How does the design, packaging, or whatever control for that big, vulnerable screen? It screams "crack/dash/scratch me, baby!!!" shake

I know! that alone makes me nervous, plus what is the cost of off the peripherals, case, connectors, bag etc... shake

For the first time the other day I saw one of those PCs that basically is just a bulky TFT screen with everything built into it. I can't think of anything worse than a touch screen. Must I clean my monitor every time I want to edit photographs to get rid of the fingerprints? Absurd.

This looks absurd too. It's huge! lol

You mean its the first mass market touch screen....except for the ones already out by major manufacturers who sell a lot more computers than apple?

The only people who view the apple release as the "first" at anything are those so wrapped up in the apple blanket they fail to see all the great products released in the mass market already.

How is the Mac Air doing by the way? Didn't Steve promise that was going to change the game too?

when I heard the name, I figured there would be jokes.

I'm a bit surprised about the reactions about the product itself.

In 30 months on the market, Apple has sold 75 million iPhone OS devices, with about an even split between the iPhone and the iPod touch. Projections have them selling about that many more in 2010.

At first glance the iPod looks like nothing more than a larger iPod touch. Multitouch, same underlying version of OS X, built in apps with the same names (plus the new books app).

The primary hardware differences is it has a much faster processor and the screen size went from 480x320 to 1024x768.

But to reduce it to just a faster iPod touch misses the significance of the iPad. The iPhone/iPod touch were the first mass market multitouch computers. They have been widely popular, but all share the same fundamental limitation of having apps be constrained by the small screen size.

That constraint is gone in the iPad. For the first time, there is a mass market multitouch computer that combines a multi-touch from the ground up OS with a screen size large enough to allow full blown apps. Some remarkable apps have been developed for the iPhone/iPod touch despite the screen size limitations. Those apps just scratch the surface of what's possible on a multi-touch OS.

Just look at the built in apps. Apple didn't just expand the display size of the existing iPhone apps, they created whole new versions across the board.

Safari has a new and improved UI, mail has a new and improved UI, Photos has a new and improved jaw dropping UI, etc, etc.

In addition, they have new, full featured versions of all 3 iWork apps. Not toy apps on a 3 inch screen. Apps every bit as powerful as the MacOS versions, but with a UI completely reworked for multitouch. You simply couldn't do these kinds of apps on the iPod touch. Which is why they didn't call the thing something like iPod touch XL. It really is a new class of machine.

Watch the keynote video. Watch the demos of the rewritten apps, watch the demos of iWork, watch the 3rd party demos (built in 2 weeks), especially brushes and the mlb.com apps. Here's the brushes video

Here's the mlb app

you don't think there will be hundreds of iPads at baseball games next season?

and here's iWork

http://www.youtube.com/wa...FbwwlIPQPk
http://www.youtube.com/wa...b0On0ixzc8

The full keynote is here
http://events.apple.com.e...index.html

This stuff is the future of computing. Apple already sells way more multitouch computers than they do Macintoshes. The iPad is only going to accelerate that.

And for some of the comments about limitations
- there is an adapter to connect to a camera via usb (to download photos and videos)
- there is an adapter that is an SD card reader
- there is a case that protects the screen and props up the iPad for viewing movies or using it like a netbook.
- if you don't like using AT&T for 3G, then use the built in wifi along with a verizon myfi to get your 3G from verizon.

I expect that the lines for the iPad release will be longer than they were for the iPhone releases.

I have a hard time believing the apps are just as powerful as the ones written for OS-X

I also don't know what the point of the device is. I understand that a larger screen is sexier, but hardly a reason to buy the device. Moreover, the largers size means, it can't just fit in to your pocket, so it presents problems with carrying it around (minor problems, I admit).

It remains to be seen who will take advantage of the device. I think if anybody can make a successful thinkpad, it's definitely Apple. I can't even remember the name of that little portable windows based device that Samsung(or was it HP?) tried to release a few years ago--that fucker had a 3 hour battery life. lol !

But yeah---the make or break success of this product will rest on two things:

1) Will the users view it as a big gadget or a small computer? (you mention the iphones being computers.. Sure they have an OS but that OS isn't truly OS-X. It's some kind of portable subset. So at best, consumers view them as multi-touch 'devices' and not actual computers in the desktop computing sense. My take is that it's being marketed as a big gadget and not a small computer--certainly the keynote appears that way. And I would agree with that.

2) What niche will it fill? I take is that the 10 hour battery life, 30 day downtime battery life, and continuous hours of video life alone will boost some people's interest in it. The calendar and organizer features are great as well. If I was a college student I would use it constantly, especially during lectures. Taking notes with this thing appears like it would be easy, and you wouldn't have to worry about the device going dead on you so quickly. I'm perplexed it doesn't have a camera or video cam on it. That would have sealed the deal. And Apple already knows how to manufacture these things obviously. I'm guess perhaps it was due to the additional cost that would go into the product, and Apple KNOWS it needs a device below the 600-800 dollar mark (which it actually pulled off).

Again, I like the device. I think it's nifty. But I'm not sure what I'd use it for or why I would even need it, really.

I didn't say the first mass market touch screen, I said the first mass market multi-touch screen. There is a signifiant difference.

Eugh that thing is awful. Why would anyone waste such a large amount of money on what is essentially a huge I-phone? Why would anyone want to lug that thing around? Seems silly. Just goes to show you could stick the apple logo on a glittery brick & people would buy it!

I'm getting a 3G one as soon as it becomes available. For sales people or small business this thing may be a dream come true. No more carrying around catalogs, laptops, forms or having to view a maps or a navigation app on a tiny screen. Everything in my briefcase can be replaced by this little electronic pad.
I think its awesome.
USB and flash would be nice, and I'm sure a better device than this is just around the corner for me but for me right now this is what i need.

I'll probably get one because $639 for the 3g version is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be and. Also I can run my iphone apps on it and the fact that you're not locked into a contract with AT&T is a big plus BUT.....

- no flash
- no camera eek
-can't run OS X apps like garage band (at least not yet)
- no USB port
Hmmm, may have to think about it confused
Well at least it's not another Macbook Air

They will keep on coming out with newer versions...they will add the camera, then the usb ports..that's how they take our damn money, better to wait.

All kidding aside, I think I am going to get one of these for my mom. I think it's the perfect combination of ease and features that she'd need . . . Internet, email, pictures, music, and eBooks. No OS to worry about, per se.
