We go to my wife's sister's place and though not post-modern, there is no clutter anywhere, which is cool, but then you realize there isn't anything there. It's like, what do you do? Are you like, into anything? Any interests or ???? Our place is the opposite extreme. Piles of shit everywhere. Books, papers, kid junk, pet hair. It sucks. And yet people like to be here. You just put stuff "away" when you're not using it. On a shelf, in a cupboard, instead of it lying aorund everywhere. This is especially key if you have kids or pets who like to ruin things. Honestly, I've lived both ways, with piles of stuff all over and with a place for everything and I'm much more relaxed in a clean, simple, somewhat organized environment. somewhat organised I can understand and appreciate completely

Why do you say that? Clutter=joy? I agree the homes that look like you'd be afraid to sit down in are a bit much, but many of these look quite functional and lived in. I think homes with lots of "stuff" can be beautiful too, but I appreciate the simplicity of these. My place is getting to be kinda that way. Same here. With the exception of my office/work room (which is always delightfully chaotic and RED), the majority of my living space is very clean and spartan with a minimalist mix of mid-century and post modern accents...and my place is a very joyous one with heaps of activities ranging from church to art to music endeavors...and my social gatherings are infamous, everyone loves to vibe here. It would be kind of silly (or ignorant, actually) to think that minimalism in interior design somehow equals lack of joy. In many cultures, actually minimalist interior design is a reflection of broader cultural arts and principles geared specifically toward harmony and joy, as well as energy flow. It's all simply a difference in personal taste, really.

For weeks the lamp had been creeping closer to the sofa, ready to engulf the man with its black lampshade of doom. He’d spent years cultivating a perfectly messy study. So to find that someone had stuffed a red volume on the umber-only bookshelves? Well, the proverbial shit hit the fan. They found it was the best way to greet the neighbors. Though their throats became raw from shouting “hello,” at least the conversations were brief.
