I was there. Were you?

The reports by the media have been greatly falsified. Unless there was some other, rabble rousing protest today that happened to occur on the exact same route, I don't know what the CBC thinks they're talking about.

The protest I was at numbered in the thousands and was made up of families, the elderly, church pastors, union members, peace groups like the Raging Grannies, hippies, college students, and off-duty police officers.

No, I wasn't "there" but common fucking sense says that it would be impossible to know exactly what everyone was doing, especially in the large group you claimed to have been in. You can't be everywhere and see everything at the same time.

But sure ok, you saw it ALL and the reports are all false.

We'll see if video of these events emerge...or maybe you'll just claim those were made in China too. lol

Common fucking sense says someone experienced in protest environments (15 years and going) pays attention to their surroundings. And even if I had been spending the time staring at my shoes, if there is any violence, word spreads.

Don't talk down to me, since you clearly don't have a fucking clue.

Sounds like inaguration in DC. lol

I think you'll find folk on both sides of the fence when it comes to events like this. The folk for it will match your list on the benefits of holding such events.

I don't get the Exoticizing and Tokenizing part though. I'm not being a smart ass, I just don't get it.

What's not to get? The so-called Four Host Nations have been given $25 million each in what amounts to hush money so they don't complain too loudly about the Games being held on their stolen, non-treaty territory. Thing is, a band member is only able to benefit from this money IF they live on reserve and only IF they have legal Indian status.

The mascots are ostensibly inspired by westcoast Native spirituality as a sign of respect, but they look like fucking Pokemon and all the merchandise is made in China.

Mockeries of traditional westcoast culture and religion are being paraded as proof of our inclusivity, meanwhile the majority of band members of the Host Nations are still living with the after effects of years of colonialism and abuse, and most of them live below poverty conditions.

I am not familiar with the history of your country or its indigenous peoples. That's what there's not to get. I have not read anything on these protests. I was not even aware of them until your posts. How am I supposed to just know where the costumes for your ceremonies were made?

What difference will it make protesting TODAY besides getting media coverage and getting that coverage will do what? Everyone knows there is poverty ,it is with us in this country and every other country in the world, every day.. so what will change tomorrow or next week, or month from this protest? I'll answer my own question. Nothing! So whats the point besides disruption.

Alot of canadians have waited for this day for many many years...whats wrong with being proud of our athletes?

Im canadian! & Proud of it!

It's not a secret. That's part of what's so infuriating to a lot of people, that those in charge of this event aren't even trying to pretend doing the right thing matters to them by keeping their questionable dealings quiet. They just don't care. sigh

Nearly all of the land in BC was not acquired by the federal or provincial governments by treaty, but by force. Treaties, though often broken since they were set, at least were legal. The majority of the land in this province, including what's now the city of Vancouver and the Olympic Games sites, were outright stolen from indigenous peoples. Since Canada is a much younger country than the U.S, this isn't even the "ancient history" of several hundred years ago. BC only entered Confederation in 1871, making the hostile takeover an event that occurred only a few years before that. There are Native elders alive today who are only the grandchildren of some of the murder victims of the late 1800's.

As I said, experienced or not, it's physically impossible to be able to see everything at once within in a large group. Impossible.

If you think you can, you are the one without the clue.

I am proud of our athletes.

But I feel sorry for them, for having to take part in an event that's about sports as much as a Britney Spears concert is about artistic integrity.

I am proud of our athletes.

But I am ashamed of country right now. I am ashamed of the actions of the local, provincial, and federal governments. I am ashamed of the actions of VANOC and the IOC. And I am ashamed of my fellow citizens, like you, who are so short-sighted and self-absorbed that you think it's okay to dismiss poverty and suffering and exploitation all so you can get drunk when our hockey team wins the Gold.

You weren't there. You clearly don't understand how this works. If there is violence in an environment like this -even small, isolated incidents -word spreads. When the goal is a peaceful protest, people who are there just to start shit and be violent are found out and made to leave. We often recruit on duty police officers if necessary to help us make the shit disturbers leave. It did not happen.

Sounds not unlike the history of indigenous peoples of so many country and that's a real shame.
Olympic dealings might not be a secret, but as a person who only tunes in once every 4 years to see some folk ice skate in glittery costumes (for which I give extra points or deduct at home) and nothing else...I'm clueless about them.

I've taken part in several demonstrations in my lifetime. I live in fucking Ottawa - you know, the nation's capital, we see protests here all the time. lol

I know exactly how it works, my dear. I've seen it many, many times when I worked in the downtown area...just blocks from Parliament Hill.

I just didn't realize that all activities in said demonstration were reported directly to you.

Again, we'll see if any video of these claimed altercations come to light.

Oddly enough, I can't see that being a highly likely event.

Will these videos also only show a small number of violent peace-disturbers?

Why aren't the real numbers being reported? Why are those who were there being painted as violent?

falloff Oh, fuck.

As if being pro-Olympics would help them, either. You sound like the guy who thinks his football team will win if he wears their jersey to a game and exclaims, "We won!" when they do.

The athletes and their trainers and support teams will help the athletes. Not you, and not me.
