Apple Unveils iPad, Shares drop 2%

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_tec_apple

SAN FRANCISCO – Apple CEO Steve Jobs has unveiled the iPad, a tablet-style computer that resembles the iPhone, but larger.

"It's so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone," Jobs said Wednesday at the device's highly anticipated debut in San Francisco.

Jobs demonstrated how the iPad is used for surfing the Web with Apple's Safari browser. He typed an e-mail using an on-screen keyboard and flipped through photo albums by flicking his finger across the screen.

The CEO says the iPad will also be better for reading books, playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone.

No price or information on availability was immediately announced.

Now Apple will have to convince consumers, many of whom already have Internet-connected phones, computers and TVs, that that's the case. Tablet computers have existed for a decade, with little success.

Shares in Apple fell $4.65, or 2.3 percent, to $201.29 in afternoon trading Wednesday. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company's shares have more than doubled over the past year, partly on anticipation of the tablet computer.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

Your headline could be misleading about the shares:

"company's shares have more than doubled over the past year, partly on anticipation of the tablet computer."

It is misleading. Shares will always have that up/down moment when something new happens. They'll usually recover too. Steve Jobs looks a lot healthier too, so that alone sends stocks up a point.

Now we're getting into the real info and why I hate when Apple launches new stuff. Premium prices for gimped technology and they'll have a new model by this time next year with what they could easily put out now.

64GB for $829 and another 30 bucks a month to use it? At least give us some decent memory sizes for that kind of money.

Funny though, when the market heard how much they're charging, stocks went up.

SAN FRANCISCO – Apple Inc. will sell the newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499, a price tag far below the $1,000 that some analysts were expecting.

The iPad, which is larger in size but similar in design to Apple's popular iPhone, was billed by CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday as "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone."

The highly anticipated gadget has a 9.7-inch touch screen, is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size.

All models have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in. Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

Apple will also sell a version with pay-as-you-go data plans from AT&T in the U.S. Two tiers of data plan will be available without contracts: $14.99 per month for 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 for unlimited data usage.

Those 3G models will cost more — $629, $729 and $829, depending on the amount of memory. The Wi-Fi only version will be available worldwide in March, and the 3G version in April.
International cellular data details have not yet been announced.

Apple had kept its "latest creation" tightly under wraps until Wednesday's unveiling, though many analysts had correctly speculated that it would be a one-piece tablet computer with a big touch screen, larger than an iPhone but smaller than a laptop.

The CEO demonstrated how the iPad is used for surfing the Web with Apple's Safari browser. He typed an e-mail using an on-screen keyboard and flipped through photo albums by flicking his finger across the screen. And he showed off a new electronic book store, putting the iPad in competition with Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle and other e-book readers.

Jobs said the iPad will also be better for playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone. The iPad comes with software including a calendar, maps, a video player and iPod software for playing music. All seem to have been slightly redesigned to take advantage of the iPad's bigger screen.

Tablet computers have existed for a decade, with little success. Jobs acknowledged Apple will have to work to convince consumers who already have smart phones and laptops that they need this gadget.

"In order to really create a new category of devices, those devices are going to have to be far better at doing some key tasks," Jobs said. "We think we've got the goods. We think we've done it."

Applications designed for the iPhone can run on the iPad. Apple is also releasing updated tools for software developers to help them build iPhone and iPad programs.

"We think it's going to be a whole 'nother gold rush for developers as they build applications for the iPad," said Scott Forstall, an iPhone software executive.

A new newspaper reader program from The New York Times and a game from Electronic Arts Inc. were also demonstrated during the event. The audience, which included many journalists and bloggers, clapped and even gave Jobs a standing ovation.

Shares in Apple rose $3.06, or 1.5 percent, to $209 in afternoon trading Wednesday. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company's shares have more than doubled over the past year, partly on anticipation of the tablet computer. Shares in Amazon rose $2, or 1.7 percent, to $121.48.

Apple iPad Tablet: Specs, Features, Price Announced
January 27, 2010

http://blogs.zdnet.com/ga...s/?p=11721

The 0.5-inch thick device, which weighs 1.5 lbs., is intended to be used for web browsing, e-mail, photos, video, music, games and e-books — pretty much everything that its pint-sized cousin the iPod touch can do, only bigger.

We’ve always tried to be at the intersection of technology and liberal arts,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said. “It’s the combination of these two things that have let us make the iPad.”

In fact, it can run all iPhone and iPod touch apps out of the box, with no modification, using pixel-doubling technology.

It comes preinstalled with iTunes and the App Store and has a virtual keyboard for typing, as well as pop-over menus. It supports HD video and offers 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR support, as well as an accelerometer, compass, speaker, microphone and Apple standard 30-pin connector.

Inside, you’ll find a 1GHz Apple A4 chip — yes, in-house silicon — as well as flash memory ranging in capacity from 16GB to 64GB. Jobs claims its battery will last 10 hours with use and “more than a month” in standby mode.

The device is arsenic-free, BFR-free, mercury-free, PVC-free and “highly recyclable,” Jobs said.

The device’s support for e-books comes in the way of “iBooks,” a new online bookstore. (If you’re counting, that’s three stories for Apple now: App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore.)

The iPad can also support documents, spreadsheets and presentations with a new, modified version of the company’s iWork suite.

While all iPads will have Wi-Fi, mobile broadband 3G connectivity (via AT&T) depends on the version: A plan for up to 250 megabytes of data will cost $14.99 per month, and an unlimited data plan will cost $29.99 per month.

All iPad 3G models are unlocked devices and use GSM microSIM cards. International deals are expected to be announced sometime in June or July, Jobs said.

The iPad will start at $499 and scale to $829, depending on version:

16GB Wi-Fi only: $499
16GB Wi-Fi + 3G: $629
32GB Wi-Fi only: $599
32GB Wi-Fi + 3G: $729
64GB Wi-Fi only: $699
64GB Wi-Fi + 3G: $829
No date was set for availability.
Accessories are also available: a dock that functions like a picture frame, an external keyboard (effectively turning the iPad into a MacBook, sans Mac OS X) and a case.
Full specs:
1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip
9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology

They've sold 75 million iPhones/iPod touches, you don't htink there's a market for a faster, larger version of the iPod touch that has completely rewritten apps to take advantage of that extra space?

The continuum transfunctioner iPad is a very mysterious and powerful device and it's mystery is exceeded only by it's power.

But if you already have an iPhone/iTouch (or even a Droid, for that matter), why would you spend up to $800 more for this? To get a bigger (more easily broken) screen? It.Makes.No.Sense.
