I haven't really dipped into a lot of "new" stuff lately but there's one thing that I could point out and that is A. Platonov. His work is brilliant. A bit hard to crack and sometimes it makes you quite dizzy, but it's worth it. "The Foundation Pit" is my favorit work of his. I only found out about him a few months ago through reading a thesis on Gorki and his involvement with Stalin and the writers guild in Russia at that time. Platonov being one of the names I picked from the work, but there are dozens more to be (re)discovered. Another really nice book is "Grimus" a rather early and very unknown novel by Salman Rushdie. It's a parabel. I've also developed quite an unhealthy obsession with the work of Nabokov recently. I could recommend almost all of his books. But "Ada or Ardor" is one of the best. His work feels sort of like "Kafka" at times, yet without driving you absolutely insane [like Kafka's "The Castle"]. And, as always, I'm still infected by a sickening obsession for "MacBeth" by Willy S. The "in" crowd considers it to be his weakest drama, but I can only judge from my own reading pleasure and say it contains some of the most beautiful lines I have ever read. One of MacBeth's final speeches being the highlight: To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day To the last syllable of recorded time, And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life 's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.
