Great job! woot!

You’re off to a good start.

I need to get back in loss mode. I have maintained the 50 pounds I lost last year through the holidays, but I want to lose 20-35 more. I’m gonna start running again today. I’m not sure how well I’ll like treadmill running (I can’t run outside in the Minnesota winter) but it’s long past time for me to get back at it.

Carrie: How did you begin your running program? Did you just start doing it, or did you follow a specific regimen? I've been trying to start running, and I just cannot get into it at all.

I did a learn-to-run program. If you google "couch to 5k" you will find beginner training schedules. There are various versions out there, but all of them will start you off with some intervals of walking and running that gradually increases your run time. (Good rule of them is you don't increase your run time or distance by more than 10% each week.)

The program I did initially was walking for 2 minutes, then running for 1 minute for a total of 20 minutes, 3 times the first week. Next week run 1, walk 1 (for a total of 20, 3 times). Next week run 2, walk 1, then run 3, walk 1 and so on until you're able to run 10-1's.

There are programs that are a bit more agressive if you're in better shape to start, but you get the idea.

In fact, I'm starting one of those myself again as it's been 3 months since I've run and I know I'll be out of shape again. I'm hoping to pick it up faster this time, though. smile

Thanks! I've been trying to do a run/walk mixture to start out with, but I'm just dragging. Maybe a real program will give me the structure I need to get further with it.

Yeah, I find the structure really helps me. I think it's easier to see and feel your progress that way and I find that really motivating. I can remember the first time trying to run 3 minutes in a row feeling like I was gonna die. And by the time I was up to 7 minutes I was able to look back and remember that and know I was gonna get through that.
Before I knew it 5k was my "easy" run. smile

Congratulations. That is amazing!

I've been using my bad knee as an excuse. I can do other exercises, I just can't run.

I want to eventually lose 50 pounds.

cool cool

i've read that doing short 30 seconds sprints 6 times 3 times a week
is just as effective for losing weight as jogging or cycling for 45 minutes 3 times a week

could this really be true ?

Oh I forgot! CONGRATS! great job! It may be a struggle. Some weeks will be better than others. But keep at it. It is also a life style for healthy living as well as anything. And Know YOU CAN DO IT!

there is a free web site that has a calories tracker and a plan of sorts. I think you put in your data and what you want it to be and it tells you how much you can eat to reach the goal. My honey lost 5 pounds in one week.

I will post it or org note it to you if you like.

Thanks for all of the comments everyone!!! grouphug It is a little difficult, but once I think about how I want to fit comfortably into my clothes again, I get back on track. I also keep a picture of myself at the weight where I want to get back to (when I was in high school) in my room on my bedstand. This way I see everyday what type of goal I'm trying to reach and to keep me motivated. Hope I have more good news next week!!!

Congratulations!! That is awesome!!

This may sound a bit goofy but we got the Wii Fit for Xmas and we can't stop using it... it's a fun way to get some light exercise in, although the yoga & strength training is kickin' my butt right now...

I've definitely noticed that my balance control & posture has gotten far better though!

thumbs up!

Hey I got the Wii Fit too. When I first got it I was using it almost everyday, now it's collecting dust. lol. Well I do pull it out now and then especially for some boxing. I feel like that's the only time when I'm actually sweating. But you are right, Wii Fit is a great way for some light exercise on days when you can't get to the gym.

Hello, Dewrede.

I owe you.. here goes

what you are talking about is HIIT - that's 'High Intensity interval Training'.

Indeed, 20 minutes of HIIT is equivalent to around 40 minutes of jogging.

It is interval training in that you will sprint at around 80% of your maximum ability and then jog (this is the recouperation stage)

How I do it is to sprint from one end of a football feild to the other. Then at the end i perform 1 x burpee. Then jog back to the beginning.

As soon as you reach the start line again you sprint back.. then perform 2xburpees and jog back.. etc...

When you reach 10 burpees you are done.

That is an awesome workout. It will strip fat from you, its also sports specific in that it replicates the type of running behaviour found in most sport. long distance running is found in ..well... long distance running. Also it is better for your joints and because of the explosivity of the movements you will build muscle tissue (both fast and slow twitch muscle fibres)

Long distance running has its benefits - i will partake in in occasionally but mainly to keep me mentally fit (the road is great for clearing your head).

have a look into it.

3 sessions of hiit a week will increase your fitness levels very quickly.

You have to put the work in, though. On every sprint you need to be SPRINTING. Dont aim for 10 burpees straight away.. but make that your goal over so many weeks. see how far you get. Your mind will want to give up before your body does. As soon as you can recognise and control that you will make some great gains.

give it a go!

Yes I have the Wii Fit Plus. I really don't know the difference between the two since I've never had the acutal "Wii Fit" but mine has the yoga ones that you speak of, and it also has games. I use the stepper game most of all though, that one really gives you a sweat if you step for 30 minutes.

As far as other Fit games go, I heard that the Biggest Loser game is a good one for giving a sweaty workout and the Gold's Gym one which is one that I was looking at a couple of months ago, but decided not to get it (I just made up my mind to get my butt up off the couch and getting into the gym was going to be my best bet as far as losing weight goes). So for right now I just do the Wii Fit Plus when I get ready.

the plus is the better of the two, newer software... we're liking the super hula hoop, the boxing, the obstacle course and the biking as far as the "games" goes.

the best new feature of the plus is that you can put together your own routines to keep it interesting (up to 60mins!). I've found that if you do ONE set of each of the yoga poses AND the strength training by the end you will be hurtin' and sweatin'...

Aside from that, the EA fitness game looks like a real butt kicker if you want a new "game" for your Wii...

highfive
