It's all about your internet service and connection. A good provider, good short-run ethernet cables, a quality network interface card, etc. The only software you really have to worry about is maybe loosening up your firewall, but the risk might not be worth it in the long run. If your NIC card is elderly, it might be time for an upgrade. They're cheap.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

thanks SG. I'm getting ready to upgrade the net service through roadrunner. I'm going to get a DOCSIS 3 modem and a new router instead of what they provide. Am I correct in assuming that I run a cat6 cable from the router to the PS3 to get a fast wired connection to it? I'm looking at gigabit routers btw.

Yep Cat6E. Cat6a would be overkill unless you're wiring your house for future compliance. Roadrunner has different tiers of throughput, so make sure to get quotes on the speeds that you'll need.

Are you having speed issues with the wireless on the PS3? I have yet to run a wire, cause I don't use it online enough, but its wireless connection is slower than a turd after a week of cheese consumption, no matter what router or ISP you use.

Phil told me to tell you this:

First of all you are a fuckwad!

Ok now that is out of the way what you really need to do is work out where the actual latency in the network is.
A 230ms ping return is a slow a your nan on a cold day so lets work our where the bottleneck is.
Do a tracert from the command prompt to a known web address for instance 67.19.128.163 although the server response there is historically slow wink (i got 2 timeouts just trying)
from there you will see where the holdup is, if you are connecting to a portal then try a tracert to there.

As far as cabling from your router to your device goes, if you have a 40mb service then even cat5e is ok as the eia/tia ratification for channel on that is 100mbps so the bottleneck will be out to the ISP not internally. Chances are that the router will only have 10/100 ports anyway.

Personally I would try a Draytek router. They are topnotch and really easy to get the best out of.

My guess is this will be latency on the out leg so shout at your ISP and tell them they are shit.
Try a speedtest site and see what is returned.

that's part of it. It certainly is usable, but I would really like to have as fast as a connection as possible. I'm going to keep the router and modem close to the tv and ps, run a cable to the ps from the gigabit router, hopefully that improves things.

I'm positive it's the ISP, and they're the only game in town. sigh

I was hoping there was something I could do to improve it on my end.

Your DL speed is decent, I would seriously look to the PS3 as the culprit. Do you notice your computers speed or is it only the PS3?

pc speed is ok, it's the ps online connection that is slow. I'm hoping the wired connection takes care of it.

Oh... that's exactly the problem. The non-hardwired PS3.

Yep. It's odd, the PS3 can handle online gaming with a fair performance wirelessly, but any type of download runs at about 14,400 speed.
