anything like that. Perhaps that is the smell. I don't like it. I find it unpleasant, but I also don't find it so offensive that it makes me want to gag or anything.
